Lighter or matches?

Just curious to which you prefer. Recently switched from torches to match lighting, not sure of any differences at this point.

I use lighters because they are much easier for me.

Torch.

Over the years I've used everything from long cigar matches, to cedar strips, to every kind of lighter including Zippos (in those days of yore) and compared to a solid torch, they seem like rubbing sticks together.

Any noticeable differences in taste?

Torch usually, might be switching to matches soon.

No preferences, I'll use whatever is handy that has a flame which isn't polluted or tainted (ie: tiki torches)

Re: Lighter or matches?

Single torch here but there was a time when I tried the matches/cedar strip thing. It was just too much work as I am impatient that way.

I prefer a torch but matches are my choice when I'm out of the wind.

I use both mainly a single flame torch.

I have recently switched to a soft single flame and I really like not having that scorched taste, I still use a single or double torch flame for touch ups.

I agree, have noticed a better taste with a soft flame...

I'll use whatever is handy at the time, although I do have a favorite soft-flame Xikar lighter.

If I'm using matches, I usually let it burn for a second or two before putting it to the cigar. It might be just me, but I like to wait until the sulfur smell is burned away first.

Great posts guys, it would be nice if some people could say more about taste differences, before I invest in a good torch, getting a good light and burn after going thru about 3 or 4 matches...

Re: Lighter or matches?

You can get the big matches for lighting your grill at the grocery or hardware store usually.

I have smoked several thousand cigars and notice no difference in taste using all methods of lighting. I use a single flame torch as it is most efficient. Much like cigars its all a matter of personal preference. :2

These run about $2 each delivered if you buy 3. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/compact...t-lighter-4179

If you don't mind something a little bigger these also are cheap and work great. And they seem to run forever on a fill.

Bob is wise. And while I have not smoked nearly the number of cigars he has, I have smoked enough that I notice no difference in taste and use a torch as my preference but will use anything as the need dictates.

Re: Lighter or matches?

I have one lighter that the ignition is broken so sometimes I light the flame off a match

I use my torches unless I have to use a soft flame or a match because they're my only option. I have never noticed a taste difference before but the ease of the lighter wins for me.

Nope. The butane used in Bic or other disposable lighters is both colorless and odorless. :tu

+1. zippos on the other hand are not. but you can buy a butane soft flame insert for zippo lighters

Alright, cool. I was told to avoid Bics because of the "harsh smell". I used a Zippo to light my pipe one time and...it tasted terrible. Wasted a bowl of Squadron Leader :td

Soft flame, torch, match, tinderbox, hot manifold, whatever it takes.

Bob and Peter have the right of it.

This; no difference in flavor from one to the next, only a measurable difference in convenience.
