3 year olds and cigars.....
So, I have been hiding my cigar smoking from my 3 y.o who is a genius, I have dipped Copenhagen for way too long and that is something I cannot hide, but everytime one goes in my lip it's "what's in your mouth daddy?" or "can I see what's in your mouth daddy?", now I have only been really into cigars for a few months but I just really don't want to broach that subject with her.
I feel bad that I have to fib to her about what I was doing in the yard but it's really not worth explaining or trying to explain to her. Anyone else have this situation or have dealt with it? |
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
Man I'm not looking forward to having to explain that to my kids when I have them.
I would think that if you explained to her that your doing something grown ups do like drink wine and such she might just look at drinking and smoking as a grown up thing instead of it on it's own. Best of luck mike. |
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
My kid asks and I tell her it's a cigar and I like to smoke them. I don't see a problem with it and if she want's to smoke one with me when she is 18 I'll have some fine ones for her to pick through.
|
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
Be honest with her. My three year old has been trying to raid my humidor to play with my cigars since she was 1 1/2. I got a bunch of Arganese for her to play with after she destroyed a Cohiba Genios and Boli Simones. I just make sure to not smoke near her but don't hide it from her.

Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
Although I am in no way one to suggest such things....
I would fess up....Explain it as "something adults do to relax" or "adult candy", make something up that is on her level. I'm sure one way or another she'll get it. Then you don't have to go around feeling bad or guilty. You could even do the old parent trick "one day when you're older we'll talk about that". May as well establish that mutual level of trust and honesty early on. Again, this is just my suggestion which holds zero merit or experience. |
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
Just tell the truth, keep it short and simple. Cigars you like to smoke, and they are good for adults.

Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
Good info and advice bro's.

Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
I'm with everyone else on this one. A friend of mine recently had this chat with his youngest son and told him he can have Bubble Gum Cigars until he is old enough for a Daddy Cigar. I swear the kid just gets psyched now when he sees dad with a cigar since he knows he's easy pickings to work over for a Bubble Gum cigar.

Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
Video tape her asking and then in 15 years when she turns 18 play the video and say "remember this" which she will prob say "no" then you hand her a stick and say " well you wanted to know, now you can find out." lol

Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
I don't have this problem with cigars, but I do with alcohol. I tell my kids when they notice that I'm mixing my drinks with an energy drink rather than alcohol.

I guess the left hand is probably motioning for a light? Right hand looks like it wants a glass of scotch. That's a smart kid, he's got a great future ahead of him. :tu

I went to my humi to get a cigar for my dad , my son, my son in law and me. As I was pulling out the cigars and handing them out, he asks me "what about mine?" So I handed him one and without hesitation, he jumped on the stool and put it in his mouth. Luckily, I had my phone at quick reach and took this quick shot. |
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
Hey Remo, I have a one year old girl and I keep my smoking away from her, for now and am not sure how we will broach the subject when she gets older.
As for beer, she is already having sips of dads beer when he is having some. As for boys, as soon as she can walk we will be taking karate classes. That way I figure if some boy does go to far she can easily break his nose, and i don't have to worry. |
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
Yup, just raise them well and keep them safe :tu

Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
My little 3yr old boy tells me to grab a cigar when we go out to play in the yard. I just tell him this is an adult activity.

Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
Great advice here. As for me, I've been smoking cigars since my son was young, so he's seen me smoke many times. Since I only smoke cigars, it's easy for me to defend. He's gotten the "smoking is bad" classes at school, and when they were in those, he was telling em I shouldn't smoke and that it's not healthy. I told him that I don't inhale, like a cigarette, and that I don't have enough of them for it to be very bad for my health. As I said that, I was thinking "I'm healthier than the people teaching that to him, with the races I do." LOL
And as far as the girls comments go...we have an almost 13yr old (hers with her ex), so I'm on the doorstep (though she's been acting like she was 20something since she was 4). I feel fortunate that I can be intimidating easily at times. :p When I was a teenager, I was the type of kid that the parents wanted their girls to date, but none of the girls did. LOL And I think I'll steal neoflex's line here, too...I hope she finds herself a really nice girlfriend. :p |
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
Honesty is the best policy!
I also have a 3 year old and he knows when I'm in the backyard or garage there's a good chance I'm having a cigar! I give him chocolate cigars to play with and eat, once in awhile. As for my daughter... I just married her off last month!!! http://imageshack.us/m/35/1929/503l.jpg |
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
My 4 yr old daughter likes to smell my cigars when I get them in and unwrap them. When I smoke one out on the
porch she will be out there with me but I feel bad sometimes when she can't sit on my lap because I have the cigar. As for when she gets older... She's a cutey now and I think she is going to be good lookin' as she gets older. I just figure I will tell any dude that comes to pick her up that I wouldn't mind going back to prison :D |
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
man not looking foreward to this my one year old allready crawls over and lifts him self up and bang on the glass of my vino... i am going to have to figure out a way to lock it...
|
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....

Do you have a room where the door can be closed? May be a good alternative on where to keep it. I know when my daughter gets to that stage I may need to reassess my storage devices and go with a Vino or maybe a cooled Cabinet so I can keep them in my office upstairs where she can't just wonder in and have at it. |
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
will have to look its and edgestar, i know the vino i bought from Larry(Ogre) has a key hole, he is looking for the key for me, so i can lock that one, the other one i might have to put one of those child proof plastic locks on it temporary....

My daughter will be three in September. I don't smoke around her, but she knows mama smokes cigars. We really have not had any ?'s, just that is mama's cigars. Now the lighter is a totally different story!!!! I have to keep it HIDDEN! I generally smoke when I don't have her, because cigar smoke is so pungent and she likes snuggling! I hope this helps! I have to have talks with her about my SCOTCH being for adults way more often that the cigar situation. You would think that it taste bad to her, but she likes it. Definately my child :D |
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
I have a 4yr old boy and a 2yr old girl. I smoke cigars, I drink and I brew beer. They ask questions and I answer honestly. When the 4yr old has asked to try the cigar I said "When you are 18 you can". When he asked me why I told him because his body has to be big like mine (at which he points and laughs at my belly) and that just like driving, the law saw you have to be a certain age or the police will come and get you. Would this conversation work with an older kid, probably not but I am just learning as I go. My parents drank and smoked cigars in front of me and I always understood that I couldn't until I was older.
By the way Remo, I haven't forgotten about you :chr |
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
Good suggestions guys, thanks.
Albert, I know :r |
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
I too get this question from my 4 & 5 yr olds. They have gotten the smoking is bad for you stuff; my 5 yr old from school. Anyway, my wife smokes cigarettes, and they know they are bad for her.
She's trying to quit now, but a but it is hard for the kids to understand the difference between cigarettes and cigars. They understand that some drinks are "grown up" drinks and that some grown ups smoke. That much get. Good luck. BTW, it's hard to think about some guy coming over to date my daughter (4) someday. That said I have a healthy firearm collection and I'm about 6'6" & 295. I promise you I will find a number of ways to put the fear of God into some poor kid's soul. |
Re: 3 year olds and cigars.....
My wife has a 4 and 8 year old both girls. Whenever a box is on the steps the first thing they ask is if it is more cigars. Whoops guess I need to cut back. Anyway everytime it is cigars they are the first to open the boxes so they can smell them. I dont smoke near them unless we are hiking. When they ask about them I tell them I smoke cigars to relax.

OP, my 3 year old knows what cigars are, and knows not to go near them. I told him once he's big like me, he can if he wants to. But cigars are only for grownups. If they ever ask to try your beer though, let them. It only takes one little sip for them to never ask again! :r |

my 3 year old daughter told me my cigar was stinky the other day ;)
