Relatively new to cigars....looking for recommendations/ideas
Howdy, I recently started smoking cigars about four months ago. It started with one at a golf course and now I find myself caught in the romance of the leaf. I love the traditions....the accessories...the time it takes to enjoy one. I recently smoked a rocky patel 1990 that I loved and was wondering if you guys knew of any that had a similar profile...I liked the coffee and chocolate flavors it had. At one point, about halfway through I swear I was chewing on coffee beans.
Any ideas? And thank you, in advance? Scott |

Re: Relatively new to cigars....looking for recommendations/ideas
I didn't get any chocolate flavor from the 601 Blue I smoked. It was a bold, peppery cigar. I will say that most cigars that people describe as tasting like coffee or chocolate I don't pick up those flavors. I do seem to pick up cedar, pepper and sweet spices better.

Re: Relatively new to cigars....looking for recommendations/ideas
Any (or all) of the following:
- Padron -- Any -- but especiall the 1964 or 1926 anniversaries - Arturo Fuente Hemingway (Short Story, Classic, Signature, Work of Art, Between the Lines) Maduro - Perdomo Lot 23, Perdomo 2, Perdomo Habano Maduro - Gran Habano Corojo #5 - El Triunfador Lancero |
Re: Relatively new to cigars....looking for recommendations/ideas
Thanks CigarNut....that's two votes for both the Padron and AF Hemingway Short Story. I'll be sure to try those.
Dunkel, I had a 601 Green label yesterday...very heavy on the pepper flavor - I agree with you there...I'm hoping the blues live up to their billing Scott |
Re: Relatively new to cigars....looking for recommendations/ideas
Being relatively new to cigars myself, here is a list of cigars that I also really enjoyed.
Arturo Fuente Hemingway Short Story CAO Black CAO Mx2 Gurkha Micro-Batch Liga TPB-1 Perdomo Reserve 10th Anniversary Maduro Perdomo Grand Cru Perdomo Habano Perdomo Patriarch If you really want to try something new, try the ACID line, but keep these in a separate humidor from your regular cigars. ACID's are flavor infused cigars and are "said" to taint the flavor of your regular cigars. |
Re: Relatively new to cigars....looking for recommendations/ideas
There are lots of great smokes to try to see what you like. When I was getting my feet wet, I bought sampler after sampler.
Holt's has a nice Fuente sampler, and a nice Hemingway sampler. Both are listed on this page. If you want to be introduced to something a little more on the peppery side, you could try a Don Pepin Garcia Sampler. This one by CI seems pretty nice. They have others too. You may be able to get it cheaper on cbid. Enjoy sampling! |

I am also a newbie but my favorite so far in my venture is:

I tried a 601 blue label tonight....pretty spicy at first, then it settled down. Not the brownie flavor that was talked about...more like dark chocolate and roasted coffee bean. Very good. Very very good. |
Re: Relatively new to cigars....looking for recommendations/ideas
Ahhh... I was hoping maybe a little closer to me. lol
I am still trying to find an asylum smoking buddy. I am in Sioux Falls. And currently puffing on an Alec Bradley MAXX... It's decent, but I still like the Alec Bradley Select Cabinet Reserve more. lol |
Re: Relatively new to cigars....looking for recommendations/ideas
I get over to SF quite often. We'll have to get together one of these days...my buddy smoked a maxx tonight too. He agrees with you...those SCR's are nice

Re: Relatively new to cigars....looking for recommendations/ideas
Cigar bid has done me in. I got 150 cigars on Tuesday and another 100 coming next Tuesday. I really need to do me some smoking and slow down on the buying.
