Gurkha the monticristo of NCs
I just had my 15 ever gurkha tonight a assassin robusto and after a quick pre draw i though to myself "oh not again" yep it was plugged but i pressed on anyway trying to nurse it and after the half way mark it pretty much exploded on me.
So that went in the stinky and i got down to some thinking construction wise (or lack there of) is a gurkha the bastard child of the cuban montecristo line as both seem to churn out a ton of cigars both seem to have issues maintaining quality construction (13/15 of the gurkhas have either been plugged, soft, loose or exploded) So dose anyone els find the Gurkhas to be inconsistent or am i just having a really bad run of luck and if i am can you suggest a good Gurkha with a flavour other than burning carpet maybe dark chocolate and spice with earthy notes like a nice montie edmundo. |
Re: Gurkha the monticristo of NCs
A LOT of guys on here hate Ghurkas. I've bought a couple boxes for $50, and I've had a couple of their Status, and the one infused with Cognac. I didn't have any problems. Maybe I'm really lucky?

Re: Gurkha the monticristo of NCs
I have never had a clogged Gurkha... I have probably smoked more Gurkha cigars than any other manufacturers... I would check your B&M, maybe they are over humidifying...

I would respectfully suggest punctuation in your posts. Without it, it makes for a difficult read. I find Cuban Montecristos to be of much higher quality in flavor and construction. Just one man's opinion. |
Re: Gurkha the monticristo of NCs
Arr my introduction thread explains the spelling/grammar you dont have to be respectful about it it just sucks dont worry im not trying to torture your eyes.....or am i.
As for B&Ms it shouldn't be the problem Gurkha dosnt exist on the English market so i have to have them shipped from America and i make sure to store them for at least a month in my humi between 60-65% before smoking them. |

@lenguamor HAHA good point but no i like the change of pace of NC cigars there is nothing like it coming out of cuba just like there is nothing like a cuban coming out of any NC sticks.
@pnoon Dont worry its like learning Russian youll get the hang of it eventually or just drown yourself in vodka to make the pain go away. |

Re: Gurkha the monticristo of NCs
I've only bought some of the gurkha's found on Cigar Bid, which I'm not sure are even part of their normal line you would find in an actual shop. Few have been plugged. There's only 1 that I really didn't care for, the rest have been decent for how cheap they were. Their wrappers kind of irk me though.

Re: Gurkha the monticristo of NCs
I am a newbie for sure but almost every Gurkha I have smoked has been bad to real bad. THe exception was the Legend Series VI I got from Cigar Bid. It is decent for the price (not great). From the amount I have learned from the guys and gals on this site and tasting a bunch, I would not buy another Gurkha. Unfortunately I learned that after buying a bunch. I still have to find a place for 20+ of my stash that I can't bear to light up.
I wouldn't compare them to a Cuban MC. I have had some not burn well of my MC 4s but overall quality is pretty good and the taste was consistent. |

Re: Gurkha the monticristo of NCs
I've had a few good Gurkhas, a few bad Gurkhas and one or two great Gurkhas. My wife even bought me the Spec Ops box of Gurkhas and had them shipped to me in Iraq. My favorite so far is the Red Dragon ( sent to me by Hotreds)
But, with that being said, I think their customer relations is lacking. I jumped on the opportunity to be part of the Gurkha Tasters Club (where we were supposed to be getting monthly cigars to try and post reviews). This lasted for about a month, after a pretty extensive screening process, and then all contact ended. Six months later, after we had all begged for some acknowledgement, they respond that they are not going to do this anymore A group of Gurkha fans and not even any contact for that length of time. Needless to say, I have been turned off slightly. |

But losing to ManU at Old Trafford is nothing to hang your head about. It's the draws or losses against Swansea, Norwich, Wigan, Stoke and the like that are REALLY painful. |
Re: Gurkha the monticristo of NCs
Not really painful betfred do some pretty good odds on how badly they will loose.

Re: Gurkha the monticristo of NCs
I have not had any issues with plugged Gurkhas and I have smoked rather more than 15.
That said, I have had uneven burn problems on almost every perfecto vitola from Gurkha. I recall no burn or draw problems with any parejos - no wait, there's a box-pressed toro with green and red in the band, they have boated I think I remember. But the large formats (7.5 inch and up) have smoked very well. I generally like the flavors Gurkha offers. I think these cigars really have to be bought at auction as the MSRP is just too high. |
Re: Gurkha the monticristo of NCs
I'm confused, maybe because I'm relatively new to the hobby, but what exactly is it about Gurkha that seems to draw the ire of a majority of the smoking community. I had one yesterday that was almost totally unmemorable, either bad or good. I was half expecting it to explode in a cloud of nerve gas when I lit it after reading these boards for a while.

Re: Gurkha the monticristo of NCs
I think its because us cigar smokers must be in some way related to crows as they have real shiny bands that are real nice to "collect"

Re: Gurkha the monticristo of NCs
I always felt Gurkha's were the Gurkha's of the NC world, really not much else to compare them to. Taste like sh!t, smoke like sh!t. But like what you smoke, smoke what you like.

By the way I asked the same question about "why is everyone so hard on these smokes here". Then I smoked the cuban selection. Again, if these sticks were a buck each it would be different but they weren't. I got suckered by the ads and reviews on a large cigar site. The reviews part really bothers me as people were saying these were the sticks they put away for special occasions! If that is true, holy shite. These poor bastards. I just don't think they are legit (can't be with some of the flavors I taste in it) |
Re: Gurkha the monticristo of NCs
K. Hansotia is a marketing genius because he keeps putting crap out on the market and people keep buying them. Maybe I'm just a snob, but I don't think so. Of course some people would say the same about Pete Johnson.

Yeah I love Pete's smokes. I'm just saying each manufacturer has their detractors. But I honestly feel Pete puts alot of heart and soul and hard work into his blends. Hansotia just throws something together and calls it gold. Like that cognac infused crap he came out with.
