The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
We managed to make it to October 1st before we turned the heat on. Yesterday I turned the gas fireplace on and baked myself all through the football games.
It was real nice here up until the last couple weeks of September and then it just started raining constantly. It went from warm and raining to freezing and raining during the last week. The low was 44 last night. How are you guys doing? |

At least say it's cloudy and rainy, Joe.

Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
yah I too turned the heat on yesterday for the first time. It was 65 in my house but 40 something outside. I set the heat for 68.

Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Where you at Scott?
It got to 42 here on Saturday night and I turned on the heat, because the boy would be cold and my wife suggested it, but I turned it off Sunday morning and didn't turn it on again. Supposed to be our coldest day today at 65 then 70's and 80's the rest of the week. |
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Mine's at 74 so far, but I'm freezing. I wear a hoodie when it's 80, so it's not odd. I'm gonna put my hoodie on and get some coffee, that'll fix it.

Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
H71 L42 here in Chattanooga, TN. Was a perfect 45 degrees this morning. Windows down in short sleeves. My coworkers looked at me like I was nuts when I walked in without a jacket :)
But no rain here. Not today, at least. Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
We've been getting down to the high 50's at night and it's GLORIOUS. This weekend I almost considered starting a fire in the fire pit outside while I enjoyed my morning cigars. Then I decided my laptop would warm me enough and just left it alone because I was too lazy :p
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Overcast with showers and sun breaks right now. Some days it is still warm enough for A/C.
Will probably be this way through October (we always get a nice Indian summer in October). Once November hits it will be rainy for 9 months with some snow, sleet, and/or hail December through February. |
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Kellie and I just turned the AC off this weekend. 61 and loving the chill in the air. :tu

Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
We got to open the windows yesterday for the first time since probably March. Course we closed them and turned on the air before we went to bed. :noon
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
No heat on here until November. At least I hope. Highs in the 70's here.
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
No heat until it gets to 64 in the house. It was only 65!!
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
:lr
My father in law won't turn on the AC until it's 100 outside!!! He also likes to fish while wearing long jeans and drinks coffee only while fishing....the man is insane. |
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
I have a fickle-therm family. The thermo is set 71H and 74AC. The heat came on Saturday night and the AC back on after church. That's right, I've got money to spend...
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Scott, where I'm from at 44 degrees we still wear shorts golfing!
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
With our thermostat the heat is on or the AC is on, Jamie. Otherwise it'd be battling it out most days because the house gets hot in the evening. It faces almost due west and there's nothing blocking the sun at all.
I'm fortunate that Lisa and I are on the same page temperature-wise (much like everything else). At first, she liked it colder in the winter because she was used to it. Once I showed her the joys of NOT freezing your ass off all winter, she's jumped right on board. We have a gas fireplace in the living room and she turns it on even more often than I do. Nothing beats sitting in front of an instant fire when we get chilled. We use it constantly, we call it the "microwave fireplace". :D |

Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
I actually can't wait to get the energy bill for September. Haven't had the A/C on since this first week. The heat probably won't go on until it's in the 50s outside during the day.

We open the window during the day and close them before it cools off too much in the evening. The chill is hard to get rid of once it's in the house. But it's upper 70's today. My A/C was working it's butt off this summer and my bill has the numbers to prove it! Glad to have this time where there is no A/C or propane being used. |

I only ran the A/C a little this weekend and I opened windows last night. Today's high is supposed to be 73! A nice break! I probably won't use the heater for another few weeks... Sorry Scott!:( |
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Well the other night it got down to 30* but tonight is showing 43 for a low.
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Cleaned out the pellet stove and swept the chimneys. I'm hoping to not use the stoves until later this month (like last year) but you never know. It is supposed to be back in the 70's this coming weekend. :)

Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
My fiance hates me. I run warm/hot, and I love sleeping in the cold. It's been high 40's to low 50's around Chicagoland, and I sleep with the windows open with nothing but a bedsheet. I get too warm with a blanket, though there have been times where I woke up wanting one.
We typically go till November before I turn the heat on. Everyone remember to inspect your furnace before you fire that thing up! It can be dangerous if it's clogged or faulty! |
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Hi yesterday was 84, low this morning 65. I have all the windows open in the house. Wish I was this all year around.
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Yep, time to start getting firewood. In fact, that's what the wife has planned for me to do this weekend. It's been two years since I used the furnace or the A/C. Mild summers and winters.

Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Though it's been cloudy and cool here in Noith Joisey for days, I haven't needed heat. One of the advantages living on the top floor in an apartment means I get the warmth from below coming up to me.
Of course, I get that too in August. :r |
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
H62 L53 Today. Loving this weather, this year we do not have oil heat so we may set the heat above 65f. We kept it there or below last year and its not that bad, other than sitting on the pot in the AM! As far as smoking this winter I had to call it off around Jan, the shed I had was just to big to heat, this year I have a smaller rubbermaid shed that has many air pockets in it that I hope will help insulate:tu

Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
It was in the 30s and 40s last week (Detroit), but back in the 60s and 70s this week. I think it was in the 50s here in the house last week, but it'll probably be another month before I fire up the boiler!
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
I don't even want to upset you!!!
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Here's a question. Do your heat bills in the winter equate to our AC bills in the summer?
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
I try not to think about my heat bills in the winter. I do like it comfortable, and the thermostat is around 68-72 most of the winter, once I finally get the thing going. My first year in this house (about 8 years ago) I nearly fell on the floor after my first Dec-Jan bill - egads!!! I'm on the "budget plan" now, paying 200x my actual July usage in July to balance out the solstice deep-freeze. :)

Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
We went from the heat being on to all the windows are open. It's about 53 out there tonight, and that's perfect for keeping the bedroom windows open all night. It's gonna be super cozy Tonight. :tu

Lots of politics are wrapped around energy usage, and I have to imagine the goal is for everyone to assume as equal a burden as possible. Of course there's ways to beat the game, if you can stand the summer heat or cut your own wood in the winter, or work extra hard to make things as inexpensive as possible, but I think all us average thermostat twisters ultimately pay close to the same, by ratio, year to year. |
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
I've seen the difference insulation and good windows makes. From a leaky old cabin I lived in where the fire had to be roaring all the time to the more modern house I'm in now where I burn less wood than that one room cabin. Insulate and seal, the more the better. Save in the summer and the winter.

Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
86 here today, kinda makes it hard to sleep during the day when it's that warm! I love it, except I didn't have time to sit on the deck and enjoy a stick like I wanted. That makes Jeffy an unhappy boy! :r

Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
We finally cracked and turned the heat on this morning. I looked up this thread to see when we turned it on last year, we made it a week longer this year.
We turned on the gas fireplace last week just to break the chill in the evening, so it's really almost to the day. How are you guys doing? |
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
We've had the heat on for a couple weeks, on and off. My wife has a built in thermostat. If she ain't comfortable, I'm not gonna be able to get comfortable, if you catch my drift. :)
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Had to finally turn mine on Friday when my wife was sick. I freaking hate turning on the heat. But with wife and 3 kids, I kinda had no choice.
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Turned it on yesterday. 64 was just a tad too chilly in the house.
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
We still have our AC on. :D
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
No heat for me!
Truth be told I had my AC on until Saturday night. I'm willing to bet my wife puts it on while I'm at work tomorrow. She'll likely turn it off before I get home though, then lie that she didn't turn it on! |
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Stocking up on firewood right now. Looks like another cold winter in store. I guess all that carbon emission limiting stuff is working already.
|
Re: The Heat Is Officially On For Good.
Wifey turned on the heat on Thursday I think, upstairs gets HOT! I hate having an upstairs, next house will be single level.
|
