Use a traveldor for three months, or buy a small desktop?

I'll be spending three months away from home this summer. I'll need to buy something to use while I'm away, as I'm not taking my vino with me. I currently have a 10ct cigar caddy, so that alone won't cut it.

I'm considering the following options.

1) getting a small desktop (that will hold 40 or so) and bringing the cigar caddy with me, or
2) getting a larger cigar caddy or similar traveldor and just use that for three months.

My concerns are that I won't need a desktop after the three months, so it'll just sit around after that, and I'm not sure if I should use a larger cigar caddy for that long of a term (3 months).

What suggestions do you guys have?

get yourself a large cigar caddy. you can always utilize cigar caddy later, and storage will not be a problem it has a better seal than any desktop you can find

Large caddy and Heartfelt bead tubes. It seals airtight so I wouldn't see how you couldn't store cigars in there indefinitely.

small cooler? It would be reusable later, but that is just me being my cheap self.

which one are you more likely to reuse at a later date? If neither, go the small cooler route. If nothing else, you can sell a cooler more easily on craigslist later.

I forgot to mention... if you take the foam trays out of the cigar caddy, and use baggies, you can fit a ton more cigars... A 50 count caddy can easily store 3 times that amount.

How's about a Tupperware container. It can go right from kitchen to suitcase to kitchen. Done deal. :tu

Re: Use a traveldor for three months, or buy a small desktop?

Tupperware is a decent idea, and I used that as a humidor when I started anyway.

Seems like the consensus is to go the cigar caddy route. I aware how good the seal is, I just wasn't sure if it was fit for long term storage, but I guess I can't see why it wouldn't be.

Seems like I'll be on the lookout for a 40 or 50 ct. cigar caddy the next couple months. (I'm cheap, so I'll look for a deal, and if I don't find one I'll hit up cigarmony).

you can always take some ceder dividers from boxes and line the foam with it

Watch cigar monster for the 40 counts.

With a boveda pack or a tube of beads (HF or HCM) a cigar caddy or pelican case is good for months of storage. Heck, even without the pack or tube it's good for a fairly long period of time, how long depends on how often you open it.

Thanks for the tip. How often do they come up?

Scott's right! And you can use a small amount of HCM :) (or Heartfelt) beads to keep the RH steady.

Make sure you get a food-worthy container, not a storage container.

I've already got both types of beads, so I can take either with me when I make my decision. :tu

I didn't remember to type this last night, but the seal is exactly why I wasn't sure how it'd be long term, since there isn't any air exchange at all.

I guess I could open it once a week at least (which shouldn't be a problem).

if you're looking for cheap, gallon ziplock bag(s).

Not looking quite that cheap. I want to bring some pretty nice smokes with me, so the cheapest I'd be looking is a cigar caddy or small desktop.

Arent you going to smoke cigars out of it? The simple process of opening up the caddy to grab out a cigar is more than enough to "exchange" the air.

I think a lot of people get worked up about air exchange...some people store their cigars airtight for decades and think the lack of air exchange is actually a positive thing. I dont think youll have to worry about a couple months. :2

FWIW, I would be willing to store my best cigars in ziplock bags for extended periods of time.
Not much different than tupperware, a cooler, or a cigar caddy as far as keeping humidity in.

Cigar storage is one of the things people obsess over more than necessary, IMHO.

No, I saw it. But from your post you made it seem like it had to be opened to air out. Like I said before:

Cool. Thanks for the advice! I may have to consider it.

I actually like the idea that someone said earlier about using ziplocks or five-finger bags inside a cigar caddy without the foam so I can fit more. That might be the best idea.

I may even bring my cabinetta... but maybe not.

Oh. No. I was trying to (and apparently failing to) be clever in saying that it'll get opened at least once a week for a smoke.

And "air exchange" :D

I keep cigars in a ziplock at work with a small bag of Shilala beads during the warmer months to have a smoke on my drive home.

Can I use my 40count, or one of my desktops, sure... but like Julian said, the ziplock works just as well, although it doesnt provide the protection of some other options.

I always take a small cigar caddy with me when I travel but I always take more cigars than fit in a caddy. I use ziplocks for the extras. Once I used some tupperware, but more for protection from the rest of the contents in my backpack than anything else. I use the small caddy when I am at my destination and want to carry my cigars without damaging them.

Ziplocks are great! And, like Moe said, if you are going to be using the Ziplock for awhile in a drier climate you can always throw a small bag of beads or a Boveda pack in with them.

The problem with traveling with a larger caddy or humidor is that they are bigger, weigh more, and take up more space. Not much of a problem for a road trip, but is a real issue when flying...

Re: Use a traveldor for three months, or buy a small desktop?

Thanks again guys. I'll be driving, so the space isn't as much of an issue and I do want the crush protection while they are packed away in my car with my other belongings.

not sure if it ends up being cheaper but I would check Ebay for a pelican case. Just match the model number to something that has the same dimensions as a cigar caddy.

Not sure your time frame but I've seen the large pelican cases without foam go for pretty cheap.
