Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Fried in a frying pan......yuhhhhhhhhhmeeeee!! :D
Like chili on my dog's! |
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Boiled with beer and then toast the bun and throw some American cheese on it.
|
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
:tpd::tpd:
Either in cooked beer or grilled. |
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
in order
griddle grilled bRoiled- yeah, in the toaster oven steamed boiling takes alot of the flavor out... best dogs IMO are hebrew national... I prefer a beef frank to a pork mix... followed closely by Groten Wiggle, a brand that is made locally and the owner is one of my customers. mustard only... everything else is nonsense...unless youre in Chicago, then you eat it chicago style, on a poppyseed bun, with neon green relish, and all the rest occasionally when the mood strikes, melted american cheese |
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Man you GOTTA grill 'em! Get that nice crusty char on the outside with all the flavor then top it off with some chili and cheese. mmmmmmmm tasty!
The best hot dogs, by the way: Zweigles Hots. Hands down, no contest. |
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Grilled and topped with chili, ketchup, dill relish, and graded cheddar cheese.
|
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Either grilled outside or fried on the stove in a little olive oil. Well done in either case and served on a steamed roll with mustard and chipotle relish or some home made green tomato relish. Ideally the hot dog should be Old Neighborhood meat franks.:ss

Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Klements from Milwaukee IMO. Amazing. I love em grilled as well. I think the perfect hot dog would be steamed hot and then grilled just enough to put on a the grill marks and impart a little extra flavor. I top them a lot of ways. I really enjoy a full Chicago dog - the sweet relish, or a classic chili cheese dog, or my wifes favorite (which is a little weird) ketchup and mayo. When I'm not messing around with all of the condiments for a Chicago or Chili dog I lean toward yellow mustard, a little ketchup, & diced onions.

Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Definitely grilled or fried – either way well done. Topped with Dijon or spicy mustard, fried onions, maybe some relish and some type of hot peppers (Il Primo Giardiniera works well) or a combination thereof. :D

Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Personally, hot dogs are best cooked over an open flame (i.e. on a stick over a fire). I then like to top them with Dennison’s meat chili, grated cheddar cheese and onions.
I’m pretty sure Pink’s in LA steams their dogs and buns, they make the best hot dogs. Bar none. |

Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
No way to eat a dog except grilled. And I can't believe TripleF didn't mention Zweigle's.
Grill them till they pop open, quick slice and insert your cheese and back on the grill until melted. Mustard, onion, and relish. Done. Edit: Boston Mark nailed the Zweigle's. |

This is what I always get: MULLHOLLAND DRIVE DOG - 10" STRETCH dog grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, nacho cheese & bacon. :dr |
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Grilled until they just start to burn, add mustard, onions and relish and you're done. Don't forget to toast the buns on the grill as well.

I am surprised that nobody mentioned wrapping a hot dog in bacon and cooking under the broiler.:ss

Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Grilled until they are half to three quarters burnt on the outside.
Mustard, Relish, Onions |
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Cooking it at home:
Take a knife and make diagonal slits across the "top" (one side). Then do the same on the other diagonal, so you have a diamond pattern. Then cook in a frying pan with butter. As far as toppings, used to go to Spike's in Providence Rhode Island. Favorite were two variations of the Texas Ranger: Texas Bandit has cheddar, bbq sauce, jalapenos Morey Dog has extra bbq sauce, bacon, and extra cheddar Another thing I would do is order one of the above and a plain hotdog, then add the plain hotdog to the bug alongside the topped one. |
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
I like mine steamed. It reminds me of being at Fenway Park. Usually, I'll throw on chopped onions and relish. :dr
Sometimes though, I do enjoy a good chili-cheese dog. :dr |
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
I like mine over an open fire, wood fire.
Then topped with fried onion, jalapenos, and hot mustard. An Ice Cold Bass, or Cremore Springs Lager. Ok now I am hungry |
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Steamed preferably. If not, on the grill. Then... just ketchup & mustard. Otherwise you can't actually taste the dog.
|
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Anyone who puts ketchup or catsup on a hotdog should be banned from masticating for life...:pu
|
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Now I'm on a quest to find a decent hot dog for lunch.
|
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
The "Texas Tommy" is pretty popular around here. That would be a jumbo all beef dog topped with bacon and chedder.
There is also an excellent sandwich shop our neighborhood that does a variation on a chili-dog. It is a hot dog wrapped in pancetta, grilled and covered bolognese on a hard roll. Man I am getting hungry. |
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
I have always wanted to try the deep fried dogs, a la Rutts Hut in NJ after seeing a couple pieces on them. Grilled usually for me, chili, cheese, raw onions, fried onions, almost anything goes as far as toppings for me. Most importantly..... you have to start with good protien, or the rest is just lip service.

Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
"Nobody.....I mean NOBODY puts ketchup on a hotdog....Harry Callahan"
Having quoted that, I like them 2 ways---mustard, ketchup, and slaw (the good homemade stuff, not that Ruth's crap)---and--mustard, chili, onions, and slaw. I'll do relish if there's no slaw. Kinda like a Carolina Burger, but its a Carolina Dog Too much of any ingredient overpowers the dog for me. Two favorites--Carolina Packers red dogs (ya gotta be raised on it) and Nathans And always grilled to 1/2 burnt--steamed bun---cold beer:al :2 |

Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
There's a place here that sells "belly buster" dogs, at least 1/4 lb each. Grill those bad boys until they start to split, be sure the skin is charred. Hook these up on some soft toasted hogie style rolls. Top the dog with mustard, little relish, raw onions, sauerkraut, chili, and finally top it with cheese. Yea, baby!!!

Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Up here in New England there is a company that makes what is called a Pearl Country Club Frank. It is an all beef frank, kosher and has that wonderful snap that is hard to find anymore. Once a year Eddie Andelman, one of the local sports mavens does a promotion to raise funds for cystic fybrosis and calls it the Hot Dog Safari. For about a month before the Safari Pearl makes a quarter pound (might have the sound too small) frank that is sold by one of the local chains with all of the profits going to the Joey Fund (CF). This event has turned into a tremendous fund raiser and has gotten so big that it is now held at Suffolk Downs which is a local horse track.

Great dogs there. There’s usually a long line, but you’ll be ready to devour what you order after being tortured by the delicious aromas while waiting. They're also open late to boot! |
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
My three votes:
Skyline Cheese Coney - Plain (no mustard, no onions) - On the griddle The Corner Bar Chili Dogs - Just chili and cheese - On the griddle Pronto Pup - Pup with ketchup - Covered in batter and deep fried I guess I like them on the flat top and deep fried. Yummy in the tummy :tu |
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
I like mine cooked on the grill partially burned. I then put it on a hot dog bun with a ton of ketchup.
|
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
the key to a good hotdog is the hotdog, if you have a good hotdog you could microwave it and it would still taste awesome. i like chicage style even though ive only had it once. (in chicago of course)
|
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
steamed with sauerkraut.
Place kraut in a sauce pan, sprinkle with some celery seed, place a couple of dogs on top, and heat until dogs are heated through. Eat on soft dog rolls with mustard. |

Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
On the grill with guldens mustard and sauerkraut. Only way to me
Make that an all beef hotdog or thumans dog with the sauerkraut and guldens piles ontop....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm |
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
A quick way to get a "steamed" hot dog is to throw a dog in a bun, wrap it in a paper towel, and zap it in your microwave for 1 minute (maybe a little less depends on the power of your microwave).

Steamed with Guldens spicy mustard, onions, relish, and Tabasco If no bun available zap in the microwave and fold in a slice of bread
|
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Grilled or broiled. Spicy mustard and kraut. Keep it simple.
|
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
Blackened on the grill.
|
Re: best way to cook a hot dog?
I like them cooked any way possible. Once the relish, onions and mustard are on it you can hardly tell the difference. I also like the chili cheese dogs if it is good chili.
