George Steinbrenner Reportedly Suffers Heart Attack

Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner Reportedly Suffers Heart Attack

Published July 13, 2010
FoxNews.com

URGENT: New York Yankees Owner George Steinbrenner has reportedly suffered a massive heart attack and was rushed to a hospital in Florida overnight, local media reported.

Emergency crews responded to a call at Steinbrenner's home in Tampa Monday night and took him to St. Joseph's Hospital, where his condition is unkown, 9Online.com reported.

Steinbrenner has owned the Yankees since 1973, though his declining health forced him to hand over day-to-day operations of the team to his sons in 2006.

Prayers sent to the Steinbrenner family. I was a Mets fan, now a Rays fan, but I have always been a George Fan. I was jealous that he was not the owner of my team and then I had the pleasure of meeting George at a High School Coaches Clinic. He made all of the coaches feel like he was looking up to us, instead of talking down to us like most rich famous people would. George was the most giving man in the Tampa Community wether it be money or time. He always was giving so much to one cause or another that the Hillsborough County School board named a School after him. RIP George

I agree that I always wished he owned my team too. Baseball lost a character today. RIP.

RIP Boss...I remember going with my dad to the Yankee games. We would catch the bus to the stadium and we would always meet his friend and his friend's son on the bus....all to see Billy Martin get fired up and usually get finned by Steinbrenner that following Monday

RIP from a Red Sox fan. The rivalry with him and his Yankees was real, and often bitter, but the guy had a heart of gold. His generous contributions each year to the Jimmy Fund, the Sox charitable organization, make him aces in my book. He may have been a crotchety, mean SOB, but he was a good-hearted, crotchety, mean SOB.

Condolences to his family and all of Yankee-dom.

As hard as it is to say as a non Yanks fan, he was a good man, and he was the face of baseball in many ways for decades.....he will be missed.

He completely changed the mechanics of pro sports, and not just baseball. The huge player salaries and the subsequent league revenue sharing plans can be directly attributed to him. He made a lot of people very rich.

Rest in peace, Boss. For every negative thing that could be said of you, two positive ones would need follow to be fair. After failing to acquire your beloved Cleveland Indians, you paid a pittance to CBS for the storied-yet-downtrodden Yankees. Then, despite the fact that you were far from the richest owner in the sport, you built them back into a second dynasty . . . and caught hell for it from the owners and fans of more frugal, less successful teams. Your business sense informed you that one must spend money to make money, and your love of the game gave you the passion to pursue the ultimate goal, again and again and again. Under your ownership the Yankees managed to win more post-season games than most teams have even played, and that is something your detractors cannot take from you.

Thank you, George. You will be missed.
