Re: Fire at Fuente

I saw that last night. Pretty devastating to lose that much rare tobacco. I wonder how this will affect their production and special projects.

irratebass 08-26-2011 11:23 AM

Re: Fire at Fuente

That's a shame! I wonder if this will hurt their supply and these will become scarce cigars for awhile. Glad no one was hurt though.

Curing barns exploding and tobacco warehouses burning is, unfortunately, just part of the business.

shilala 08-26-2011 11:46 AM

Re: Fire at Fuente

I assumed what Adam said. When you're fermenting, you're gonna have fires. Not cleaning poop out of the barn well enough will start a real nice fire from fermenting poop. I imagine not turning bales and not keeping super clean is a good way to burn down a curing barn, as well.

Cigars come and go, people do not. I am relieved that only tobacco was lost to the fire.

Glad to see no one was hurt, but ouch, thats gotta hurt financially. Hopefully business isn't too disrupted for them.

Re: Fire at Fuente

If I remember correctly, Fuente's landed in Dominican because their mainland business went up in smoke?

Adriftpanda 08-26-2011 04:34 PM

Re: Fire at Fuente

That's really unfortunate. Fuente smokers, you guys better stock up.

He blends a lot of JC Newman stuff, like Diamond Crown, Cuesta Rey, etc.

I thought Brickhouse and El Baton were JC Newman blended, though its not surprising if Fuente does all their blends.

El Baton and Brick House are not made by Fuente. They are manufactured in Nicaragua by Tabacos San Rafael and utilize only Nicaraguan tobacco.

Glad no one was hurt! Gotta suck for Fuente, but no matter, the workers are more important than the tobacco.

Re: Fire at Fuente

Man, the Fuentes must've pissed off the fire-gods in a previous life. They have they worst history with these facility fires. :(

Damn, I'm heading to a Fuente event tonight. Sucks that it happened, but very good that no one was injured.

What a loss, bet you could have smelled those rare leaves several miles away.

Re: Fire at Fuente

As you may know, G.L. Pease is a world-class American pipe tobacco blender; he, as well as another prolific blender, Craig Tarler, had bought a container? of rare and outstanding Syrian Latakia. The building that housed it burnt down and destroyed all of the tobacco. This was ~2005, and no Syrian Latakia of any quality has been available since. Although both Cyprian Latakia, which is still available, and Syrian, have a common taste, Syrian is highly-prized for its complexity. Syrian has become unavailable because the Syrian government halted its production as the wood necessary to smoke it was depleting Syria's forests.
