Dog Wheelchairs?
Hey folks,
Does anyone have any personal experience with dog wheelchairs/carts? Out Jack Russell, Jazz, had a bad accident last week and ruptured a disc into his spinal cord and is now paralyzed from the hips down. Unfortunately surgery won't help so we are looking to give him as happy a life as possible! Thanks in advance! Jeff |
Re: Dog Wheelchairs?
Sorry to hear about that, Jeff. I can offer no help with the wheelchair angle, and my google fu is about as good as anyone elses, I suppose. Good luck with Jazz' rehabilitation and care, though.

Re: Dog Wheelchairs?
We have done some research already and think we will go with a cart by Walkin' Wheels. Just hoping that someone might be familiar with them. There is always a slight chance that he will regain neuro function in his hind quarters but it is slim. He was a runner by nature so we are trying our best to keep his spirits high until he is allowed to be in a chair.

Re: Dog Wheelchairs?
Sorry to hear about the accident. I had a teacher some years ago that had a wheeled box for her dog as it had the same problem. I think her husband built it but "Shorty" wheeled around with his chariot as if he was born that way. As I recall it was a simple box with an axle, wheels and a boot that had a strap to affix the contraption to Shorty's hind quarters. I am sure a pre-made item would exist.

Re: Dog Wheelchairs?
Jeff - sorry to hear that - he is a fun dog! There was a special (dont remember if it was Animal Planet or another network) that had assist devices for dogs...good luck and give him a treat for me!

Re: Dog Wheelchairs?
How about a small skateboard and a belt to hold him in place?

Re: Dog Wheelchairs?
So sorry to hear about the dog! Indeed, our Corgi had doggie MD, and we purchased a wheelchair for her. It took a while getting used to, but it gave her mobility. I say "Yes!"

Re: Dog Wheelchairs?
I'm sorry to hear about your dog! I understand wanting to give him a happy life and I hope you find something that works out. I might need one in the future as my dog has 5 compressed discs in his back.... (this is on top of two cancer surgeries :()

Thanks for all the input and well wishes! Our vet is not all that familiar with what is available but we have some good ideas about it after some research. We will keep you updated!!

Re: Dog Wheelchairs?
very sorry to hear about your dog. I've only seen these dog carts once or twice but the dogs didn't seem to mind them as a matter of fact they seemed quite happy with them.

Re: Dog Wheelchairs?
Sorry to hear this.
I have seen numerous dogs using one that is like a chariot where their rear half of their body rests on the cart and the front legs do all the wheeling around. Not sure where to get them but they are very effective and the dogs I have seen looked happy and normal, which obviously is your main goal. Good luck. |
Re: Dog Wheelchairs?
So sorry to hear of Jazz's troubles, but very glad he has an owner as caring as you. Best wishes to him and you!
