Your first cigar
Let’s hear some stores of the first time you smoked a cigar.
One of my best friends started smoking cigars. It was a Friday night and we were all hanging out throwing the football around. My buddy says "I just got a box of cigars, want to smoke one." I think of how good the cigars stores always smell when I walk by. So I was curious as to how they taste and what they were all about so I figured why not. So he pulls out a brand new box of CAO gold churchills. He shows me the way of cutting, lighting, ect. After that first full draw I was hooked. Have been smoking since and have started to hit the slope hard. :ss |
Re: Your first cigar
My love/addiction began in February 2006. I was at work and my ex did something to severly piss me off and it resulted in me slamming my cell phone down on the coffee table. On the bounce it hit the ceiling it multiple pieces. My partner on the Ambulance advised me I needed to find a stress reliever and fast. We then went down to Smokin' Sam's on Caroline Street in Saratoga Springs and he bought me my first cigar which was a Fonseca. I have been addicted ever since.

Re: Your first cigar
If I remember, it was a Cuesta Rey, something in the 6" x 44 catagory. I was sitting in the backyard smoking it while reviewing an investigation file. I really started enjoying the smoke, so much, that it was placing me in the zone. It was early afternoon, and the cigar, soda, and that great afternoon seemed to make so much more sense than working on that file. Needless to say, I closed my file and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon (and the Cuesta Rey):ss

Re: Your first cigar
My first Cigar was on the golf course about 10 years ago. I was golfing with a good friend and his uncle. Uncle D brought some AVO Maduros (I think they were AVO Maduros:confused:)and we all smoked one as we played the round.
I smoked a cigar here and there for the next few years, and then about three years ago I stoped by the local shop and picked up a Padron 2000 maduro and I have never looked back. I started out slow, and then I found the old board and went head first down the slope. I think this is the best hobby I have ever started. I have met so many good friends and had more great times with a diverse crowd than I ever thought was possible. When I told my wife I was going to a herf she almost fainted, because I am the last person who wants to gather with crowds, but there is just something about cigars that draws people together. |
Re: Your first cigar
my first cigar was probably a black and mild or a backwoods or something along those lines. my first premium cigar was a cumbres de puriscal
my grandpa had purchased it as a gift for a friend. but the friend passed before he got it to him. so he gave it to me. So gramps, this is all your fault |
Re: Your first cigar
March 1967. Hard to remember the brand but a machine made packed in a sundries box and dumped out of a chopper on re-supply while on an extened vacation with the 101st in Vietnam.

Re: Your first cigar
Friend was graduating and bought a few Gisperts for us to try. First time for both of us, it was awesome. That's all I got.

Re: Your first cigar
It was on my 19th bday and my friends 18th bday. I told him we should smoke a cigar and we drove to the nearest smoke shop and told the old leathery woman that we wanted the biggest/fastest cigar she had. It was a decent size and we went back to his house and smoked some of it(smoked it extremely fast because we were going to meet up with some friends) and while we were driving to meet up with them I tossed it because it tasted like ****.
But when I tried it again(one year later) I was hooked. |
Re: Your first cigar
I was 16 and had a big fight with my mom so I "Moved out." I checked myself into a motel and was bored that night so I picked up a pack of White Owls. Smoked one and got so sick (of course I inhaled). Fast forward a couple of dozen years, picked up the habit again but this time with better result. :ss

Re: Your first cigar
It was 1997 and I had a Royal Jamaican (HUGE sitck / old blend) at my friend's graduation party... I was hooked! As well I had a few Macanudo Portofino's... :ss

Re: Your first cigar
Onyx Reserve. Its what got me started.
|
Re: Your first cigar
A friend and I used to steal swisher sweets from his dad's truck when he was passed out drunk. We'd smoke them behind the old K-Mart. When I was 18 I walked into a Cigar shop and the owner treated me right. He didn't talk down to me, and actually talked me out of some buying mistakes. That was about 14 years ago and I've been hooked ever since.

Re: Your first cigar
I had some crappy arturo fuentes and CAOs, I was about to drop cigars all together until that Hoyo de Monterrey Excalibur maduro taught me what cigars are all about.
|
Re: Your first cigar
Probably something crappy like a Swisher Sweet or Dutch Masters. The first decent cigar I had was an Onyx Reserve.

Re: Your first cigar
I bought a handful of good cigars with all the gifted cash I received from family after high school graduation. I don't recall the specific cigars but they were all pretty expensive name brands (this was 1997 though)
That summer I didn't have a care in the world. no job, no girlfriend, and plenty of money to just f*ck off basically. I remember several nights sitting on the backyard patio, alone with my thoughts, having a few beers and a cigar thinking, it can't get better than this. good times :ss |
Re: Your first cigar
It was a loooong time ago, when I was about 15. I was out one night with some friends and somebody passed some cigars around. I have no idea what it was, but it probably came from a gas station. It made me sick, wishing I could puke but couldn't. It was a few decades before I got up the nerve to do that again. When I did, my first was either a RyJ 8-5-8 or a Punch Elite. That time it took, and down the slope I went.

Re: Your first cigar
Phillies Blunts in high school ... fast forward 5 years later and I was gifted a Baccarat while playing golf and I've been hooked ever since.

Re: Your first cigar
Before I really got into it, I smoked cigars VERY infrequently into my late 20's. Once in a great while someone would give me a cigar during golf or at a sporting event, usually cheap machine mades like Swisher Sweets or something like that.
The first cigars I remember buying and enjoying were TeAmos. I friend gifted me a couple and I liked them. I bought a box of 10 TeAmo Relaxations. I kept em' in a tupperdore with a cello sponge. I couple months later I bought a cabinet of 50 Punch Rothschilds, a small humi and my fall down the slippery slope had begun. I haven't had TeAmo in years and I probably wouldn't buy one. My taste has gravitated to stronger smokes, but I still have fond memories of smokin' those bad boys on the golf course! |
Re: Your first cigar
All this talk about Swisher Sweets, I thought the thread was only for real cigars.
|
Re: Your first cigar
My first cigar was at a big party after my high school graduation...some buddy of mine had one and when he got to drunk to finish it I took it off of his hands
the rest is history |
Re: Your first cigar
MY first cigar was a AF 858 Maduro
|
Re: Your first cigar
Long time ago....I'm sure I started off with a drug store cigar but the first name brand serious stick I remember was the Macanudos. Next were the Henry Clays, then Excaliburs. No humidor at that point....just picked up the singles at liquor stores and cigar shops and smoke 'em right away. I got more serious when I built my first Tupperdore! I remember feeling a bit awkward going into a drug store pharmacy and asking for propylene glycol ('why do you want THAT!?!?!'). The first box I stored in the Tupperdore was AF Corona Imperial maddies......gosh I loved those things! After I was done with those I loaded it up with Sosa Wavells and then Santa Rosa naturals. Then I became a full blown stogie addict. :ss

Re: Your first cigar
Will read the rest of em later but I wanted to chime in.
AF Hemingway Sig. Quickly followed by a weird feeling of sliding down some kind of slope. |
Re: Your first cigar
A.F. 858 Maddie

Re: Your first cigar
Onyx churchill, man are those good cigars.
|
Re: Your first cigar
CAO Brazilia, on my 18th birthday. Probably the one gift my mom regrets getting me after seeing how involved I became with cigars!
|
Re: Your first cigar
Well for me, I had been smoking cigars for about 6 years but never seriously. So I didn't own a humidor, cutter, or any cigars other than the ones I would buy going to the cigar stores to smoke the day I bought them. I probably only smoked about 5-6 per year at events like BBQs and such.
Well I met a guy (named Ray...) that my gf worked with and had a bunch of classes with. We all started hanging out more and eventually as we all became friends we started to play poker as a weekly event. Well one of the poker events the topic got to cigars... and I expressed some interest in cigars, so Ray (Spect) asked me if I wanted to go down to the cigar shop and have a cigar. I said sure... not even sure what cigar it was other than a Fuente of some kind. But I enjoyed the cigar so much, that he felt inclined to push me off the cliff and down the slope... Now here I am almost 2 years after that, I have about 3-4 cigars a week average and my Cabinet is almost full and the overflow is working its way into one of two Vinos... :D I know it wasn't my first cigar... but it is the one I consider to be my first since it was the one responsible for my quick fall off the cliff! |
Re: Your first cigar
I recall smoking a Garcia y Vega back in high school. It tasted bad enough that I wouldn’t go near a cigar for several years. I also remember smoking an MC2 back in the mid-90’s and I was hooked.
|
Re: Your first cigar
My first was a Monte #4 in the summer of '05.
I was in Dublin on the first holiday with my wife. I was looking for a whiskey-flask and saw some in a window (app. of a cigar store, don't remember the name) and ended up with a flask/cigartube in one and aforementiond cigar. Smoked it in the evening while sitting by the Liffey. :ss |
Re: Your first cigar
The cigar that got me started was a Partagas Humitube.
|
Re: Your first cigar
My first was a Thompson's name brand!!! It was after the birth of a friend's first child. He passed me a cigar and I have been hooked ever since (not on Thompsons) on cigars!!!
|
Re: Your first cigar
The first cigar I remember smoking was a Dutch Masters. I was way too young to be smoking (7th or 8th grade). I don't remember much about it but I liked it.
My buddies bought me my first premium cigar on my 18th birthday. I think it was a Punch but I'm not sure. I do remember that it was like 9 inches long!!! We went to our local indian casino (which allowed 18yo at the time) and I remember the security guards wondering if they had to confiscate the cigar because it could be used as a weapon:r I smoked that thing for like 3 hours!! |
Re: Your first cigar
Padron 3000 was the first. been down hill ever since!
|
Re: Your first cigar
I can't remember any specifics but it had to be in high school swisher sweet:D
|
Re: Your first cigar
1st premium cigar was an NC Cohiba Robusto at Corona Cigar Company in Orlando in the company of SmokeyJoe.
slippery, slippery :ss |
Re: Your first cigar
I believe my first cigar was at my cousins wedding in England, but can't be 100% positive. When I was around 18/19, we used to hit the clubs in Windsor a lot. I'd grab a couple cubans to smoke at home. Also I used to buy the tins, like Punch Bolos infrequently, especially when up north fishing.

Re: Your first cigar
My first cigar was when I was visiting my sister and her ex when my first nephew was born in 1996. It was either a CC Punch Punch or a CC Monte #4, and we smoked them on the beach (Torry Pines) watching the sunset. Then, my next trip to Cuba, I bought 2 boxes of each. My first nc's I tried were AF, Avo, LGC's and Onex Reserves. Now my humidors and cabinet have 70% of CC's and 30% of NC's.... In those days when I started smoking I smoked maybe 3 boxes a year, now I smoke 2-3 boxes a month:ss

Re: Your first cigar
First cigar was a Thompson's Fidalo Nero (?) that a friend had been pushing on me for years before I finally gave in. I didn't know what to expect, but much to my surprise I enjoyed it.
First CC was a Hoyo du somethingorother at the first herf I ever went to. (Thanks mmblz!) First box I ever bought was a dress box of Parti Shorts. |
Re: Your first cigar
About 5 years ago, my friend and I walked into a B&M and walked out with 2 Macanudo Portofinos. We thought they looked cool because they came in a tube. At the time I definitely enjoyed mine, but years later I tried another and I couldn't smoke it after half an inch.
