To tap or roll??? That is the question
The other night I was out with some friends and I was snoking. I had a fairly long ash and this guy who thinks he knows everything about everything said it was time for me to ash. So I tapped it and he said I should have rolled the ash off.
I am sure its personal prefeenece, but it got me thinkijg and I have the roll tequnique and im not sure i am comfortable with it...+ I dont recall seing anyone do it at herfs. So your opinions on this issue? |
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
Lol...sounds like kind of a d!ck. Never heard/read/seen anything about that mattering in the least.
|
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
Do whatever you like to do. The guy is ridiculous.
|
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
I can't imagine how that would matter at all, plus to only reason to knock off your ash is that you are worried about it falling on your chest or crotch or something...

Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
Depends if you're tapping the ash itself or the body of the cigar. I've seen people destroy the wrappers on cigars by repeatedly forcefully tapping the body of them on the side/lip of the ashtray like one would do if they were ashing a cigarette. Not exactly "wrong" but not exactly good for the capa on the cigar either.
Past that, it's personal preference and how the cigar is rolled. Sometimes the ash breaks off clean with a tap, other times there's a cone of burning tobacco and rolling it off is more effective. Neither is wrong. |
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
I tap the body lightly. Eff that guy. Tell him to smoke his and you'll smoke yours. :sl
|
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
Do whatever you like. You can even ash it on yourself ala Aldrin style!
BTW, does this same guy only use cedar spills to light his cigars with? |
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
Three match technique only. :sh

Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
I do it both ways and as others said this guy sounds like a douche. Guys like that usually don't like me as I am not known for holding back. I probably would have replied back with some snide remark after he made both comments. If there is one thing that annoys the living sh*t out of me, it's people who think they know everything about anything.

Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
Sounds like this guy has a common ailment: The cranial-rectal impaction.
Tap, roll, it doesn't matter. I'd be right there with John, and say something sarcastic to him. I tap because of the carpet outside. I don't want it falling off and burning a hole in it. Plus, I have ruined a shirt or two by having ash fall off early on. |

Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
Personal choice. I would hate to destroy the wrapper on a good cigar because you ashed it forcefully.

Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
I dig a hole and tap lightly on the side of the cigar to ash into it. After a few smokes, the hole starts to fill up a bit. If somebody lets me know that I'm ashing incorrectly, I just kick him in the ash hole.
|
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
I usually just lightly tap the cigar if the ash falls of it was time, if not meh I'll wait a few more draws.
I don't even know what roll it off means :sh |
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
I smoke outside and just use a downward hand motion and the ash lets go.
|
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
My ash usually falls off on the floor, or my shirt. If it doesn't come off with a light tap, I let it go. Without fail, it falls off three draws after the attempt. (little know addition to the rule of threes).
I have found much better smoking results by letting the ash stay on as long as possible. I used to obsess about tapping the ash off and had all sorts of burn problems. |

OP - sounds like the guy is a dick. Smoke your stick however you like it man. If you damage a wrapper.. Well that's a mistake you only make once |
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
Next time roll your ash into his drink :r

I like to show the cigar who is boss. I will normally curb-stomp the ash off.

This is almost as important as knowing if I should wipe front to back or back to front.
I think I should start a poll? |
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
I just stare at my cigars instead of smoking them so I never have this problem.
|
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
Strictly technically speaking, you should always roll.
Most cigars are actually tough enough to withstand a gentle tap, however, you're still running a risk. That being said, do what you want. It's your cigar. |

Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
I give mine a light tap with my index finger, not on the side of the ashtray. If the wrapper is fragile enough that it would crack when I did that, it would probably crack if you gently set it down in the ashtray or looked at it wrong. I'm not too concerned about whether I'm "properly" ashing my cigar, and honestly I'm not even sure what "rolling" it means.

Personal preference. I prefer to "tap that ash like the government". (bonus points if you know what song that's a play on) I remember reading on the old forum that to get the ash to release easier when tapping, do a quick double draw and then tap. Works like a charm when you can't risk the mess. |

Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
Incredible! Obviously your ash was bothering him. He's WAY too anal.
Interesting observation I've noticed since bringing out the Stinky Cigar Ashtrays . . . I've noticed that a lot of cigar smokers 'roll' their ash on the stirrup of an ashtray (all makes, brands and models). I find that inconsiderate. I sit down with a cigar and go to put it down on the stirrup and find someone has rubbed their cigar-smutz all over the stirrup. Where the FU** do you think the next guy can set his cigar? Ever seen that? Rolling the Ash Off: all that means is that you roll the loose ash particles off of your cigar to clean the ash so it doesn't flake off. Agree: it's a very personal preference! It really doesn't matter and certainly doesn't affect your cigar smoke, flavor or aroma one single bit! Of course, this is just my own personal opinion! A good response would be a long, deliberate stare at the pompous ass, then say: Really? You gonna tell me how to knock the ash off of my cigar?? Geeeezzzzzz! Get a life, Pinhead! |
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
I say both, first tap it on his head then roll it on his eye...that's my preference. :tu

Thanks for all the responses guys, yeah he is a douche, but he's my mom's bf....kinda so I have to keep the peace & he doesn't smoke anymore and said his go to when he did was ONYX and to only order from Thompson. I had to bite my tongue. |
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
I usually roll the ash off. Makes me feel like a gentlemanly scholar!
But really - it is just how I learned to ash a cigar. :sh Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
This question has never come up. Given that of the guys I normally smoke with, only one has what I would consider a sound knowledge of cigars (and that sure isn't me!)...and the fact that our favourite ashtray is a damaged Dana35 diff cover sitting on the middle of a 1/4" thick steel work bench, ashing technique has never really bin a topic of discussion -(P
But...we smoke what we like, and we like what we smoke :noon |
Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
Never an issue for me because I always forget and end up wearing it in my lap :)

Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
Enjoy your cigar, "tap and roll" the "expert".

Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
Gotta love the "know it all"!!
I give one lite tap with my finger. If it doesnt release, it wasnt time. Let it ride for a little while longer. I dont ash just to get rid of it, I ash when it gets long and is ready to plop. |

Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question
It all depends on where and when I am smoking.
Outside, hanging? Don't care. Laying in bed drinking late at night? I keep it rolled off. Burned my self too many times. |
