...balut. This horrid abomination (which I'm certain many of you will promote as delicious) is the Philippine national delicacy. It's a fully developed duck egg (17-18 days old) that has been boiled. I saw these years ago in Subic Bay when I was in the Navy. The bars all sell them.

Running a close second would be the "century egg", also asian and also wretched. Basically, it's an egg that has been preserved in alkaline for much too long of a time (in this case, any time would be too long). It turns to gray-green gelatin that reeks of ammonia and sulphur. Can you say good eats? NOT!

Balut would definitely top my list, but since you already mentioned it, I’ll go with anything that is still squirming or moving when it’s served to me. Let’s take octopus for instance. There are some Korean restaurants in L.A. that serve fresh cut-up tentacles that are still moving when it’s served. If that’s not bad enough, the server will warn you to watch out of the suction cups because they are still active and can cause you to choke/asphyxiate if one gets caught in the back of your throat. :tpd: I would not eat most of the things he does on that show....but I still LOVE to watch it. I find it extremely interesting to see the weird foods people eat around the world.

Great show for sure. I got a kick out of the few times he wasn’t able to eat something (Stinky Tofu hamburger in Taiwan and that really stinky fruit called durian)

hahah Go to any asian market for duck/chicken eggs...I personally don't like the taste but to each his own...Same goes for Durian...I really don't like coagulated pig blood...:pu I have no idea why we put it in our soups!!!

I saw Anthony Bourdain in Africa, (the show) he was with the Bushmen and they killed a wild hog. They tore out the large intestine, squeezed out what was inside and roasted it over open flame. They did not wash it at all.
They ate it next to the pile of dung they squeezed out of the pig.
I think that is where I would draw the line.
Tony described it as "hot roasted poop chute".

I like to think that I'll try anything once, but those big honking white crubs that Andrew Zimmerman eats really turn me off. I'm pretty sure I could not eat those. He is the man.:pu

For the record I've tried the blutwurst/black pudding before and it's awful. Think, if you ever bit your tounge really hard, flavor that with a gross bran meal..

I've eaten sesos tacos (cow brains) before in East L.A. They weren't bad once you got over the texture and the fact that, well, they look like brains. Been there, done that, so need to eat them again. :D

This cheese from Sardinia, Italy is known locally as “casu marzu.” It’s is famous for the cheese fly larvae found inside. The cheese goes beyond the normal fermentation process to near decomposition, a result of the digestive action of the larvae. The insects are introduced into the cheese in order to get it to this stage. Some people clear the larvae before eating but some enjoy this cheese with a side of larvae. Seconds anyone?

I can't bring myself to eat anything that is higher on the food chain than we are. Bear comes to mind. I would never eat bear. Pretty much any carnivore.


And for those who say they would never eat insects...ever eat lobster? Shrimp? Crabs? All they are is GIANT BUGS THAT LIVE IN THE OCEAN!!! "No, they're crustaceans," people say. My a$$. They have a bunch of legs, an exoskeleton, and antennae sticking out of their heads. They are BUGS! :pu

Heck I eat them once in awhile, honest to god just for the fun of it (usually drunk) there is a place I reccommend here in the states which is on the mild end. http://www.hotlix.com/ I have been known to grab a live cricket once in awhile and have a snack (last time I was too drunk and he did not stay down, ask Andy aka Dooge) They say you consume so many a year while you sleep:dr

I've eaten bugs before and didn't really mind it. There's a place in L.A., Typhoon (http://www.typhoon.biz/), that specializes in it. We started off with a small bowl of ants. They weren't my favorite since they were kind of bitter. Then they brought out crickets with shoe string potatoes and garlic. Quite tasty and a good play on textures. Then we progressed to the chicken stuffed waterbugs. Man, those came out the same way they went in. :D Anyway, it was our first time eating insects so we also ordered some 'normal' food.

Is it as pungent as everyone says?

My grandpappy made some squirrel stew when I was a youngin. At least that's what he said it was. The whole meal was game...duck, venison, pheasant...and squirrel stew. Good vittles.

I came close to trying Balut in a wet market in Manila, but wasn't quite hammered enough. Settled for watching my brother in law slurp one down. :r

One thing that's never appealed to me are Mountain Oysters. No interest there at all. Do we have any Mountain Oyster munchers around? :D

Although I believe that people have consumed bull testicles (mountain oysters), they have become urban legend. I've been to a LOT of restaurants and stores throughout this state since moving here in 1994, and I have yet to see ONE. I also would be very interested (and very skeptical) to hear of a real experience with them.

On the other hand, you can get balut in just about any market or bar in the Philippines.
