Lighter Help

Hello there,

As I am new to the world of cigars and the CA I am full of questions, and little knowledge. Well about cigars that is. Anyway, I was lookin for a recomendation as to a good lighter that won't break the bank, or just some suggestions as to what people are using, like don't like etc. Thanks for any info.

Ronson Jetlite, should be able to get it at Wally World for less than 5 bucks. Solid lighter.

Re: Lighter Help

For a cheap lighter try to get a hold of a ronson jet light. Check out walmart, cvs or walgreens.

Also check out cigar monster and you can snag a xikar for around 15-20 bucks.

Re: Lighter Help

As mentioned by the previous posters, the Ronson Jetlite isn't a bad lighter for $3-$4, although it doesn't hold a lot of fuel.

I would recommend the DealExtreme lighters:
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/jet-130...lear-tank-1455
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/compact...t-lighter-4179

With the BULKRATE code and a purchase of more than three units, you can get them for about $2.00 each.

Or get a Bic. Seriously.

PS: If you search around, you'll find that this has been covered a number of times before, and if you if you take a look at those threads, you'll find some good discussion on which lighters are the best bang for the buck, and out of that, you might find just what you are looking for.

:tpd: I've used them all. Currently have a few Ronson's and a couple of double and triple flames. Ronson's dont hold enough fuel, you'll be filling it weekly. By far the Deal Extreme units have been the best bang for the $2. I've used or given away well over 100 pieces. The nice thing is if they break, you just toss it and grab another. :tu

Get a disposable bic. I've had nothing but grief from every last one of my expensive lighters.

Re: Lighter Help

Ronson is good for cheap lighters. Atol at the mid-high price point and Dunhill, Davidoff, ST Dupont on the high end.

Bic does the job too.

Re: Lighter Help

I picked up one of the Brown Leather Ave Maria branded LOTUS Laser torches (same as the black leather CI branded one mentioned above) on Cigar Bid to fill out an order. So far I'm not overly impressed. The max flame height is about that of an unregulated (i.e. brass restrictor shim removed) Ronson Jetlite, but it mis-fires about 25% of the time. With the flame adjusted all the way up, it often fires w/ butane from only about 3/4 of the circumference the nozzle. To get a consistent flame I have to back off to about 85% of max on the dial.

In terms of build quality, the leather inlay is nice but the metal portions are clear-coated (likely mild steel) and not bare brushed stainless as they appear in the picture. Also, the single-action cover has a bit of play and doesn't align 100% flush. I have a feeling LOTUS makes this model only for OEM branding and it wouldn't be up to snuff as part of their regular line. For the $10 I paid (often available on CB for only $7) it's not the worst money I've ever spent, but I wouldn't pay $13-$16 shipped, and surely not $25-$30 from CI, for this lighter on its own.

I'll probably carry this lighter for special occaisons until I get something better (have my eye on the Xicar Element), but I'll probably stick with modded Ronson Jetlites for every-day use.

Just ordered 10 of those Deal Extreme c-1300's. I've been using a slimline jet that I got for 12 bucks on buylighters.com. It lights about 1 and 1/2 cigars before needing a refill. It cracked along the seam a week ago and last night it all but exploded...

I'm excited to get these new ones! When I feel comfortable, I'll get a nice Xicar...

You need to be patient when ordering from DE. It may take up to 6 weeks for the order to arrive, I have used these daily for the past 4 years. :2

I'll withdraw my previous statement about being unsatisfied with the branded Lotus Laser... at least in terms of reliability. I did my first few fills with Ronson fuel because I had some on hand and thought it wouldn't have much effect unless I kept using it long term. Today I was in a low-end tobacco shop (90% cigarettes, pipe, and smokeless) and they had an inexpensive 5x filtered fuel brand called FasFil for $4 for a 300ml can. I picked a can up along with a Villager Sumatra for after lunch.

I purged the Lotus, refilled with the new fuel, purged again (to flush out any remaining Ronson residue), refilled again, blasted some in the nozle (to dislodge any gunk/residue there), ate lunch (giving time to let the fuel/nozle warm), and now the Lotus lights 100% reliably with a fully formed flame, no sputter, and even seems to burn a little hotter. Now my only real complaints are the excess play in the single-action cover and the clear-coated mild steel instead of true brushed stainless.
