How fast do you drive
Just curious to see if I am the only one or I have just been lucky enough to be stuck behind slow @ss people lately and by lately I mean a few months or maybe I just have not adjusted to a slower lifestyle as I would be curious to hear your opinions and see if it varies by region.

Re: How fast do you drive
Depends on location. When I am traveling in South Texas, I commonly do 90 or so. There are very few cops--only border patrol. I am white in a company car, so I do not get bothered. Around town in S.A---at or below the speed limit because cops here are crazy.

Re: How fast do you drive
I fit into the 5-10 over most often but it seems lately I am always stuck behind the people perfectly comfortable doing at least 5-10 Under. It's kind of strange how often it happens lately. So I figured I would see what my fellow inmates do.

Re: How fast do you drive
I do about 30k a year and around here it is either bumper-to-bumper or you are doing 75 and getting passed by minivans full of kids.
I just did front brakes pads that I had previously done in June of 2009 |
Re: How fast do you drive
I drive it like I stole it. But I drive a Merc Sprinter. So, driving it like I stole it generally means like any other White Van Man in the UK :D

Wife says "Too damn fast!!!" :r :r :r

Slow and in the middle lane...I'm no crazy speed demon on the road.
|
Re: How fast do you drive
I usually keep it about 5 over the posted limits on highways and major thoroughfares but usually drive slower then posted in residential areas because I don't want to hit a kid.
|
Re: How fast do you drive
5-10 over the posted. We now have the radar machines on the side of the road that show your speed when you pass. I am going to see how fast I can pass it. :D

Re: How fast do you drive
On the interstate, I'll go 8-12 mph over...depends how the flow of traffic is going.
Around town on the rural roads of South Jersey, I go pretty much the speed limit. They're generally pretty reasonable. |
Re: How fast do you drive
Depends on where I am driving. On the interstates or 4 lane divided roads - 5 to 20 over and maybe even a tad more. In residential areas - right at the posted speed limit with no more than 1 or 2 over.

5-10 Over usually.....
But sometimes the Lotus makes certain demands of me...and I must comply. :r |
Re: How fast do you drive
Depends if I'm in my truck or at work ;)
|
Re: How fast do you drive
The general pace of the cars around me has a big part to play in my speed. I never want to be the fastest or the slowest... middle of the pack. 5-10 above is usually key on the back roads, maybe 5 above the speed limit on highways.

Re: How fast do you drive
Well, the factory sets the speed limiter to kick in at 141 mph..... :r
I generally drive 5-10 over with a radar detector on the dash. As far as top end, I've only goosed it up over 120 once, and that wasn't really intentional. ;) |

with the flow, if I am the only car generally -9 over

Re: How fast do you drive
Tough to answer with so many factors that come into play.
what I'm driving,my pickup or Buick- what time it is- where I am- As a general rule,if the conditions permit; I will be honking down the road. Keep in mind,I have had a CDL since I was 18.I am 52 now. You might say I have a mile or two on the clock... |
Re: How fast do you drive
I try to drive safe for the conditions. On the freeway I usually try to keep 12-14 over the limit to avoid the big >15 miles over ticket. On sides streets and whatever it just really depends.
Around here we have some weird situations of big 3-4 lane one way roads that are technically "residential" and posted at 25 mph even though they are the major traffic arteries through the city. Those I'll sometimes be in the 40-50 mph range (and have people passing me) depending on conditions. Strangely I feel the people rigidly at or below the speed limit are more dangerous than people driving fast because they become obstacles by not keeping up with the pace of traffic. The worst is slow people cruising in passing lanes. If you ever drive somewhere like the autobahn where the rigorously enforce lane discipline you can tell that distraction and carelessness are much more dangerous than speed by itself. Of course combined is just a recipe for tragedy. |

Re: How fast do you drive
I've gotten too many speeding tickets and figured out that they are not worth it anymore. I guess I'm getting old. That and I've lost about 5 or 6 friends/schoolmates from auto accidents. I drive for a living and see how the fools drive, and I don't want to be a dead fool.
I used to be wide-ass open all the time. I even had a sticker on the back window that said "drive it like you stole it". I got rid of it, slowed down, and got a sticker that says "don't laugh... your daughter might be in here" |

My GF says I drive like an old lady. I've been driving twelve years and have had ONE moving violation that entire time. |
Re: How fast do you drive
Depends where I'm at and what I'm driving.
If I'm on the motorcycle: 5-10mph over on surface streets 10-15mph over on the freeways If I'm in the car: 5 over on surface streets 10 over on the freeways |
Re: How fast do you drive
Radar detector is a must!
|
Re: How fast do you drive
Highways 8-10 over. Local two lane roads I do the speed limit to 5 over.

Re: How fast do you drive
In Norfolk you just go with the flow of traffic, which is usually 15+ over the speed limit or a dead stop

I agree. Lately I've been seeing a lot of people on my way home from work who go no more than 10 under the limit (4 lane divided highway), and always right alongside someone else in the right lane. Nobody in front of them for a good 1/4 mile or more, and a big cluster of people behind them trying to get around them. I can tell that many times these people are doing that intentionally because they tend to speed way up and block you in when you try to get around them.:td |
Re: How fast do you drive
I have a driver so I have no idea.:D
|
Re: How fast do you drive
On the interstate highways if traffic allows I am going 80 in the 65 zones. Usually with heavy traffic on my normal routes, the flow of traffic is around 72-75.
I drive almost exclusively in Ohio, so its 65 everywhere. City streets I drive the speed limit. |
Re: How fast do you drive
On the highways 1-5 over or with the flow of traffic, residential it's the speed limit But on the water it's a fast as the boat will go of course except in no wake zones(way to heavy of a fine:rlz)
|
Re: How fast do you drive
I always drove the speed limit (past tense since I live in town now):noon
**grinch grin** |
Re: How fast do you drive
I tend to drive 5-10mph over the speed limit. But I usually just set the cruise control at 5 on the interstate. If I'm driving around town I just do the speed limit, plus I live 2 min away from one of the larger county police stations... The roads I travel to and from work and usually well stocked with Transit and State Police. Also, there are two speed camera set-ups on the same route...Tickets are said to be handed out to drivers going over 12mph over the posted limit. The kicker is they are in work zones so the fines double. Most of the interstate here is under heavy construction...

Re: How fast do you drive
I am usually in the 5-10 area. My car usually won't go above 70 mph anyways. :r
|
Re: How fast do you drive
I'm usually pretty content to drive the speed limit. Must be the old age. :)
|
Re: How fast do you drive
As fast as I can get away with. F the cops :banger;)

Re: How fast do you drive
Surface streets usually 5 over, unless it is a large divided road. Interstate, usually 5-10 over, occasionally faster if the "need" arises. I do have one exception, I-696. The speed limit is 70 and it is not uncommon to have a steady flow of traffic passing you while you're going 80-85. The speed limit on that road is only a suggestion. I used to live just 1/4 mile off I-696 so I drove it a lot. Now I'm 50 miles away so, I don't drive on it much anymore.
BTW, radar detector is my friend. Also, kids, residential areas I will drive under the speed limit. Especially when there are a lot of parked cars on the road where you can't see well. |

Re: How fast do you drive
that was on an empty highway, and I wasn't going 'like I stole it' fast, only 13 miles over the 65 speedlimit
|
Re: How fast do you drive
I'm usually in the 5-10 over group. I do notice though when smoking a cigar and driving I drive slower.
|
Re: How fast do you drive
Well, here in CT the flow of traffic is either 50 city / 80 highway or 10 mph regardless of the limit. I usually try to stick to the 80th percentile, so I am slightly faster than most on the road, but not the fastest. So, if everyone else is going 80 in a 55, so am I.
|
Re: How fast do you drive
I'm generally in the 5-10 over the limit range, but when on a highway it could be more like 10-20 range.
I had a 95 v-8 t-bird that had a governor on it. It would cut out at 105mph. |
