Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?

(lets hope it's the first of 3 more......) |
Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
One hot day doesn't make a summer :)

Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
Did they finally win one?
|
Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
I wish the Rangers would tank now, so the Tigers could get the Red Sox. ;)

Tho really, pretty sure the Rays could take out the yankees in the division playoff, so an enemy of my enemy is a friend, right? :r |
Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
I'm pretty sure my nephew's little league team could take out the Red Sox at the present time.

You'd best hope the Yankees continue to keep you in the race over the next few days, as you try to back into October. :r I actually loved that Rod Sux victory last night. The game meant nothing to the Yankees, and not only did they field a minor-league squad to begin with, they declined numerous chances to win in extra innings by keeping veterans on the bench, leaving the game in the hands of the kids. Meanwhile Boston HAD to win to retain its slim one-game lead for the wild-card, and were forced to burn up their bullpen before heading down to three MORE must-wins in Baltimore . . . after the Os' already spanked them around up in Fenway. |
Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
At least they have a SHOT to make the playoffs..my Mets have been out of the race since June. :D

Too true. Sadly, tonight pretty much played out as expected. Rays spanked the Yankees, cause honestly, the Yankees would be IDIOTS to get a veteran injured in a meaningless game right before the playoffs... and the Rays have every reason some go in with all guns blazing. Meanwhile the Red Sox... well... was kinda hoping they'd build on Sunday night's win, but clearly that's not happening :tg |

Francis, it is so refreshing to see an honest and logical, albeit painful, posting from a Boston fan instead of the normal "Yankees SUCK!!" rant we are more accustomed to. Kudos. :tu |

Don't get me wrong, the Yankees are still the sworn enemy... but I've got no trouble saying the Red Sox are playing like little leaguers either ;) Speaking of which... a spark of hope remains! they actually managed to (barely) win tonight! So the games are still tied and it all comes down to tomorrow and maybe Thursday. Not sure we'll be able to rely on Papelbon tomorrow... but I also read that the Yankees will be fielding more of their starting lineup tomorrow against the Rays... so both clubs have some handicaps to overcome.... Really the ideal scenario is that the Yankees beat the Rays and it ends there.... because if it goes to Rays vs. Red Sox on Thursday, I have a feeling we're going to get spanked. |
Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
Even if we don't get spanked by the Rays in a playoff, you know Beckett will be starting that game. Lester is going tonight on short rest, so that leaves us with what, Lackey starting game 1 against the rangers? There's a recipe for success... :td

Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
I don't really have a rooting interest in the RSox, but I am crossing my fingers for a play in game.... There are many beautiful things about the Fall, one is playoff baseball. There would be no better way to start this time of year, than 1 or even 2 play in games....

Best thing that could happen is we win, rays lose, and skip the tie breaker. then Becket starts against the rangers and we have a faint wispy chance at building some momentum. but of course, ray's losing is still unlikely... Yankes may field a better bench this time, but its certain they'll still be fielding the lowest grade they've got in their bullpen to give the starters plenty of time to rest before the playoffs. |
Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
Though I'd consider it nonsense were it to crop up, I am glad I've not seen complaints that the Yankees are deliberately tanking it against the Rays. If anyone holds that opinion, yet have refrained from voicing it, just take note of last night's loss.
Do you truly believe that Girardi told Martin to hit into a triple play? Do you think he instructed Tex to pull a bonehead base-running gaffe, failing to score from second on a double? And with things set up with the Yankees formula for success all year, holding a lead in the seventh and looking forward to Robertson and Mo slamming the door, do you imagine that Joe gave Martin the signal from the dugout to flash Soriano the sign for a meatball to blow the hold and yield up the game-winning 3-run homer? Please. Think what you will of the New York Yankees, admit that they are not only professional, but that they know enough to avoid tempting those Baseball Gods who have been so good to them in the past. |
Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
nah, no way the Yankees are deliberately tanking against the Rays. Those boys are professional athletes. First and foremost, they're there to play a game.
Of course part of that "game" includes winning a championship, which is a lot easier to do when you're players aren't injured... so you can be damned sure they're going to be playing more cautious baseball than the Rays - no Jeter-flying-into-the-stands in these games, nothing that would be such an obvious risk of injury. Of course folks get injured all the time playing regular baseball. Veritek got whacked in the knee a few nights ago by an errant pitch and was out for a few games (not sure if he played tonight). He wasn't taking any risks, but sometimes sh*t happens. Nevertheless its certain the Yankees are doing everything they can to mitigate the amount of sh*t that can happen to them in these last few games. I don't consider that deliberately tanking the game. I consider that playing good strategic baseball, plain and simple. YES, it gives the Rays a little more of a chance then they would normally have if they were in the playoffs and it was do-or-die for the Yankees - then you'd see Jeter diving into the stands to win the game at all costs. BUT that's most certainly not deliberately playing badly. I'm quite certain every player out there is playing his absolute best to win AND still be healthy to step back onto the field in the next game. |
Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
Rays tied in the bottom of the 11th, Red Sox are clinging to a 1 run lead going into the top of the 9th.... should be interesting....
|
Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
And the Red Sox lost in the bottom of the 9th. :r

Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
One thing you have to admit . . . last night was the most exciting, entertaining, and fun ending to a regular-season in baseball, ever. It's like Bobby Thompson hit a home run to win the pennant three different times, in three different games, in three different cities.
We will remember this September for a loooooooooong time. |
Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
The Sox are a great club, as are the Braves, but it's nice to see a couple clubs who aren't sinking like a rock going into the playoffs. If your team is that systemically puked up, there's no way you're gonna pull it togther to make an entertaining stand in the playoffs.
I'm excited about this year's playoff lineup, and thrilled that the Buccos extended their sub .500 streak to what, 64 years? :r Ahh, only 19 years. I had to go check. I've just grown accustomed to them losing. |
Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
Odd you should mention the Pirates, Scott. For reasons I will never understand, my father was a Pirate fan, though how a peckerwood from the sticks of Hickory NC became one is a mystery. He was on his deathbed when Bill Mazeroski hit that homer in Game 7 against the Yankees, so at least he got that before the end.

Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
I think I'll take up the Rays for the post season.
and yes, that was most certainly a september to remember for braves and red sox fans... |

Red Sox put on the emergency flashers and drove in the granny lane for a month, so I've got no hard feelings for the Rays shooting past, and wish em the best in sending the Yankees home for vacation a few days early :ss |
Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
Francis, you are the oddest Red Sox fan I've ever encountered, in a good way. Boston is notorious for being single-minded in its sports fandom; if their team is not in it, they don't care. A national game that will draw a 10-share in New York, Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Seattle will pull in a 3 up there. Only Southern Cal rivals them in this, and that's more because people in LA don't give a crap about any of it.
Which was my point regarding the Rays. Both Michael Kay and John Sterling, the TV and radio voices of the Yankees, noted that the only BAD thing about that last night of baseball was the fact that only 28,000 fans showed up in Tampa to watch their team fight for the playoffs. They called it a disgrace, and went so far as to avow the town does not deserve a team at all. Say what you will, Fenway is packed every game. |
Re: The Red Sox, the Hindenburg, a boat anchor?
It's the pink hats that don't know jack **** about baseball that fill Fenway, they only go to drink,do the wave and sing Sweet Caroline.
