It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
Sgt. Pepper blew the world away.
You can love the Beatles, you can hate the Beatles, or you can be completely indifferent. Yet by any objective measure it cannot be denied that this is a viable candidate for the most influential album ever released. Maybe you should check it out some day. :D Ever the taciturn sage, Bob Dylan told Paul McCartney upon his first preview of the music, "Oh I get it, you don't want to be cute anymore." :r |
Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
I like the Beatles. I iike this album. I wish it was 20 years ago today, I'd be 30 years younger. :D

Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
I still prefer Abbey Road, but Sgt Pepper's is undeniably great.

Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
I'm in the "meh" category but, for those that get a chubby for the Beatles, there's a new SeriousXM channel dedicated just to them - channel 18.

Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
Never heard of it.

Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
There are 7 or 8 or so Beatles albums I like better.

It was very influential. Didn't care for Abbey Road or the White album much. I greatly preferred the lps leading up to Sgt. Pepper except Magical Mystery Tour which came after but I really liked better.

Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
Revolver and Rubber Soul are great albums, and MMT gave us "I Am The Walrus", which by itself is worth the price of admission. But the first two were arguably "only" the first steps towards Sgt. Pepper, while MMT would have been a strange outlier without it . . . much like Satanic Majesties Request was for the Stones.
And no need to be sorry. I lived through Beatlemania, but never caught the disease, so there's no offense taken. People like or dislike what they will. Yet one should give the boys their due, and thus I do. |
Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
I like Revolver better; Taxman, Eleanor Rigby and Tomorrow Never Knows are among their best ever.

Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
Great album and the cover art was amazing. Classic.

Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
For what it's worth (insert Buffalo Springfield link here), Rolling Stone names Revolver as the #3 greatest album of all time. Rubber Soul appears at #5, and The White Album comes in at #10.
Three guesses which is #1, and the first two do not count. :r |
Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
Trout Mask Replica?

Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
Just looked it up. It was way down to #60.

Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
Captain Beefheart does hold a higher rank than Sgt. Pepper. :r
|
Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
I have 4 or 5 copies of Sgt. Pepper on vinyl. I play it at least once a year.

Re: It Was Fifty Years Ago Today
And today is the golden anniversary of the live worldwide broadcast of "All You Need Is Love", which remains to this day the single most misunderstood song that The Beatles ever produced. It was and is hailed at the anthem of the Summer Of Love, yet everything from the meaningless platitudinous prattle of the lyrics ("There's nothing you can do that can't be done/There's nothing you can sing that can't be sung" . . . well, duh!) to the braying horselaugh of the brass (Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!) clearly declares the whole Flower Power generation was full of crap. Whether this is due to Lennon's brilliance or some unconscious insight shall forever remain buried with him.
Regardless, that broadcast was a landmark in musical history. |
