What to save? What to give?
So I am looking tomorrow-ish to spring on a couple samplers and a box of Lot 23's.
My question to you guys, are there any sticks you have that you dont give up for free? For example, frequently I have buddies over for a smoke and such, like to night, or when I go out once in a blue moon my roomate will ask to join me, and I usually leave my humidor open and it's on a "take whatever you want" basis. This is with the exception of my Perdomo 10th Ann. Champagne that I am saving for Christmas. I know most of y'all are pretty generous is your sticks as I have experienced with the bombs, NST's and people I have met from here (ie, Dball). But is there like 2 assortments you keep, as in you will open this humidor open to anyone, but also keep a humidor that are just for you? Just curious how you guys differentiate, if at all. |
Re: What to save? What to give?
Personally, I have a huge cabinet with roughly 2000 sticks that I generally let friends browse in.....except for one drawer. That one is mine. Mostly singles....uniques that I have obtained through trade with brothers here, gifts from friends, sticks with meaning more than tobacco. If you visit me, you are welcome to sample all that I have. Except that drawer. Those are my babies and are not sold or given except on rare occasions and for solemn purposes. If you are smoking a cigar from that drawer, something momentus has occurred and we are marking the occasion with burnt offerings. Or you stole it, and will soon die. One of the two.

Re: What to save? What to give?
Nothing wrong with having some specials sticks you will be the only one smoking.

Re: What to save? What to give?
Generally, If I only have one of something and I haven't tried it yet I don't let anyone take it...

Re: What to save? What to give?
Don't give any away, horde them all and tell everyone to get bent :tu
|
Re: What to save? What to give?
I just let friends browse at will. Doesn't bother me as long as I know they'll smoke them entirely and not just halfway.

I was kinda partial to around 17/100, but only for brick and mortar cigars as they are better :tu |
Re: What to save? What to give?
I only have a couple close friends that are allowed to rumage thru the coolers. Anything they pick is A-OK... this included a 100 year old cigar once :tu Other than those people, I'll pick out something nice for them.

Re: What to save? What to give?
Much like Scott said: I have a couple "sticks with meaning more than tobacco", but for the most part, my friends and guests are welcome to what I have, and if they ask me to choose, I give them from my best.

Re: What to save? What to give?
I usually pick for my friends if we're going to smoke. But I try to pick something out that they'll enjoy. I only do this cuz my humidors are in my wife and I's bedroom. Plus I've kind of have a couple boxes on hand of everyday/share with friends cigars.

Re: What to save? What to give?
For me it depends, if it is a non-smoker friend I prefer they smoke something cheaper. I don't think they will enjoy a good cigar much more than a budget stick. I don't let my friends browse I just grab something I think they will enjoy.
If it is a bomb or MAW/PIF I don't mind sending anything I have unless it was a HTF gifted stick, I don't like to send gifted sticks unless I have a few of the same stick. |
Re: What to save? What to give?
I have a drawer for me. Everything else is fair game.

Re: What to save? What to give?
The only people I've shared cigars with (other than sending stuff to people on forums) haven't been cigar smokers, so I hand pick something that I think will work with a new palate, won't be too strong, and I won't be heartbroken if they only smoke a little of it. As far as sending stuff to BOTL's through forums, there isn't much in my collection that I won't send, other than gifts I've gotten from other people and some of the more rare ones.

Re: What to save? What to give?
If they like Arganese, they can have anything in my Humi!!!:D
|
Re: What to save? What to give?
I have given non-smokers great sticks only to see them let it burn out after the first third and then say well I was done anyway. I can't give them something too cheap or they get upset. I think non-smokers like the idea of smoking a good cigar better than the act of smoking a good cigar!

Re: What to save? What to give?
I mostly have sticks that have been given to me or bombed, I try and hand out stuff I have already tried.

Re: What to save? What to give?
If I allow someone into my house, they can have any cigar they want. My friends are way more important than my cigars.

Funny thing is that generally what I smoke and what those friends smoke is so far apart, I actually keep a few of what they like on hand so they have something to grab! Good example, best friend likes Hoyo Dark Knight #1's. I have a mostly full box of #1's and #2's in my cooler that I'm just "aging" :) |

Re: What to save? What to give?
I will give out anything that I have to a knowledgable smoker that will appreciate it. Even if I haven't tried it yet I will give it as long as I have more of it. I am a pretty generous individual and love spreading some cigar love around as long as it is appreciated. I would hate to hand out an LP9 or T-52 to someone who is newer into cigars because I would fear it wouldn't be appreciated by the novice smoker.

Re: What to save? What to give?
I only give my 1492s to newbs, because everyone else brings preconceptions and expectations.
Sorry, Tom. |

Re: What to save? What to give?
Over nearly 40 years of smoking I've probably given away as many cigars as I've smoked, and many of those have been prized sticks. But I'll choose what to give to each individual, so that each person receives something I know they'll enjoy, and a truly great stick isn't mismatched with the smoker.
It's only happened a few times, but I have made mistakes where I gave someone a cigar that I valued highly and he stamped it out after a few puffs without regard to the cigar itself nor my feelings. Not recently, though. |
Re: What to save? What to give?
For me it depends on who it is, I have friends that I know that are avid cigar guys/gals that they can take what they like cause I know they will apreciate what they are going to smoke. There are others that I pick for. I also have a small singles draw that I have like limited that may eventually get smoked but only by me.
|
Re: What to save? What to give?
It's pretty much up to how you do it--whatever works for you and makes you comfortable. I usually smoke alone, but the people I sometimes smoke with do not know enough about all the various brands, etc. to be able to select a cigar from my stash, so I just pick for all of us, and just about everything is fair game.
|
Re: What to save? What to give?
I always keep my collection split into two piles - things I purchased, and things given to me. If it's a gifted stick, then its off limits. Anything I picked up is open season, sort of...
It's a matter of who is over. If you're a regular smoker who appreciates a good cigar, nothing is off limits. I don't even have to know you well, just as long as I know you appreciate a cigar. I'll be happy to pick something nice out for you or you're welcome to browse through yourself. But if you're like one guy I know who smokes a robusto in 20 minutes and thinks grape flavored blunts are perfectly acceptable smokes, well then, I'll pick something out for you that's a little more fitting with your ability to enjoy it. That allows me to stretch my limited resources out and share more premium smokes with people that will really enjoy them (or ruin new folks, brehahaha). But if you were the guy who likes grape blunts, powersmokes a cigar right into the ground, etc, and you came up to me and said "man, I've really been wanting to try an opus" (and you weren't fishing), I would be happy to share it with you, even though I know you wouldn't taste it anymore than a yardgar, because in that moment, its more than the leaf, and I've given you something that blessed you. Who am I to dictate how that enjoyment has to be felt? :2 |
Re: What to save? What to give?
The occasional yardgar smoker I will pick out several for them to chose from. If you are a serious BOTL then all my humidors are open for your enjoyment except for just a couple of special smokes.
