The LGC ping lighter

Cigary pointed this lighter out to us in another thread, and I was gonna continue the threadjack and realized, "WHY?" So this is a thread now. Deal with it, lol. Just got my lighter in and I'd like to comment that if the regular priceof this is ACTUALLY $250, I'll eat my hat! BUT it is a nice lighter. WOrds have been bandied about over how realistic the "ping" is on opening. Cigary termed it "Dead-Nutts on" if I recall correctly. I went online to HEAR the ping of a S.T. Dupont lighter, and dead nutts is correct. It's got a nice soft flame and all of the controls and valves are recessed under fold away mechanizms just like the french-made superlighter. Maybe lighters shaped like it cost $250. Or maybe this is a better lighter than 25 bucks should be able to buy. I like mine. Glad I got two even. But the logo of LGC looks like some kind of sticker they threw on a white lighter, almost detracting frm the overall lighter vibe. But it is part of the finish, it just looks oddly small. And the GOLD trim looks a lot better in person, all of the silvery parts in the photo are actually gold. Plating or something, maybe just gold chrome, but nice. Now the other tabletop lighter that I bought just to justify ordering online and paying shipping makes me feel a bit like a meth hed. Too big? |

Bought two of these as well, arrived yesterday. I have been amazed at the niceness & quality for such a cheap lighter. I have been sitting in my office half the morning playing with it. |
Re: The LGC ping lighter
Apparently the beat the clock is for a month, so maybe a week or so to get in on this, lol.

Re: The LGC ping lighter
It looks like the EverTorch
|
Re: The LGC ping lighter
Weren't you guys saying the evertorch would light soft OR jet??
Or are you referring the the crackhead lighter? OK, no I google pac-manned the thing and you are talking about the Dupont knockoff. NO, there is no jet outlet on this lighter, but the lighters do look similar when closed. |

Re: The LGC ping lighter
Yeah, looking at the Ever-tech website, it sems like they offer quite a few types, so the dual flame
type feature being absent wouldn't DQ it from being from that manufacturer. http://www.evertech-inc.com/pro.asp?pg=4&type=type1 |
Re: The LGC ping lighter
Mine is arriving today so I'll try to get some pictures up this evening, maybe even a video of the ping sound :)
|
Re: The LGC ping lighter
Single of dual flame?
|
Re: The LGC ping lighter
These are just the single flame
|
Re: The LGC ping lighter
I bought one also. Haven't gotten it yet though.

Re: The LGC ping lighter
WTG Brad! I'm still dickin around with this lighter and can't get enough of the PING...it's as authentic as the real one. The LGC emblem is ok...I like LGC cigars so I'm not offended by the logo. It doesnt have the combo torch/soft flame like the Ever Torch lighter which I have been looking at for the last 2 years. I like that one but it doesn't PING...I'm obsessed with the PING. I own 2 other lighters that have a combo torch/soft flame from buylighters.com and they work great so my fascination and fetish is fueled by none other than our resident brother on here...Bart the Ripper! I sent out one to him because he needs to play with this thing plus Bart is always bombing the crap outta me with his unlimited supply of swag.
I might ( no doubt ) will buy another LGC lighter because it's just that good. I'm not a lighter expert but being able to buy this sucker for only $24 is stealing it...and it's well worth $50 or over for what it does. If EverTorch can put that PING on its lighter I'd probably buy it because of the 2 in 1 feature. This hobby is breaking me cuz it just isn't about cigars anymore. |
Re: The LGC ping lighter
How does it refuel? If it refuels like it's Dupont counter part, it is going to be a pain to refuel.

Mine filled easily also. 4 or 5 4 second pumps.

Re: The LGC ping lighter
I got mine in the mail yesterday, and I was immediately impressed. It looked WAY better than in the picture, yes, it had gold trim instead of what looked to be silver, but it still looked good. It is very heavy and just feels well built. For a copy of a famous lighter, I was impressed. Excited to hear the "dead nutts" on ping sound, I flipped open the lighter.
Well, to say the least, I wasn't very impressed. Maybe I got a dud? Do your lighters sound like this? Compared to a REAL S.T. Dupont...it sounds cheap and doesn't have a resounding ring. Below is a video of a real S.T. Dupont (not my video) and a video of my lighter I just took. For $25 + shipping though...it's significantly nicer than any of the other $15-20 lighters I've purchased, and I'm glad to have a soft flame lighter now to compliment my torches :) Real S.T. Re: The LGC ping lighter
Nice lighter what kind of Flints do you need to use with these?
|
Re: The LGC ping lighter
For $24 mine sounds exactly like the $200 Dupont! :r

Ping. |
Re: The LGC ping lighter
EverTorch Pings? I love the dual softflame/torch but if they ping...I think I need this one too.
|
Re: The LGC ping lighter
just ordered one...hopefully I don't get a dud too
|
Re: The LGC ping lighter
I'm 2 for 2 Steve but they say if you aren't satisfied you have 3 days to return it to them for a refund or exchange. If you don't do that then you are under the Manufacturers warranty which means the PING probably doesn't factor as a "warranty issue" but who knows as if you pay by credit card you can always dispute the charge and win.

BTW.. if you look at these lighters with ping, you would find a phillips screw head and a piece of metal, some experimentation, clipping, tightening or bending may have a positive outcome. |
Re: The LGC ping lighter
Everyone is forgetting you paid $24.

Re: The LGC ping lighter
Having watched both videos back to back, you are right, the ST is much
more musical. They are in the same range, which is how I determined that mine was so close. But I watched the same video you did there and for some reason never put it together the the STD (hehe) has a nice clear musical ring and my cheap lady lighter has a clink. I am good with it. You need to sue Cigary or his friend and keep the lighter. |
Re: The LGC ping lighter
I think there might be some kind of tension adjustment you could do with the pring to alter the sustain on the ring,
the only problem it sounds like it has. But better materials likely play a role, may be the biggest role. |
Re: The LGC ping lighter
Seams like for the price we are splitting hairs about the sound. I love my lighter.
|
Re: The LGC ping lighter
In my review post I pretty clearly stated for $24 it is a great lighter :) By no means was I expecting an exact replica of the real Dupont lighters. However I was just lead to believe that everybody else had much better results so I just didn't want to sit on it if I had gotten a dud lighter.

Re: The LGC ping lighter
Yeah, don't feel too bad. We're not accusing you of being petty. haha.
Like I said, I went through a very similar, if not exact sequence of events. Read Cigary's post, google and Utubed the ping sound of the original, remembered the pitch, ignored the tone, got in my lighter, heard the same pitch and never even considered the total lack of sustain. TO ME, and I do not know what the Dupont lighter was made of, it's all in the metal. You get a nice ringing sustain out of a high grade metal. Knockoffs, you could certainly expect a total lack of a ring. Maybe Dupont's lighter actually has PRING. Bling with pring. The knockoffs have ping. After watching both videos again, I think my knockoff has a little more of a pronounced ping, but still lacks the resounding ping. |
Re: The LGC ping lighter
Yeah, I'm not messing with an RMA on this. It's a great looking lighter with a really nice flame. I seriously doubt I'd get any different kind of sound from another one.
I really enjoy the light I get from this lighter for sure though, worth the money! |
Re: The LGC ping lighter
Anyone know how we would go about replacing the flints?
|
Re: The LGC ping lighter
I'm guessing dupont flints will work well, and you can get an 8 pack of them for like $2, although I forget the website I found them on.
I'm not sure Zippo flints would be the same thing or the right size, which is unfortunate because those are readily available everywhere :-P |

Re: The LGC ping lighter
Haha, yeah, that was the exact site I had found. I'm guesing the gray/white ones are the ones we need.
Also, that OpusX Dupont lighter is a thing of beauty...if only that one was $24.95 too, haha :p |

It seems that there is a strip of metal inside the cap or head of the lighter which is actually causing the PING(possibly even some sort of a bell behind it???), some adjustment/modification here could lead to a better PING. My lighter PINGS if I hit the head, while open, with my finger. Never seen an ST Dupont in person, is this how they generate their PING as well? |
Re: The LGC ping lighter

Incidentally, the "ping" was never supposed to exist; in the 50's, when S. T. Dupont first started making lighters, a mistake was made, and two cogs accidentally ended up generating excess friction. This resulted in an unwanted noise whenever the lighter was opened. The company, striving for perfection, understandably wanted this mistake fixed. However, it didn't take long for the "ping" to work its magic on customers, and needless to say, the company left the mistake in place. The "ping" might be what makes S. T. Dupont lighters distinctive, but it is not what makes them special, what gives them their charm. The lighters are a case of the whole being greater than the sum; each aspects of the lighter, the weight, the "ping," the high quality of materials, the care and precision that goes into the assembly, are all special in their own right. But, when put together these individual parts create a lighter unlike any other. courtesy of http://blogcritics.org/tastes/articl...an-s-t/page-2/ |
Re: The LGC ping lighter
Cigary whomped me upside the head with a generous gift of this exceedingly nice lighter. It's almost too nice to use.
Just what this old Bart needs - another addition to my addiction. Gary has helped me matriculate from matchbooks to BIC lighters to a shelf of butane lighters. Thanks professor -- and watch for those big brown trucks! |
Re: The LGC ping lighter
How would one go about replacing the flint? I have never used a lighter like this. Only torches!
|
Re: The LGC ping lighter
Buy the replacement flints that were posted earlier in the thread then that little slide on the top of the lighter slides back and you would drop the replacement flint in there. If you look closely you can see the flint in the chamber and how it's positioned.

To put it back in, just drop it in and make sure it lays on it's side and not up and down. If you don't get it in right, your lighter won't spark. Hope that helps until I can get some pics up. |
