Favorite Sushi Restaurants
This is a follow up thread to my Steak topic. I think this would be a good place to come and find suggestions for places to eat if BOTL's are traveling out of town either for work or whatever. Sushi is another cuisine that I adore.
Ok, so here is a place in Chicago that is great. Rolls 'N Bowls. It's on North Lincoln Avenue and Catalpa. The place is very small, only sits like 8 or 10 people at most. Reserve a table if you are eating after 7. The quality of the Sushi is top notch, and prices are good. It is BYOB too. http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/alA4c..._x_yGW6ibFhGHQ Next time I'm near the city, I want to try Sushi Wabi. That place is sushi heaven from what I hear. |
Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
In Orlando, Amura rules and it's next door to Corona Cigar.

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
Here South of Charlotte I have tried many places not too far from the house and I really like Kami in Wesley Chapel. In Charlotte CowFish is supposed to be really goo but have not tried it yet. The specialize in Sushi and Hamburgers. Sounds like a weird combo but everyone I know that's been there loves it.

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
Wasa in Tustin, CA is killer and quite innovative. If you are in the Portland area, the best thing to do is ask a local at the time, since there are so many and it really depends on which sushi chef is where at the time. But Sinju at Bridgeport Village is always outstanding.
It is kind of traditional, in a sushi thread, to point out that sushi is vinegar'd rice. I'm partial to sashimi and donburi myself. |
Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
Two places I can recommend in the Central Virginia area:
Akida (in Richmond near the museum district) http://richmond.citysearch.com/profi..._japanese.html and Chopstix (a bit further west in Midlothian) http://www.yelp.com/biz/chopstix-asi...nge-midlothian Both very reasonable, great sushi with an artistic flair |
Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
Noble Fish, in Clawson, Michigan. It is just north of Royal Oak (popular bar district), or 15 miles north of Detroit.
Anyway, it is really a Japanese fish market that has a sushi counter in the back. They have probably enough seating for 15. They have won awards year after year for best sushi in the state. Prices are great, sushi/sashimi is even better. Here's a link to their website. If you click on "Restaurant" near the top you'll see more info and a link to their menu with pricing. http://www.noblefish.com/ |
Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
Noblefish, been meaning to try there. Heard so much good things about it.

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
MF in Atlanta is fantastic but it is normally out of my price range unless a special occasion.
I like my local place Thaicoon and Sushi Bar in Marietta but I love going to Aomi in Norcross when I am over near my parents (both Marietta and Norcross are suburbs North of Atlanta) |

I think I posted this video in the "general" sushi thread we have here, but I figured I would post it here also. If I had the money, I would fly to Japan just to eat here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuhu4QZJZyw

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
I like going to PetSmart, picking out a few fish and when they ask me if I need a tank or food, I just look at them and say, "Nah, I'll just eat it here." and hold up a container of cooked rice.
My arraignment is next week, would anyone like to help me out with some nice letters? |
Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
There is a place called Osaka Sushi in Plano, TX that is to die for! It is an all you can eat place, which sounds sketchy, but they serve top-notch sushi. They also have tons of tempura, and a chowmein station where you can ask the chef to mix in any vegetable or meat you want. I love this place!

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
I think the best sushi I've had in the States was Ginza in Boston's Chinatown. Locally, we finally got a decent sushi place a few years ago. Before that, you had to go to Albany or Vestal (an hour plus each way). The local place (Tokyo Tavern) trucks their fish up from the city several times a week. It's not quite the same as NY, Philly or Boston, but it's pretty good.

I got a kick out of the "conveyor-belt" places. The sushi bar was an island with a conveyor belt running around. They would put sushi and sashimi on different color plates (for cost) on the belt. When you saw something you liked, you grabbed the plate. When you were done, you took your stack of plates to the cashier and paid. Also in Japan, I got to try some types of sushi you just can't get here, like whale and flying fish. Posted via Mobile Device |

Kihei, Maui you have 2 small places, Koiso & Sushi Paradise. Both are very traditional and very good. Both have great quality of fish for sashimi, very clean.

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
There was a place near me that has good otoro, mirugai, ama ebi, uni, etc.. once a year on "customer appreciation day" they would have a buffet which included unlimited trips to the sushi bar for 6 pieces of nigiri at a time.. I clocked 11 trips to the sushi bar and each time it was 2 pieces of otoro, 2 pieces of uni, and 2 pieces of mirugai.. 66 pieces of nigiri which on a normal night would have run me about $350
sadly, the good times only lasted a couple years.. :( |
Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
I've probably been to 6-8 different sushi joints here and to tell the truth, I can't tell any difference, in the basic sushi at least. The differences I see are the atmosphere, the different other kinds of food offered, and the prices. I love it but don't get it as often as I like, sushi either ;)

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
Sushi! :) We have a few places here in town but my favorite local place is called Fulins. http://fulinsclevelandtn.com/ Some of my favorites from other places have been, Tono Sushi in Washington, DC http://www.tonosushi.com/index.php?o...d=46&Itemid=28 (<--They used to have an all you can eat sushi for $45!) and this used to be one of my favorites as well Hokkaido http://www.hokkaidowok.it/. Hearing Japanese people speaking Italian is quite a treat. ;)

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
This place has spoiled me. I'm reluctant to even go anywhere else. I'll still try another place from time to time but haven't found anything that comes even close.
My Wife and I enjoy it weekly either dine-in or take-out! Sapporo Haru http://www.menupages.com/restaurants...d=11492&page=4 |

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
Out here in Dana Point off the 5 freeway there is one called Kotobuki. I believe the owner has one in Las Vegas as well. When we go we don't order anything off the menu except our drinks. Hiro, who is the owner and master chef, just starts going at it and serves us. Sometimes he'll just create things on the fly.
Every other year on the 4th of July he holds a buffet for his 100 closest customers. We go every time and it's all you can eat for $55 a person on that day. |

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
While in VA last week I went to a place in Midlothian called Yamatos Steak House. My buddy and thrashed a Love Boat for 4. 40 pieces of sashimi, 20 pieces of sushi, 4 rolls. We could have eaten more after we were done. Do they make a Love Boat for 6? ;)

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
This is going to sound strange but one of the best places I've eaten at was the sushi bar in side the Circus Circus hotel in Reno. I was doing work there a few years back and a co-worker said they had a great menu, I was really reluctant to let some Clown serve me raw food, but I'm glad I did it wa great.

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
Local in the Gardena, CA area are two I favor:
Sakae Sushi Sushi Bei In Hollywood I would have to give it to Yamashiro's. Stupid expensive, but an experience. |
Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
We just had a recent one open nearby my house right off of the I-15 in Wildomar, CA. It's actually a sushi buffet and I have to admit they have a good sushi menu and don't rush you or bring everything to your table at once. They even have a kid's menu which is a must for me.
Sushi Den is the name. |

Re: Favorite Sushi Restaurants
Denver CO - sushi Den
Portland - Sinju (agree with Markem post on page 1). There are 3 Sinju in Oregon but the bridgeport one south of portland imo is best. Salt lake city - happy Sumo at the gateway. Maybe a better one in SLC, but this one works for me. Vegas - the old one at the Bellagio was better than the new one, but it is still good. I miss the jellyfish fish tank. The one at TI is good, and the one at Mandalay Bay is good and has fast service if your flying solo or in a hurry. Scottsdale AZ - Roka Akor (amazing but not cheap) Now I'm hungry. |
