Key West
Ok, back from Key Largo and it was amazing!!!!! Starting to book the trip back and heading down to Key West after the wedding. Any good suggestions on where to stay? We are looking at Wicker Inn, SouthernMost Hotel, and my dad stayed at Best Western and said it was good. Any suggestions? We want a nice place but don't want to pay over $200. And we want near Deval St
Thanks Todd |

I stayed here 6 months ago. Great hotel. Great location. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

Re: Key West
Try Hotwire, you won't know the hotel name, go for the star rating.
Key West is very rich in cigar tradition. There are lot's of places to see cigars being handrolled. I've stayed at the Marriot off-season and it was reasonable. If price is a factor consider staying somewhere up route 1 off of Key West. Please have a beer at Captain Tony's. That's where I fell of the wagon about 15 years ago and I haven't looked back.:chr |
Re: Key West
www.casa325.com , not fancy, just comfortable. In the middle of everything on Duval Street. Smoke on the porch and relax.

Re: Key West
Oh, BTW awesome cuban food at www.elmesondepepe.com Highly recommended!

My four favorites, three of which will put you on Duval: 1) Use to be the Hilton but is now the Westin 2) Pier House 3) La Concha - tallest building in Key West, right on Duval. Great view from roof top and bar located up there. Away from Duval: Doubletree For food, two favorites for fine dining: Louie's Backyard Commodore Steakhouse For the best fish sandwich ever, Bo's. Just ignore the decor. For hanging out and drinking, any bar you like. During the day, love The Conch Republic. At night, seek out the music you like. For entertainment, don't forget to take in a drag show or two. You will die laughing. |

Re: Key West

Re: Key West
This is great guys!! Got some work to do later today!!
Price isn't a HUGE deal, but would like to keep it reasonable. Being a big ParrotHead, We will be stopping at Captain Tony's and Louie's Backyard for a couple drinks. I'm looking forward to watching some hand rolled cigars and smoking some great cigars down there!! |

As far as places to stay, we have stayed at The Key Lime Inn before. Great little place and easy walking distance to Duval St. |
Re: Key West
I used to get an efficiency at the Blue Marlin off Duval for about 70 bucks a night and liked it. Small pool and clean room with a kitchen I never used.
Crash at a friends house now who moved there to be a musician. |
Re: Key West
Ok, so we just spent a few hours looking at a bunch of places that you guy suggested, as well as others we found. We have a delema though now. Our favorite so far is Parrot Key: on the beach, relatively cheap but it's a little over 2 miles from town.
The pier is also catching our eye: on the beach, but water view is a little over our budget so we'd get teh regular room, right at the end of Deval St. and looks really nice. Or La Concha: right in the middle of everything, but not on the water. So now we just have to weigh our options out and see what is more important to us. Thanks for all the help so far!!! |

The Pier House is nice. Wife loved it. Has a small man made beach, tiki bar, nice overall Keys like atmosphere. The La Concha is so, so neat. Really cool looking interior with a throwback feel. The rooms are very nice with an old vintage look also. The property has a bar on the roof for sunset viewing. It has a very small pool but neat as it is located on a roof top also but 3rd or 4th floor - don't remember now as was too drunk on mojitos. BTW, they have awesome mojitos there. A few drinks and sunset on that rooftop will be memorable for sure. Both of those are awesome. The fact that La Concha is not on the water would not bother me as in exchange, you are dead center on Duval. Key West is not known for beaches anyway. Either of these, you cannot go wrong and will absolutely love it. |

Re: Key West
We both understand that the beaches aren't like the beaches up here in New England. But I guess our question is: Is it better to have the water front view or to be in the middle of everything? We will be right on the beach for our wedding in Key Largo, so I don't really need to be on the beach, but we are looking for a memorable stay there.

Re: Key West
Another place to eat:
Breakfast: Blue Heaven (fanstastic food and great breads which you can order to go) Anytime: Half Shell Raw Bar (great seafood on the cheap...the locals hang out here) |
Re: Key West
La Concha.
Right in the middle of everything, but quiet. They have a pool if you wanna get wet. Don't miss the rooftop sunset, even if you end up not staying there. They'll still let you up there. I wouldn't stay anywhere else after staying there my last visit. Quote:

Re: Key West
My fiance booked the hotel last night. She picked the Southernmost Hotel. Not the one on the beach but it's right across the street I guess. We got the suite with a balcony and a kitchenete for about $200 less for the 5 nights than La Concha for it's basic room. It's right at the end of Duval St. and one block away form the southern most point. We will definitely be checking out all the places that you guys have listed to eat and drink. So thanks for all the help, and please keep listing places to eat and see!!! We can't wait to get down there!!!!!

Re: Key West
Man, I need to unsubscribe to this thread, I'm jealous!
I had to cancel my reservations I had for week after next at the Big Pine Fishing Lodge due to dad breaking his leg at the hip. For some reason the orthopedic surgeon doesn't think riding 500 miles and then balancing in a bout that is bobbing around would be very therapeutic for my 82 year old dad:D. Oh well, I REALLY hope you have a great time! Seriously. The Keys are a great place to unwind and relax. Congrats as well! |
Re: Key West
Two restaurants that are not to be missed.
Pardon the monkey, it was in a collage of pictures for my daughter. :) Grumpy's is closed for good. :td http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/1261/dsc00613w.jpg http://img682.imageshack.us/img682/7635/dsc00536u.jpg http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/2921/dsc00530d.jpg |
Re: Key West
Got back from the Keys on Monday. Got married in Key Largo on 8/14. Spent 5 days there, then 5 days in Key West.
What a great time we had. Just a couple of notes, the Roof Top bar at La Concha was closed, we aren't sure if it was just for that night or for good. didn't seem to be anything at the bar. The Western Union ship i guess had been dry docked for the last few months and was JUST put into the water for testing. I got to see it but it wasn't sailing. We went on DANGER for a "Wind and Wine" sunset cruise. Highly recommend this cruise:tu. For us New Englanders, the Lazy Gecco was a great spot. "The Southern Most Red Sox Nation". Was able to watch the Pats game and the Red Sox game on Thursday night. Fort Jefferson was a great trip and worth the money to go to the Least Visited National PArk in the country. Great snorkeling and a great fort. If any one does go out there, please look in the water for my wedding band :td We had a great time but have come to the conclusion that if we were to visit again, spend a couple days in Key Largo to wind down, head to Key West to party and then go back to Key Largo to chill out again. Thanks to everyone that gave us suggestions. We would have hit every place but just didn't have time and didn't eat breakfast once the entire trip!!!! O'yeah, came back with TONS of cigars!!! :tu-(P |
Re: Key West
Glad to hear you had a good time...sorry to hear about the wedding ring...I'm still looking for my class ring in the ocean off Hollywood Beach...and that was circa 1964...

Re: Key West
Edit: doh, old post!?! LOL
But glad to see you stayed at the Southernmost... I stayed at the Southernmost on the Beach and loved it. It helped we had ocean front rooms though :) |
