DPG El Centurian
I was lucky enough to try a delicious El Centurian lancero this weekend as part of a lancero pass at the Cigarfest pre-herf (thanks to Theo Cincy).
I believe the lancero was only available in the discontinued lancero box: http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...VCxTjFGfEe7DoA Does anybody have any experience with the robusto sizes? I couldn't find any reviews on here, just wondering peoples opinions on these cigars. I am sure some of you more experienced smokers have had your hands on these gems, thoughts? http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...pxWJSd0fOh_ULP Review I found elsewhere |
Re: DPG El Centurian
I love them. I believe the entire line has been discontinued for years. They are usually pretty $$.
I believe them to be the most Cuban-esque NC out there. |

Re: DPG El Centurian
I believe 2007 was the last year, I can't wait to smoke the robusto I have but if it is as good as I hear, it will be bitter sweet since I can't get more. What do you do in a situation such as this? Special occasion cigar?

Re: DPG El Centurian

I may do the same. |
Re: DPG El Centurian
I read a few rumors that the Centurian is the same blend as the My Father Special S (the one with the large S, not the small S). Anybody know anything about this? from the information I can find it looks like the big S might be given out at Pepin events and the small s given out with box purchases from vendors?!? I purchased a bunch of stuff from Famous once and they gave me a 3 pack of the small s.

Re: DPG El Centurian
I bought a box of the robustos like a year ago. Great smoke. They have aged very well.

Re: DPG El Centurian
From what I know the Ss are not in distro and are for handouts from the reps. A great smoke. I had one 7 months ago-awesome.

Re: DPG El Centurian
I thank Theo (Theocincy) for turning me onto these. At the pre-herf at CI, he lit up a Lancero and passed it around. It was the closest tasting NC to a CC I have ever experienced. I was hooked. Stubbled upon them at a local B&M and bought em up.
Enjoyed another one just a few days ago... Really enjoyable smoke! |
Re: DPG El Centurian
IMHO, It tasted more like a Djarum than like a CC.
It certainly had a unique flavor profile, but not one that I found pleasant or even palatable. The flavors just were not something I look for in a cigar. |

I HATE cloves with a passion but could not pull that flavor out of it, goes to show how every person can taste something so different. |
Re: DPG El Centurian
These are great cigars. I remember reading an interview with DPG when these came out where he said he was trying to emulate the flavor profile of an aged Cohiba. Not sure he quite got it right, but this is a fine cigar.

Re: DPG El Centurian
Was fortunate enough to find and order a box of the Emperadores (Belicoso) on-line from Holts about two years ago. (They were in their "Clearance" section, if you can believe that. Can't think of a more expensive stick from Pepin so that probably was the reason they were still around.) Anyway, I really enjoyed over half of the box but the remainder were included in a major fire-sale when I switched strictly to CC's.
This was a terrific blend but was a big departure from most of Pepin's lines. |
Re: DPG El Centurian
I smoked one Friday night and thought it was good, but not worth $12.
The first third was okay, with a little bit of harshness. The second third was amazing!!! Super sweet and tasty. The final third faded back to be similar to the first third. If this was in my humi for more than a day it may have improved, coming straight from a B&M you never know how it was stored. If the whole cigar was as good as the middle, it would be a $12 stick. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7216/7...5462503c25.jpg |
Re: DPG El Centurian
I also smoked mine Friday night, First off was I had such High expectations for this stick after enjoying the lancero version. Like Shane mentioned in his review above the first 1/4 -1/3 was a little rough but then it become much smoother & creamier, I was hoping it to have the extreme CC flavor like the Lancero, but it never really happened. Overall a very good stick, would I buy another for $12.... Maybe.
