This Is Expensive!

In the year that I've been smoking cigars I've spent ~$6300.00 on 50 boxes, which averages to $125.00/box. This is troubling. I smoke a value cigar and one to two premium cigars daily, and although I smoke Padron Anniversaries, I do so sporadically, which is to say that my average smoke costs $6-$8.00. Usually I spend ~$150.00 a box at two discount e-tailers; if they don't stock it I don't buy it.

Add in $700.00 on three humidors, beads, cutter and punch and I'm at $7000.00.

Don't misunderstand me, I really do love cigars, but that's a lot of money. As I have 50 pipes and about 20 lbs of pipe tobacco, I can have a bowl for about 75¢. I've financed cigars this past year by selling pipe tobacco; I had about 200 lbs.

I didn't pause to think about it until now; I've been too busy enjoying myself.

How have you coped with this expense?

I cope by not keeping track of what I spend on cigars. :r:r:r

Is this your first year really getting into cigars? Few years back I spent similar money. Midnight Madness on JR's or endless hours on Cbid. I was there late at night trying to get that special everyone is sleeping through. Then I would simply buy when everyone is up anyway so it made no difference. I wasn't bargain hunting. I was hunting to fill two 55 qt coolers and three desktops.

I was cutting 8-12 sticks a weekend. Especially in football season.

It'll wane. You won't be having three a day in a few months. Before you knwo it that investment will start to age which isn't a bad thing.

Now if you been smoking for a few years your in trouble. Cigars are an expensive hobby/habit to maintain. As you already know a pipe is much easier to afford.

I try not to think about it. I buy one box a month weather it is $100 or $300 it don't matter it usually averages out to about $2000 per year.

I have no idea what I've spent on cigars this year and that is definitely a good thing. As long as the mortgage gets paid and I can still retire before I'm 80 I'd rather not know much I spend on cigars.

6,300.00 in 12 months? Bro, a lot of us adults like to practice a little thing we like to call "Self Control"! :r
Seriously, if ya have the disposable income to buy that many cigars, why worry about it. On the other hand, if you're over spending, stop it.

:tpd: My budget doesn't allow me to buy a lot of cigars, so I don't. I save up when there's a box I want to buy, and I put away a few bucks a week when I can so I can buy a few singles at the B&M when I herf, or stop in to have a smoke in the A/C

200 pounds of pipe tobacco?

Sounds like you have had a problem LONG before cigars came into play.......

I never counted how much $$$ I spend on cigars or booze, I already know the amount....

Almost all of it :D

Cigars are a cheap hobby. One of these competition aerobatics models is equivalent in price to your entire collection, and you're only one mistake or broken part missed during a preflight check away from loosing the whole thing. Travel costs to district competitions are a large factor as well.

We have experienced financial difficulties as of late. Health insurance has skyrocketed, gas of course is expensive along wih no wage increase at my job in 4 years. My wife's work has gotten scarce as well. This results in a moratorium on cigars, so to speak. I don't need them and can do without them. I've cut way back on purchases and what few I have bought lately have been economy smokes. I've also cut back on my weekly smokes since bills come first. So, I know exactly what you mean.

If you recognize it as a problem, then it probably is. But if you have the money, go for it.

I refuse to think about how much I've spent. As someone else stated, you cant put a price on relaxation.

Besides, I'm also a fisherman with a boat...(3 actually)

I agree. It is an expensive ride. I am kinda of thinking of quitting. The wife and I are going to have a kid on the way soon. Cigars are an expense that is easy to drop. I have about 45 cigars left. Once they are gone, I am done. I only smoke 1-2 per week, so they should last a while. The good news is that it is all really good stuff left.

You think that hobby's bad, try getting wrapped up in this on a regular basis. Lots of coin there ...

As others have said, now that you've accumulated some stock, your buying will likely wane. As an added benefit, it can sit and mature before you get to all of it, improving with age. WINNING!-(P

I completely agree, cigars give you a chance to step away from your everyday life and enjoy a few minutes of peace. You can't put a price on that!

Re: This Is Expensive!

I have a problem with hoard....er.....collecting. I tend to jump around from one thing to another.

I got my 2 credit cards paid off, and I already designated one for guns, and one for cigars. SWMBO and pays the bills put the kaibash on that VERY quickly. She doesn't mind a few at a time.

If I came home with a cooler (which were on sale at Wally World this past weekend, btw), a box or three, and an oasis, we'd all be in the spare bedroom. For good.

So this is one hobby I have to keep under control.

Re: This Is Expensive!

I didn't find that the expense required any coping. It hasn't required any psychological therapy or support groups, either. Every dime I put into this hobby is enjoyable, and if time comes it's not, I'll stop spending on it.
Your words imply you've created a negative issue for yourself. You can't unspend the money, so if it's bothersome, don't spend so much. Maybe enjoy your pipe more?
