Burger toppings
Today I did a taste tasting for a new burger place opening here in Des Moines. One of the burgers I had was called Undead Elvis and it was topped with peanut butter and fried bananas. It was awesome and I can't wait for the place to open so I can have it again.
It also got me thinking. What do you top your burger with? I like mine with cheese, miracle whip, ketchup and a fried egg. What is your perfect burger? |
Re: Burger toppings
Cheddar, sauteed mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, mayo and ketchup are my standard toppings. Every now and then I branch out with a gormet burger at a restaurant, i.e. gouda and other fancy stuff, and I'm always disappointed. I guess I'm a simpleton.

Re: Burger toppings
Gotta go with sauteed onions, pepperjack cheese, bacon, and jalapeno peppers. Would be curious to try that peanut butter and fried bananas one...

Re: Burger toppings
Son you got some odd tastes, there. Can't say for sure since I never tried it, but that doesn't sound appetizing.
But then I read that you like yours with cheese, miracle whip, ketchup and a fried egg. Now I get it, lol. I tend towards minimalism in most things like that. I don't keep lettuce around cause it wilts before I use it. I don't keep tomatoes around because I RACE THROUGH the produce section to get to the food. I have ketchup and mayo in the fridge, so I take a slice of bread, ketchup and mayo and that's my burger. Sometimes I will melt some cheese on it, or slice an onion. See, onions I can use to MAKE food, so I keep them around regularly enough. When I grew up, there was no such thing as a hamburger bun as far as my family knew. We saw them at other people's house, but for us it was two slices of Evangeline Maid Bread and a patty. Now being as I am an excellent chef where fire and smoke are concerned, my burgers are still excellent even from the shameful lack of excess in the finished product. But I wouldn't want to put my burger up against people with a full fridge. |
Re: Burger toppings

Re: Burger toppings
Onions, tomato, lettuce, bacon or sauteed onions, mushrooms, bacon and something with a kick.
|
Re: Burger toppings
We have a new local place that has a peanut butter, fried banana, and bacon burger. I'm trying that one next. I had to get the surf and turf first with 4 oz crab meat and Bearnaise sauce. :)
My favorite burgers tend to be simple. American cheese, bacon, and lots of pickles. |
Re: Burger toppings
lettuce, sauteed onions, blue cheese, bacon, and jalapeno peppers
|
Re: Burger toppings
Sauteed mushrooms, Swiss, American, a dash of mayo, and avocado on an onion bun.
|
Re: Burger toppings
Mmmm I love swiss cheese, two years at least! Imported!
|
Re: Burger toppings
Swiss, sautéed mushrooms and onions. That or mayo, ketchup, mustard, onions, tomato and lettuce.
Lisa and I have been trying lots of different "gourmet burgers" when we're out. Last night we rode the motorcycles to Whitey's near Brecksville, OH. She got the mushroom burger, I got a bleu cheese baco-burger. It reinforced to me that I don't like bleu cheese on a hamburger, as much as I want to. Odd, cause I love bleu cheese. I don't like bacon on my hamburger, either. Also odd. |

I'm also partial to a fried egg (just the egg, not on the bluecheese/bacon burger.) But that goes back to my drunken college days, so it's a reminiscent taste for me. |

When I was younger the only thing I could put on my burger was ketchup. As I have gotten older my tastes have changed and I tend to like more things. I still can't stand tomato though! |

Re: Burger toppings
There is a place in New Haven that claims to have invented the hamburger. They flame broil it in Cast Iron gas stoves. They put it between two slices of bread because back in the day they didn't have buns. They also don't allow ketchup, mayo or mustard as they feel that takes away from the meat.
I hope to eat there someday! |

I prefer mine Carolina style, of course. Mustard, slaw & onions. And I don't like buns. I like thick sliced white bread because it holds all the condiments in while buns let them drip out. |

My brother recently started dating a girl named lillian, so I busted out the movie while they were over for dinner, and played this bit for her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vtz_zlHW6IM |
Re: Burger toppings
Yeah, but Greg, bread DOES let the condiments drip THROUGH, lol.
He's right, don't get me started. I never say in ten words what I can say in 1000. It was mostly just a setup for my joke about racing through the produce section to get to the FOOD....that's a joke. |

I'm tempted to try that one also next time! |

Re: Burger toppings
If you have quality meat, then you really don't need much more on the burger.
|
Re: Burger toppings
One of my favorite toppings on a burger is Pimento Cheese, especially Palmetto Pimento Cheese
I also like Bacon And third but definitely not least I like a cheese burger with chili and slaw on top, bonus if you put Pimento cheese instead of sliced cheese and double bonus if you add bacon :) And no harm if you add mayo as well |
Re: Burger toppings
I will say I've had a sunny side up egg on a burger at Three Floyds. It was really good. But their burger is brilliance to begin with. I see they have sweet breads on the menu now, a trip is in store soon.

Re: Burger toppings
Favorite burger in my area is the "The Old Fashioned House Burger" (from their website) grilled over a live fire and topped with fried onions, Bavaria's hickory-smoked bacon, aged Cheddar, garlic sauce and a soft-cooked egg on a buttered and toasted roll. You can also add Braunschweiger to it. I know BigVito loved it. :D

Re: Burger toppings
Toasted sesame seed buns, american cheese, ketchup, lettuce, onion, bacon.
Alternatively, bacon. By itself. No burger required. Just a pound of bacon. Posted via Mobile Device |

Oh man. Just had a thought. A burger with bacon and maple syrup. I can't decide if this is the worst or the best idea ever. Maybe I can find someone to deep fry it for me? Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Burger toppings
Anyone have any good sauces they put on their burgers?

As far as toppings, I used to load up on all kinds of stuff and have the messiest burgers. I guess in my old age I don't want to deal with the mess so I keep it simple. Lettuce, tomato, cheese and a little mayo. If you have a good burger, you shouldn't need many toppings. |
Re: Burger toppings
Sauteed mushrooms/onions, bacon, mayo, lettuce, tomato, colby jack cheese, and maybe a nice bbq sauce are perfect to me. Five Guys has a great variety of toppings for their burgers.
|
Re: Burger toppings
SB-BBQ sauce, lettuce, pepper jack cheese, bacon, stacker pickle.....on a whole wheat bun :dr
|
Re: Burger toppings
Wow...there are definitely some interesting toppings suggested here!
I have to admit that a good burger should be able to stand on its own if made and grilled properly! That being said, I do put some toppings even on a good burger, but I'm still fairly simplistic in my toppings. Tomato if they are in season, sweet onion, ketchup, and American or cheddar cheese. Favorite topping: Ripe tomato Most used topping: Ketchup No-no topping: Mayo or Miracle Whip (yuck!) Weirdest topping: Blue cheese crumbles |
Re: Burger toppings
Melted Mozzarella, Bacon lettuce tomato and guacamole or I like to do bacon, lettuce tomato and feta cheese if I have my choice.
Oh and I prefer my burgers be on a Martins Potato roll if we're grilling them at home. If we are out and they have them I almost always go for the Pizza Burger, Tomato Sauce and Melted Mozzarella. Geeze now I'm hungry!!!! |
Re: Burger toppings
Mustard, onion, pickles.

Re: Burger toppings
I think tonight I am going to go for the ULTIMATE cheeseburger.
Ingredients: 2x grilled cheese sandwiches (these act as the buns) half pound of 70/30 Bacon Ketchup Lettuce If you don't hear from me again - it is because I died due to foodgasm. Posted via Mobile Device |

Bacon burger with a grilled cheese for each bun:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-_...917_175048.jpg It was awesome. While we're on the topic of REALLY unhealthy food - here's the burger that I had 2 or 3 weeks ago - Bacon cheeseburger on a Krispy Kreme donut that has been cut in half acting as the buns. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-a...827_173811.jpg I may die of a heart attack soon. But at least I'll die happy. |
