Would you guys keep on the lookout for Short Story Maduros?

I saw they should be sitting around shortly, if not already. I was always a big fan of Fuente's Hemingway Short Story's, but they got entirely too mild for me as I hogged up my goat-like palette along the way.
I've been smoking less and further apart and I'm enjoying a lot of milder sticks again. I think I'd really enjoy these. I'd like to lay up a couple boxes if at all possible, and I expect them to be sitting at B&M's more than at the big online places.
Let me know if you run into them, will you please?

I'm headed in shortly, James has a good Fuente selection and will send them out. I'll see if he has them and give you his number if he does.

Contact Ol' Times found here on CA in the retailer section. They have been selling Fuente before Fuente was cool. They should be able to help you out. And they are a great local B&M here in Central FL.

These are coming out? I know there are a few from eons ago, but if there is going to be a regular release then I'll need to stash some cash.

Yes, they're ready to go, from my understanding.
They did come out in 2005 for a benefit, I think they made 250 of them. Guys have paid $150 for a single from that time.

Are all short storys the same or are these called Hemingway short storys?

shilala 07-23-2011 03:34 PM

Re: Would you guys keep on the lookout for Short Story Maduros?

Short Story's are all Hemingways, these are actually Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story Maduros. The regular or natural short storys have a cameroon wrapper over a dominican filler and binder. Any of the Hemingways are tougher to find in a maduro wrapper.

The B&M has A. Fuente short story but they don't say Hemingway on the box.

I never paid attention to the box, that's a good catch. I'd think it'd be on the inside lid. I'd go downstairs and look if I weren't so lazy.
Hemingway is the name of the blend, actually, if that helps. No idea why the box wouldn't be marked up. Probably because it's the only cigar they make called "short story". That blend has cool names for all the sizes.

I just looked at my daughter's "bug collection box" and it doesn't say "Hemingway" on or inside of it.

Until you guys mentioned it, I had never noticed that the Short Story boxes don't say "Hemingway" on them, unlike most of (all?) the rest of the boxes in the line.

To my knowledge the Short Story boxes do not say Hemmingway on them, only "Short Story" under the clasp.
The other boxes either have it imprinted on the top or inside or both.

Interesting....

http://www.cigarinspector.com/arturo...t-story-maduro

Quote:

The Arturo Fuente Short Story Maduro is not your typical cigar. Originally, only 200 cigars were given out at the 1999 and 2002 Cigar Family Celebrations combined. Surprisingly, the Short Story Maduro was shown at the 2011 International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailers Convention (IPCPR) earlier this month. Keeping with tradition, Arturo Fuente is only releasing 1,000 boxes of the cigar to select retailers that purchased twenty or more boxes of Arturo Fuente cigars at the trade show.

You're not wrong Kelly, Father's Day and December Holiday season (ie: late November) was still the case as of last year for most of the HTF stuff.

Ditto.
Did they do the Anejo's and Opus at different times, Adam, or were they at Father's Day and before Christmas as well?
Seems they added some extra dates this past year because Opus and Anejo are pretty well stocked everywhere?

Yeah you have seen that too Scott. I can walk into my B&M any day now and grab an Anejo or an Opus. I used to have to wait for Fathers day or the holidays or a rare out of the blue shipment. I dont know if Fuente started making more or what. Still no luck with the SSM for you but I have told my local cigar shop I am looking for a couple of boxes if he can get them. He does a lot of Fuente traffic so he should be able to get a few.

I think traditionally, at least the way I remember it (ehhh), it was Anejos for Fathers Day and Opus Xs & BTLs for the December holidays, although it seemed like there were two regular Opus releases last year and IIRC, Mark (Norcal_Mark) was saying that he got in more boxes each time. Plus, there were all the sungrowns too, which stretched the boxes out further since people were buying those up

In the last few years, Fuente has been churning out the HTFs like mad. 858 SG rosado, 858SG, Hemi SG, Hemi SG rosado, Untold story maduros (when was the last time they made those monsters?). They even did Opus Sharks outside of the Opus-22 set last year...

Based on the larger quantity available, plus the other cigars, it sure seems like they upped production.

It sure is a diversion from their "protect the mystique" philosophy. It hasn't been long since I'd grab every Opus I could find for the guys here. (I no like.) Now they're everywhere, even online. I never saw one of those 3 cigar tins till this year, I bought up a whole rack, then played hell getting rid of them. I'm still stuck with 3 tins. They'll make nice gifts, I suppose. :)
There must be a new captain at the helm with some different ideas?

Thanks, Mike. :D
Still no luck here, either, but a bunch of the brothers are keeping an eye out for me, and have offered me a taste of theirs, so I'll be good no matter what. I was hoping to gather up as many as I can get so everyone here can get in on them if they want to. I've got plenty of time to split boxes and ship and stuff, so it'd be nice to put it to good use. :tu

I dunno. I have no idea how the decision power is divided between Carlos and Carlito.

There is a bit of resurgence in cigars going on, in my talks with a number of manufacturers & makers, they all seem to believe that we're heading into an expansion, almost a mini-boom, but without a repeat of a lot of the garbage (caused in part by crop shortages) from the early 90's.

Besides that, I see a few other possibilities such as the upswing in HTF & LE interest and sales over the last few years so maybe they upped production, good crops 3-5 years ago so there is more tobacco for them to use and I believe that Fuente has been expanding their capacity over the last few years (actually, I can't think of many manufacturers who haven't expanded in the last few years) because they seemed to be having a hard time meeting demands, but were still adding new accounts, now, all of a sudden, all the accounts seem to be getting more cigars. And, lastly, maybe with all the other NC HTFs out there top chose from, could Fuente product be moving a bit slower in any one location, yet better across the board due to increased availability. Couple that with more product in the distribution and you have a recipe for stuff being easy to find.

Probably a combination of many things.

Re: Would you guys keep on the lookout for Short Story Maduros?

Just got an email back from Tampa Sweethearts with their HTF/LE list, but they said they won't be getting any of the SS maduros in :(

Brutus2600 08-04-2011 11:47 AM

Re: Would you guys keep on the lookout for Short Story Maduros?

Just called a local B&M who usually carries a bunch of Fuente stuff and one of the few local retailers who have an OpusX account to ask about the SS maduro. He spouted off some stuff about that "only being a Christmas release but we have the WOAM's in stock, we're the only people who have those in and you should really try those" (so he obviously hasn't heard of them and it being an IPCPR release)

That's great, but do you have any of the Short Story Maduros?

"Oh, well no we don't have any of those in but if you want we have full boxes of the WOAM's and you're not going to find these anywhere else."

:sl

Have I mentioned I stopped going to this B&M a while back because it's run and owned by a real asshat? I was going to break my boycott of them for the SSM's, but since they don't have them I don't have to :noon :r

Re: Would you guys keep on the lookout for Short Story Maduros?

Yeah...this guy either a) seems to not know anything or b) was just lying to my face so I'd buy cigars at his store.

I'm going to lean towards a) with a dash of b) considering he didn't even know about the SSM's release in line with IPCPR. Even after I told him that and that it wasn't Christmas he was still trying to sell me the WOAM.

I was grinding on it, and came up with what you said up there. It's hard to believe that they didn't push up production because the proliferation and availablity was almost instant.
I agree that the onslaught of htf/le's is probably cutting into their act, as well. Add poor timing into the increased production, htf/le's, and slogging economy, and that'd leave lots of opii and anejo on the shelves.
Then when they're always available, they're no longer special and the artificial shortage of supply/mystique model goes to hell. That's going to be tough to rebuild, if it can be. It's a shame.

Brutus2600 08-04-2011 12:36 PM

Re: Would you guys keep on the lookout for Short Story Maduros?

Honestly I think that Fuente's top shelf and limited production cigars being more easily available would help their sales. OpusX, Anejos, seasonal maduros...all their higher end stuff doesn't suffer from image, it suffers from availability. If there are more available (as long as quality remains the same) the opinion of the cigars isn't going to change as to how good they are. However, the fact that people can get them at normal prices (and not inflated super-rare prices) will be a benefit I think.

Just look at what happened with the Tatuaje T110's and the Fausto line. Pete didn't take away from the T110's rare/LE status by producing more, but instead using the same blend created a new line with different sizes. Everybody who went apesh*t over the T110's were ecstatic to learn that they would be able to get regularly produced cigars of that blend.

IMO, if regularly produced high end Fuente smokes were readily available, I'd be happy about it. But that's just my opinion :D

I agree that it'd be great if their high end limited stuff was more readily available. I have definitely been an Opus whore in the past, but when the taxes went WAY up here in MN, I had to go to other sticks, though I still love a #4 or PL when I can find them. However, that's not my point....

One of the reasons those sticks (Opus especially) is (if I remember correctly) that the tobacco used in them is grown in a small, limited area of the farm. The is why the limited quantities. It allows them to keep as much consistency in the tobacco as possible. Obviously, there will be some variance year to year in the characteristics of the tobacco, and the sheer amount that they harvest, which can affect the availability of the cigars after they're rolled.

In reality, though, the only ones who truly know are the Fuentes. All the rest of us can do is pull theories out of our collective @$$es. LOL

Thanks for the link, I'll be watching the B&M for these.

Here's the deal...

Fuente released the Short Story Maduro this year, much like last year's 858 Sun Grown release.

Retailers were given an opportunity to purchase one box of Short Story Maduros, if they bought then boxes of "regular" Fuente product. (Last year, one box of 858 Sun Growns for 20 boxes of "regular" product.) To be clear, it's not buy ten boxes get one free, it was buy ten boxes, have the opportunity to buy one box. The reason Fuente does this is to make it fair for everyone to get some, regardless of your standing, Opus account, etc.

There were 1,200 boxes. I've seen the number of 1,000, honestly have no clue where it came from. Everyone I talked to before, during and after the show said 1,200.

As to why Tampa Sweetheart's didn't get any... Despite a Fuente relative owning TS, Fuente, like last year, told them that in this instance they are treated like any other shop, i.e. they need to buy their ten boxes. Last year the rumor was that they didn't partake in the 858 Sun Grown game partially out of protest, but who knows. Like I said... that's a rumor.

Some shops got more than others, but many that have had them have sold out. These have been released and if you are trying to figure when your local will be getting them in, you need to talk to someone who knows when the next Fuente order is supposed to be in, as they are just shipping with retailer's next order.

As for the OR Short Story Maduros... Those came from CFCF 2000, less than 100 believed to be given out.

Tobacco Locker might have a box left, but they could already be sold out, and they haven't even gotten them in yet. Atlantic, Tobacco Grove, Tower Cigars, Buckhead, Tobacco World, 2 Guys — all worth trying. I know Smoke Inn sold out and I presume Holt's is probably going to be impossible to get in.

Exactly. All a guy can do is ask around and hope to get one the waiting list, or keep a close eye as to when your shop's orders are going out.
1200 boxes doesn't sound like much, but honestly it's enough that we should all get a taste. Finding a stack of them is highly unlikely, but stumbling onto a box or half a box is a good chance.
I'm just trying to be patient. :D
