Flavor Profiles

I have been wondering for awhile now how many different flavor profiles can be found in cigars. And I dont mean the strawberry rockets from the local gas station either. Let's see if we can get a list going of familiar tastes that can be found in cigars.

1.) Woody
2.) Earthy
3.) Cedary
4.) Floral
5.)

I think the wheel pretty well covers it.

Nice! Now, as a noob, I'd be interested in seeing cigars mapped to the wheel. For instance, I'm a fan of the sweet, caramel and creamy wedges. It would be cool to look at the wheel and be able to pick out a couple cigars that fall into those areas.

I'm sure something like this exists somewhere. Anybody know of a good tool that can be used to map flavor preferences to cigars?

I've always had trouble identifying flavors in a cigar. I printed this out to use the next time I try a new cigar. This is a great chart. :ss

Great Thread!

I found this and some other interesting tidbits here.

Quote:

Factors affecting taste perception

Many factors affect taste perception, including:
  • Aging
  • Color/vision impairments
  • Hormonal influences
  • Genetic variations; see Phenylthiocarbamide
  • Oral temperature
  • Drugs and chemicals
  • Natural Substances (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_fruit)
  • CNS Tumors (esp. Temporal lobe lesions) and other neurological causes
  • Plugged noses
  • Zinc deficiency

It is also important to consider that flavor is the overall, total sensation induced during mastication (e.g. taste, touch, pain and smell). Smell (olfactory stimulation) plays a major role in flavor perception.
Zinc eh? Gotta go take a multivitamin...

That tastes like Umami.
:)

I would think the mild-medium flavors are on the left side (yellow) and the med-full flavors are on the right side. (orange)
