12 season locked already? No MVP or silver slugger awards given yet. Games are over, but the season hasn't officially wrapped yet till the awards are handed out imho.

Make it a Cremosa and he's yours!

All jokes aside though talks of him being possibly sought after by the Phillies as well now.

Andy, when the awards are handed out I can open 2012 back up for discussion. PM me if I forget.

Good news for the Mets:

"The Mets made a necessary administrative move on Oct. 30, exercising the 2013 contract options for third baseman David Wright and starting pitcher R.A. Dickey. In theory, Wright will make $16 million next season and Dickey will earn $5 million."

Now management needs to get to work on long-term contracts for both.

Tigers get another piece of the puzzle yesterday signing Torii Hunter. His success versus lefties is one thing the Tigers were missing in 2012. Torii and the return of Victor Martinez is something for this Tigers fan to get excited about.

That, and Miggy's MVP! :wnr

I'm a little leary about Hunter at this point in his career, but he put up good numbers this past year and his WAR was at 5.5. If I was a GM and had the money, I'd take that gamble.

Hunter leading off, need a two hole hitter, and Miggy and Prince. Looks like a dominant top of the order.

Or lead off Jackson, and bat Torii second.

1. Austin Jackson (.300 Avg and speed)
2. Torii Hunter
3. Miguel Cabrera
4. Prince Fielder
5. Victor Martinez
6. Andy Dirks
7. Jhonny Peralta
8. Alex Avila
9. Omar Infante

I likes da looks o dat. :)

Jackson's numbers work too. In my book, the number one and two hole hitters shouldn't be much different with the exception of speed. Let the speedster leadoff and the obp hitter bat next. Sounds like the Tigers will be a run producing machine next year barring any injuries. What's next year's pitching for Detroit look like, Admiral? I know Velander will be back, but that's only once every five days. What about the pen?

icehog3 11-15-2012 08:06 PM

Re: MLB 2013 Thread

The starting rotation will include Verlander, Fister and Scherzer, so I think it will be as strong as any starting 3 in baseball, Andy. The Tigers will pursue Sanchez, but that is not a given right now.

The bullpen and the infield defense will again be the Achille's Heel unless changes are made. Valverde is gone, and I am not sold on Phil Coke as a closer. Benoit scares the crap out of me too, he gives up far too many long balls to pitch set-up in close games. While the offense will set-off the defensive liabilities IMO, the bullpen will need to be addressed if the Tigers are to make the post-season and beyond again.

Torii Hunter will digress this coming year. .389 BABIP last season. Still, though, I would have like to have had him on my team.

Sounds like the rangers aren't going to be resigning Mike Adams because the Rangers don't sign multi-year deals to relief pitchers. Someone is going to get a stud.

Hunter will still be an upgrade over Boesch and Berry. :2

Maybe the Rangers would like Berry for Adams? :noon

At kind of a bargain rate, too, considering the money all the other top stars are getting.

Doesn't that contract match up to his age year 32 through 38? I always struggle with this. To me, paying a 38 year old ~$17MM is NOT a bargain usually. That being said, I understand locking up your franchise player.

Re: MLB 2013 Thread

Supposedly the health of Hanson's shoulder is in serious question. That's the reason for the low-sell out of Atlanta

And I think that's right about Wright's deal, but considering what guys like Pujols, Votto, Fielder and all those other guys have gotten in terms of "career" deals/extensions, Wright's looks modest by comparison.

Wright isn't the same caliber player as those you mentioned, thus his contract shouldn't be of the same caliber, either. :2

BJ Upton in, Hanson out? Sounds ok to me. I did favor the redhead while he was in Atlanta and only wish him the best with the Angels.

True. But he is the Mets' franchise, realistically. As a Phillies fan, if you told me I could have David Wright for that contract, I'd be very pleased.

Tigers took Anibal Sanchez out of the clutches of the Cubs. They overpaid for him, but with a starting 4 of Verlander, Scherzer, Fister and Sanchez, I'm a pretty content Detroit fan.

Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers have reached agreement on a new contract that could exceed $202 million, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney.

Verlander's deal, which would make him the highest-paid pitcher in the game, is for seven years and worth $180 million, sources said. A vesting option for an eighth year could push the deal to $202 million.

Opening day for the Twins today. I'm excited for the season even though we'll probably lose close to 90 games. Plenty of offense but no pitching for the third straight year. Going to have some softball scores this year. It'll at least give me plenty of goods for my Twins blog. Baseball is back, and all is right with the world again. :noon

There's something special about opening day.
Even if your team is "predicted" to finish dead last, the day is still filled with promise.
I'm real excited this year, as almost everyone is predicting the demise of the Yanks.
To quote the immortal Lou Brown - "I'd like to hang around and see if we can give 'em all a nice big $hit burger to eat."
Opening day, truly one of the best days of the year! :tu

Don't think we'll be hearing "Cubs Win, Cubs Win!!" a whole lot this year.
Oh well there's always next year. Crap I was suppose to wait till August to say that.
