Lancero love
I've always liked lanceros, and it recently dawned on me that I rarely buy/smoke them. So I've been buying and smoking quite a few lanceros. So I'm gonna smoke a few lanceros today, and post short reviews in this thread.
First up is Crafted by Casa Fernandez (7.5" x 40). I had never heard of this line, but added a bundle of 10 to an order from Serious Cigars a while back. No exaggeration, these are probably the best cigar I've smoked so far this year, including CCs. Bold but smooth, good draw/burn, lots of subtle flavor changes, no harshness or ammonia flavor even at the nub. Halfway through my second one, I ordered 4 more bundles. |
Re: Lancero love
Lover lanceros. I'm looking forward to reading your reviews throughout the day.

Re: Lancero love
La Palina Classic (7" x 38)
Nice looking cigar, medium brown wrapper, good construction and draw. Fairly typical medium bodied Habano wrap flavors. Not a bad smoke but nothing mind-blowing. I won't buy any more. |

Re: Lancero love
Wrong forum but right cigar size $ .20.... Do you think they burn longer than they should? John and I drove up to the shack to water the plants before picking up Tom at the airport. Smoked a couple 2001 Cohiba Lanceros which felt like tent pegs but smoked like a dream. Didn't smoke particularly slow or fast. Hour to the shack, hour and twenty to the airport. Finished the cigars as we pulled into the airport. 2:20 Lanceros? WTF

Alec Bradley Coyol Petite Lancero (6.5" x 41)
The size is more of a lonsdale, but oh well. Nice looking, well-rolled cigar. Perfect draw. Woodsy in the nose with bit of "baking spice" on the finish. Mild side of medium "strength". A better cigar than the La Palina, but as was the case with the La Palina, nothing that makes me want to buy multiple boxes. |
Re: Lancero love
Rocky Patel Sungrown maduro lancero (7.5" x 38)
I stopped buying RP stuff a few years ago after too many bad experiences (poor construction, inconsistent blends). But I took a gamble that the smaller production lines might have fewer quality issues and grabbed a couple of singles. Nice looking wrapper with a distinct floral scent. Heavy in the hand, draw is a little tight but not too bad. The floral flavor stays present throughout most of the cigar, with a nice tangy flavor on the finish at first, then a cocoa flavor after the halfway point. Slow burn with only a couple of minor corrections. A nice smoke. Impressive, even. I may have to rethink my Rocky boycott and snag a box of these. |
Re: Lancero love
Cool thread, Mark. I'd say probably half the NCs I smoke are lanceros, just taste the best to me for many Nics and DRs.
|
Re: Lancero love
Lancero's need to be smoked on the slower side or they get way too hot and acrid tasting. Not an easy to feat for me to smoke anything slow !

Re: Lancero love
My Father #4 lancero (7.5" x 38)
Nice looking wrapper with a faint floral aroma similar to the RP Sun Grown. Heavy in the hand, good construction and perfect draw. Honestly, this one was a bit disappointing. I like most DPG cigars, but this one has an "off" flavor on the finish that I just don't care for. I thought it might be a fluke, so I unwrapped one from the cello and let it sit for a few weeks. Same thing. A weird, unpleasant flavor on the finish. |
Re: Lancero love
Had my first Lancero about two weeks ago. It was a Southern Draw Rose of Sharon Thorn I received from the Privada Cigar Club. I took my time smoking it and found it very flavorful with an awesome draw. Really enjoyed it and waiting to smoke a few more I have sitting in my box, An Olive Serie V and a Tatuaje Lancero. Just subscribed and looking forward to more reviews. Thanks Mark

Torano Virtuoso lancero (7.5" x 38)
I used to smoke Toranos fairly often back in the day. Then, over the years they sort of became a CI/Cbid bargain brand and I lost interest. I haven't missed anything. Poorly constructed, lumpy, rolled so tight that the PerfecDraw won't even help. I pulled another one out of the 5-pack and it was the draw was a little better, but even worse construction. Tried to smoke it and gave up. Checked the remaining 3 and tossed them. Junk. |

Re: Lancero love
Smoking another Crafted By Casa Fernandez lancero now. These cigars are really great. I've already blown through my cigar budget for the month, but Serious has these for $44 for a bundle of 10 through Jan 31. There are 4 sizes, but I have only tried the lanceros. Try 'em.

Thanks for your reviews.
I just placed an order with the Serious folks. Cigarpage had some Nicaraguan Overrun lanceros (maduro and habano) that were excellent--unfortunately they sold out quickly. Perhaps a prayer to the cigar gods will bring us some more... Quote:

7-20-4 Maduro Lancero (7.5" x 38)
Nice looking wrapper, nice roll, good draw. The cedar sleeve has transferred its scent to the wrapper. First few draws, there's a bread-like flavor I've never tasted in a cigar before. Overall, fairly typical maduro flavors. Unsweetened cocoa on the draw, coconut and a bit of anise on the finish. Fuller side of medium "strength". Slow burn. Nice smoke. |
Re: Lancero love
Casa Fernandez Aniversario 2015 lancero (7.25" x 40)
Really beautiful cigar. Flawless wrapper. Easy cut and perfect draw. More 'kick' than the toro sized Aniversario 2014. Really great flavors that linger on the palate between draws. Large smoke volume for the size. A few minor burn corrections. A really fantastic cigar and definite box purchase...at auction prices, of course. :ss |
Re: Lancero love
I really enjoy the Oliva V lancero. Have a few left with about 4 years on them.

Tatuaje Miami Especiales (7.5" x 38)
Nice looking cigar, well-rolled, good draw. Nice smoke at first, but about halfway this thing starts tasting nasty as hell. Strong chemical/ammonia aftertaste. I gotta be honest, with all the bad experiences I've been having lately, I am pretty much done with Pepin-made cigars. Kinda sucks, but he isn't the first cigar maker I've kicked to the curb after too many bad sticks. |

Check out Stogies Wold Class Cigars out of Houston. They have their H-Town exclusives.

Re: Lancero love
Cigar Bundles of Miami Tampa Blend lancero (7.5" x 38)
I was granted a really special request and had 2 bundles fresh off the table sent to me. Excellent! :ss Really great looking wrappers. Tobacco and floral scent to the wrapper. Nice little pigtail cap that cuts easily. Perfect draw. NICE smoke. Spice up front, leathery finish at first, then the floral I smelled on the wrapper makes an appearance in the second half. Large smoke volume. At $4/stick for a fantastic USA made cigar, these really can't be beat. |
Re: Lancero love
Nicaraguan Overruns maduro lancero (Serious Cigars)
Snagged a bundle of these when they were on sale recently based on a recommendation from oldforge. These 7 x 38 lanceros are a nice deep brown. The wrapper has the most amazing smell. You know the smell of a big, walk-in humidor at a cigar shop? THAT smell. That exact smell! Well-rolled, surprisingly heavy in the hand for a skinny cigar. Perfect draw. Pretty typical maduro flavors in the first half. Cocoa, coconut, a little coffee. Good burn, large smoke volume. Solid 2" ash. Full side of medium "strength". Similar flavors in the second half, but with a nice sweetness on the draw. A very nice smoke. One of the best lanceros I've smoked since starting this thread. And at just over $2 a stick, these are a huge winner. Thanks, oldforge! :ss |
Re: Lancero love
Casa Fernandez Miami lancero (7.5" x 40)
I make no secret of my love for this company. This was one of the cigars that made me realize my love for lanceros. Grabbed a box recently. Spicy, full-bodied but smooth, well constructed. Deep flavors, a flavor that I have just come to call 'Nicaraguan spice'. Y'all know what I'm talking about. I am enjoying this lancero with a nice glass of petite syrah wine. Huge thumbs up for the Casa Fernandez Miami lancero. |
Re: Lancero love
Thanks for all the reviews, Mark, gives me ideas when I meet someone at the B&M for a smoke. :tu

Diesel Unlimited lancero (7"x38)
There have been a metric sh*t ton of 5-packs of these on C-Bid lately. Not sure if they are just excess stock they are trying to get rid of or what. Nice looking wrapper. A little light in the hand, but the draw is good. Not a bad smoke. Strong spice in the nostrils but not much depth to the flavor. |

Re: Lancero love
Thanks for the reviews. Historically I've always loved smaller RGs so lanceros, PCs ect have always been my thing. Lately I'm digging the larger RGs though for some reason. I still love a good Lancero though!

Re: Lancero love
Kristoff Corojo Limitada lancero (7.5" X 40)
This is, I believe, the first Kristoff cigar I've ever smoked. All the Kristoffs I've seen on auction sites and at B&Ms have been way too fat for my liking, so I was surprised to find these lanceros at a B&M recently. Nice looking, deep brown wrapper with a nice sheen. Pigtail cap and shaggy foot (I think those look cool). Wrapper has a very distinct floral aroma. Heavy in the hand and a good draw. First few draws are earthy, with that floral aroma coming through on the finish. About half an inch in, it starts settling into a fairly typical medium to full-bodied corojo wrap cigar. Spicy, a bit of bite in the nostrils. A few inches in, the floral flavor makes a return. Large smoke volume. Nice smoke so far. Slow and even burn with only one correction a few minutes after lighting. I enjoyed this cigar quite a bit, but it wasn't a mind blower. For the price (about $8/stick by the box) there are other cigars that I like more. :ss |
Re: Lancero love
I love lanceros and lonsdales. They are one of my fave vitolas. I have a MF and Tatuaje lancero resting right now.

Re: Lancero love
Liga Privada Unico Serie L-40 (7" x 40)
I don't buy Liga Privadas very often cuz they are usually out of my price range, even at auction prices. But I was on vacation and stopped at a tobacco shop that had a pretty impressive walk-in for a cigarette and vape joint. This is a GOOD smoke, man. Very well constructed (I have almost never had a DE cigar with construction problems). No major twists and turns in the flavor, but deep flavors of coffee and unsweetened cocoa. Nice aroma coming from the foot. These are a definite winner and probably a box buy when I get my annual bonus. :ss |

Interesting, i wasn't a big fan of the L-40's, but I love just about every other LP. I did smoke my way through the box, but I've yet to buy any more.

Love this thread and Love Lanceros!!!

Re: Lancero love
Just finished another CBOM (Cigar Bundles of Miami) Tampa Blend. Excellent smoke! Slow, even burn, medium-full "strength", nice flavor, nice aroma coming from the foot.

Re: Lancero love
Don Pepin Garcia Blue lancero (7.5" x 38).
I've had a quite a few bad experiences with DPG stuff in the past few years; so many in fact that he's about to go on my 'do not buy' list. Wow...another disappointing cigar from Pepin. Decent until about halfway, then a very noticeable ammonia/chemical flavor. I think I'm gonna have to put ol' DPG on the list. A sad day. |
Re: Lancero love
Oliva Serie V lancero (7" x 38)
Oliva as a company has fallen out of favor with me in the past few years. Too many bad experiences with poor construction/off flavors. But because they used to be one of my favorite cigar makers, I had to give the V lancero a shot. This cigar has been resting nekkid in the humi for about 6 months. Nice wrapper, draw a bit tight but tolerable. This cigar was really nice, with a flavor that is distinctly different from the other sizes in the line. I may have to snag some more of these. :ss |
