So Why did you join the Asylum?
I started a thread like this at the CS sight at a time when there was nothing but doom and gloom about the upcoming changes. It was interesting and uplifting to hear why each member joined. Some positive reinforcement at a time that needed it.
I believe (although I'm not sure) that this site was born out of the chaos on the other board. I originally lurked around here out of curiosity. I saw many of the old posters here, and many that post on both. There was a comforting sense of the familiar here, and decided that being a member of both forums would broaden my horizons. So..... I have two questions. Why did you join CA? How many other cigar related forums do you belong and actively post to? |
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
I just got the invite and joined. I don't believe any forum is better or worse than this one. In the end, they all serve their purpose and it's great if there are different forums with different goals & personalities to accommodate all us different cigar smoking folks. I'm a member of 4 other boards but post more often here.

Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
My friends are here, why would I want to be somewhere my friends are not?
|
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
In truth, CS kinda died when everyone moved. It has picked up, and I still check it out everyday, but I came over here to be with the friends and B/SOTL that I know and love. Simple as that.

Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
This site is non commercial and with the gang of 11, feels like the old forum.

Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
i joined as a continuation from the previous site where we were all monkeys...i will never leave this site, and for those of you who have read of my recent life activities and the overwhelming support of the inmates you will understand why. There are the best people here. it is so rare to find such a place, consider yourselves very blessed to be surrounded by such prisoners. if you have yet to be in a tough spot you might not fully appreciate or really know the character of these people, if you have gone through a rough stretch then i'm sure you know...if you have let us know. i say that as an encouragement to all of you out there who might be to proud to open up and let us know if you are in a pinch. please let the bro and sis's know and you will be BLOWN AWAY!!!

Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
I sought out a nice cigar forum to learn from and hopefully grow my cigar knowledge. Maybe broaden the cigars that I smoke?
When I watched the folks that had ran the ape show start to pack up and leave, I made the decision to come here and be with the people that helped grow that forum to what it was. I still skim CS from time to time, but this is the only other forum for ceegars that I even look at. You guys gotta help me get away from Padron, RP, and Mr. Pepin............ :D |
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
All the cool kids hang out here. :D
|
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
Was sent an invite and saw everyone I had been forming friendships with online over here so it was a no brainer. Still belong to the other site but post almost exclusively here.
Besides the voices in my head told me too, :D |
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
Well, I tried to MASShole banter over at CS but since all the MASSholes were here I ended up talking to myself alot.
Seriously though, the 11 have provided us with a great, comfortable place to socialize. Do I still visit CS, yeah... but my visits are very brief...to check any random PMs, etc. I havent posted there in several weeks and dont even view the new posts. There is some info available on CS that isnt YET available on CA... YET |
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
I joined CS because I liked the people there.... when all the people I liked moved, I moved with them. :D
|
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
Because I like smoking cigars.
|
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
Nobody else would have me
|
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
I didn't like the direction CS was/is going in. Feels like it is "going corporate".

Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
At first I moved here because most of my friends moved. I continued to lurk and post occasionally on CS. But then Richard(tzaddi) made a very insightful post about not wanting his posts used for commercial purposes. That is now the nature of both CS and Top25, anything you post becomes Jon Caputo's property. I dont like the idea of my intellectual property(feeble as it may be) being used to enhance someone's pocket book. :fl

Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
To everyones great credit we've pretty much avoided these types of CS conversations here.
The easy answer, for me is...Julian sent me an email with a link saying it was working.... so I signed up. :) The harder answer is ...the future, as some have commented, was presented to us to be commercial and part of some sort of homogenized amalgamation of 3-4 different cigar cultures who's only enhanced purpose I could figure out was .... well it wasn't what brought so many together there. It's like the local bar you have hung out at, made friends and called home for a long time. It changes ownership to "consolidated bars" and you start enjoying it less for whatever reason even before the remodel. Your friends start drifting away to other places to hang out. The vibe of the place gets worse. What do you do? This place was the answer to that question for a number of us. These on line communities are cool. They exist because folks "choose" to make them home. They can just as easily die based upon people making different choices based upon real or perceived changes in their hangouts. Everyone joins, posts, reads, interacts. decides to set-up shop, wherever you feel comfortable. There are many cigar forums to choose from. There are folks scratching their heads about this place springing up from nowhere. I'm one of them. |

Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
I was looking for a new place hang out and talk about cigars and other things. As others have said I didn't care for the direction in which CS was moving. I frequent one other cigar board but most of my time is spent here.

Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
Indeed, our beloved jungle turning into a MySpace type social networking morass( in January we are told) had a lot of us looking for refuge elsewhere. Happily, many of us have found our refuge in the asylum, thanks to the Team of 11 who saw the handwriting on the wall. Thanks to them the spirit of the jungle lives on here. 'Nuff said.:ss:dance:

Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
I joined the "other site" because a dude I met playing pool at a local dive told me I'd get a bunch of free cigars. I found it was far more than that and I stayed there because of the people and that's why I joined the Cigar Asylym and that's why I'll stay here now.
Uhm, well OK that and Medication Time! ;) |
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
Because this is where my family is. :D
|
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
I came here because I knew this was where my friends were.
|
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
I got the invite and I joined. The morale at CS at the time was very depressing, and the Asylum was a ray of light in that dark time. I still post at CS, but consider this place home now.

Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
Why did I join the Asylum?
In not so many words.... ....It was something that needed to be done, and something I chose to be a part of. |
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
Because Cigar Live was falling apart and this seems like the place to be:ss
|
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
It's also small, therefore more tight-knit and it's grass roots formation helps really make CA a CIGAR oriented place...
da klugs and bobarian's posts above is right on. |
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
The first cigar forum (and the main one I visit besides here) was CigarPass. I had heard about what had happened in regards to the purchased and yapped about it in my blog, making specific note about the moderator changes. As I was checking a few days later to see who visited, I saw a link coming from here so I decided to check it out. I was very happy to see a forum dedicated to the kinship of BOTL/SOTL and joined.
I was even happier to see that I was received as is and without question, something that I had experienced only at CigarPass previously. So I decided to make this another home-away-from-home forum for me to discuss cigars and to share my finds (right now in the form of reviews -- I've been on the road too much to properly participate in passes until recently), even if they were only new to me, with others. :) One of the best decisions I made in regards to my hobby was to join here. The knowledge and friendliness is like no other I've seen. |
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
I joined because all my friends were moving over here, and I was not at all happy with the way CS was going. Since I joined the Asylum I have hardley even looked at the old board. This is my new home and I am Very Happy to be here.

Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
Was invited to the site by one of the Mods and glad I accepted,,,,this is one of the best out there.
|
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
For whatever their individual reasons were, people were leaving CS and heading to other boards or starting new boards. I feared that some friends would be lost, and hoped for a place where all those friends would want to be.
And then 10 great friends allowed me to join them on this excellent adventure...and within a few days, another 1200+ great friends joined us too. :) "Is this Heaven?" "No, it's Cigar Asylum". ...apologies to Kevin Costner. ;) |
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
Most of the BOTLs that I had interacted with on CS left and came here. I got an invite to come over......SO.... here I am.
|
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
You guys tried your best to lose me but I found you anyway....:ss
|
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
I came seeking asylum...
As corny as that sounds, it became uncomfortable at the other place. I still check in from time to time but I feel the "knowledge" is here. I am passionate about what I do and between the 11, the 12th and an occasional thread about cake - I fit in here honestly. I really hope to hit the Shack Herf or Ybor in '09 - it would be great to shake some hands... |
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
I became attatched to what CS had become to me, and when it crumbled around me, I just wanted to find that Place again. And, I think this is that Place....
|
Re: So Why did you join the Asylum?
I joined to keep in contact with some amazing people who have touched my life in one way or another. By sending friendly hellos, helping me with auto advice, or simply goofing around...these people are great friends and I would hate to lose them.

And everyone who I look up to, respect, crack jokes about, get cuffed on the back of the head by all chose to make this their home base, so I did too. |

Because Fred (macms) told me to and I never argue with my elders!
