Could you Would you?
I have read that men like Winston Churchill, Ernie Kovacs, and Mark Twain smoked 12-20 Cigars a day. Ernie Kovacs smokes Cubans, so here are my questions;
1.Would you smoke 12-20 cigars a day if money and time were not a factor? 2.If yes, what would they be? All the same or a mix? 3.If yes what size or does that matter. My answer: 1.Yes, I have done 6-8 a day for 5 days before and believe I could increase and I plan on doing so one day. I currently smoke 2-3 a day with 4-6 a day on the weekends. Time and money are the 2 factors stopping me now. 2.They would definitely be a mix. They would have start with mild to med and to move up to a stronger smoke at the end of the day. Such as Oliva G, LaUncia 300, Perdomo Champaign, J. Fuego Origen, Macanudo maduro . 3.I think I would not smoke 12-20 6x60’s. Probably more robustos, double coronas etc… |
Re: Could you Would you?
I would say no.
Many health warnings claim that more than 3-4 a day, everyday, is considered excessive and is a high risk for health issues. (Of course that is all just made up information) I typically smoke about 1-3 a week during weekdays and about 4 on the weekends, for a total of about 3-7 a week. If the health risks where non-existent, cost was no issue, my job allowed me to be productive while smoking and it was always 65 degress outside I would enjoy about 4-5 a day. |
Re: Could you Would you?
If "time is not a factor" means I would still have ample time to spend time with the wife and kids, then I would smoke to my heart's content. But that number falls WAY short of 12 cigars a day. I can just imagine the heartburn from that.

Re: Could you Would you?
Ideal for me is probably two a week. More than that and they lose a bit of "specialness" for me.

And the truth is I just wouldn't enjoy it. I smoke primarily for the flavor, with social interaction a close second; at the rate of 8-12 a day, I don't think I'd be tasting much of anything anymore...and I doubt that any but the most hardcore here would want to be around me if I did...*phew!* :r |
Re: Could you Would you?
1. No way, that is just too many for me. I do not see myself ever smoking more than 3-4 a day if that. Since i only get to smoke 1-2 a week if that, I like to enjoy my smokes and taste all the different flavors. For some reason when I get up around 4 in one day that all goes out the window and they all start tasting the same.
2. If i was up to 3-4 a day it would have to be a mixture of smokes starting with the weakest first and working my way up. 3. I would go for something in the 5x50 range |
Re: Could you Would you?
2-3 per day would be my max and even that would not be consistently everyday unless maybe I worked at a B&M or something.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I smoke maybe 3 per week so definitely not.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
This is great... the answers here are very interesting.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
1-2 a day, weekends 3-5.
No way I could do 20 a day, I agree with Doctorossi, they would lose that specialness. |
Re: Could you Would you?
If there weren't any health consequences and I had the time and money, I would smoke several per day.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
A contributing factor, for me, is that I prefer long-lasting sticks. I'm usually smoking something that takes me a good hour-and-a-half to finish. I couldn't smoke that many of the kind of cigar I prefer in a day, if I tried.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
Heck no!! Its a little joy to light up a stogie, and I think if I smoked that many per day the joy would fade and it would be very habit forming. I wouldn't enjoy it near as much.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
Currently I smoke 2-3 per week, with maybe 2-3 per day when I'm on vacation and that is just about right for me.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
1. No.
2. N/A 3. N/A |
Re: Could you Would you?
There are very few things that I would do 12-20 times per day. Cigars are not one of them.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I'm retired and have plenty of time to do what I want. I live in a climate that allows me to smoke outside pretty much anytime I want. There are lots of cigar friendly establishments close by should the weather take a bad turn. I have a fairly large stock of cigars laid down.
I smoke one, occasionally two, a day. ;) |
Re: Could you Would you?
Nahhh. That would be overkill - I'd be worried about burning out my taste buds at that rate.
I'd settle for 1-2 a day. :tu Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Could you Would you?
I smoke usually 2 per day, and sometimes 3-5 on Saturdays. I can't imagine smoking much more than this. On the few occassions where I've gone overboard (6+ in a day), I usually do not smoke for 1-2 days afterwards because my whole mouth feels scorched and I cannot taste anything from a cigar without a day or 2 break.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I think 12-20 would ruin the "specialness" of enjoying a good stick. While during herfs, I do smoke anywhere from 5-10 sticks a day. But at the end of those days, my palate is toast and I don't think I could handle that on the regular basis.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
Honestly, you would have to be awake 24 hours straight and always have a cigar hanging out of your mouth to smoke 20. Yeah, that doesn't sound like a good time.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I find that smoking 5+ cigars A day for too many days in a row burns my pallet and I can't taste anything for several days. So no.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
my palate is usually shot after 5 full bodied smokes in a day so I would not smoke that many given the chance
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I would like to know how much of each smoke these guys smoked. 1/4, 1/3, or half would quickly diminish the effort/time needed to smoke 12 aday. Nubbing 12 6X60's in a day would be a serious feet indeed.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I think the 12-20 a day is a myth more than reality. Is it possible, sure, but is it likely, no.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I would say no as I have been imposing self discipline. I only smoke generally on weekends with around 2-3 cigars in a week.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
Don't think 20 cigars would be possible unless I didn't sleep and they were all short smokes.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
Doubt I would/could even if I had the means and the time. I smoke them to enjoy them and smoking that many in a day would ruin it for me.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
No way would I want to. I at most smoke 3 cigars in a day, and that's a rare feat. I would say if I smoke 1-2 cigars a week that's plenty. The feeling I get when I get to smoke one is a treat that I wouldn't want to lessen.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
Try to enjoy a small smoke each day during my lunch hour....maybe 4 per week there. Evenings, perhaps 3 a week. Weekends 2-3. Ten a week is about the most I do, once again they are for relaxation and enjoyment, some weeks when things are busy will be lucky to catch 2-3 the whole week. If I had unlimited resources, I would have my dream cabin by a lake somewhere, probably one in the morning and one in the evening.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
No way I would. I smoke 1-3 a week, and that's plenty. Like many others here, the specialty would wear off quick, and I wouldn't have a palette.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I currently enjoy the 3-4 a week that I burn. I honestly have no desire to increase that amount. That may change given a different lifestyle and if tobacco had no negative consequences. Maybe 1-2 a day max?
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I smoke 1-2 a day and on Friday and Saturday 5 each day manly because I am drinking
I could never smoke 15-20 that is crazy |
Re: Could you Would you?
I actually smoked three cigars today; the first was a Cuban Fonseca, which was remarkably good; the second a Leon Jimenez which was decidedly off and I quit halfway through; the third a '00 Cuaba Divino, which I usually really dig...but not tonight. My taste buds were tired and I shouldn't have even lit that third stick...wasted it.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
No. At most I would smoke a few everday. I don't even come close to that right now.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
In a word, no.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I smoke 2 to 3 cigars per day, sometimes a few more. I agree with most of the responders here, it would lose some of the effect if I smoked that many a day.
As for the medical warnings, I survived 30 some years of police work and prostrate cancer, I'll take my chances. George Burns made it to 100, so how bad can it be? |
Re: Could you Would you?
I think I could only deal with 3-4 a day consistently, mainly because I love my toros and typically get 1.5 hours on one, so that'd be 4.5-6 hours daily spent smoking a cigar. It'd also ruin the experience for me. I like to sit back and enjoy the smoke and pick out flavors if I can, the only time I don't do this is when with others, and even then I just scale back how much I try to pick out flavors as there are other things going on, if the smoke tastes good I make note to grab another and smoke by myself sometime.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I could but I wouldn't. Smoking is for relaxation and fun, smoking 12 cigars a day is nice on a big herf, but where's the fun and relaxation if you do it 7 days a week?
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I am with most others here on this topic. Smoking is almost ritualistic for me and it is special for me when I do burn. With that said at this point I may burn 2-3 during the week and perhaps the same on the weekend for about 4-6 a week. Herfing would definately include more.
I just enjoy cigars so much that I think it would ruin it for me to smoke that many in a day everyday. To each his own however...:tu |
Re: Could you Would you?
Um, no. No I wouldn't. Right now I smoke one each day when I get off work to relax and decompress. During the few days I'm off work between Monday and Friday when the kids get on the school bus I light up a tabac especial or the like to enjoy with my morning coffee, and maybe have another stronger stick in the late afternoon. I really don't smoke around my family though so that helps me keep the consumption down.
As to those power smokers doing 12 - 20 a day... after being in the Marines for 10.5 years and working DOD Special Police/PPS for 8 years, I'm betting that number includes sticks that were partially smoked then had to be snuffed after an inch or so. I can't relight sticks, they always taste foul so I'm wondering if that is 12 - 20 partials instead of full sticks. |
Re: Could you Would you?
No way...even if I had the loot!!! I am a 1 a week right now and 3-4 on the weekends
|
Re: Could you Would you?
One per day and a few extras on the weekend is all I can handle!
At a herf, the sky's the limit.:ss |
Re: Could you Would you?
Did you ever notice that you never see a picture of Churchill with a cigar shorter than then 4 or 5 inches? I seriously doubt the guy ever burnt his fingers or looked for a paperclip to finish the nub. He probably smoke one until he set it down somewhere, and then picked up a new one and started smoking it.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I find it interesting that Freud died from oral cancer, yet Churchill and the others did not. Could heredity play a factor in development of cancer, or are there possibly other factors involved, like exposure to something else in the environment?
|
Re: Could you Would you?
And to answer the OP, no way. After about 4 cigars in a day I have a hard time tasting anything else, of course I've been smoking cigars since 1996...
|
Re: Could you Would you?
Nope. 3 to 4 is my max on the weekend and maybe one per day during the week. I don't even know where I'd find the time to smoke 15-20 a day.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I'm a newbie and have had three today. Will burn at least another one tonight.
|
Re: Could you Would you?
I agree with those making the case for the ritual of savoring a smoke. I smoke 2 or 3 a week, and in the intervening days between smokes I'm pleased to remember how much I enjoyed the last one. If I were burning off a dozen a day, it would seem no different than going through a pack of cigarettes every day, just a mindless habit with no satisfaction.
