Taylor Pork Roll

I could have sworn that there was a thread on this already; but I guess I was mistaken.

Been hearing friends with Jersey connections talk about this mystery meat for years; but not being from Jersey, I've never seen it. Well, I was at my local Kroger here in north Texas last night, standing in line at the deli counter, and what did I see? A 3-pound log of Taylor Pork Roll. Texted DavenportESQ to verify that it should be thick cut, and ordered a third pound to sample.

After a brief tutorial over Facebook last night on how to properly prepare (don't forget the notches or it'll curl) and construct the TPR and egg sandwich (Toast, Ketchup, Pork Roll, Egg, Cheese, Toast), I had my hand at it this morning.

To all my Jersey brothers and sisters who I have challenged or mocked for their exuberant defenses of this log of porky goodness, please accept my sincerest apologies. ;s

Taylor Pork Roll is, indeed, hella good. :dr I was gonna take a picture of the sandwich all constructed; but it was too tasty for me to pause and get the camera. :r

So glad this stuff is available locally. :wo

Yes! Taylor Pork Roll is really good! Orginally from the Philadelphia area so i'm a big fan! Also, you need to try some scrapple if you haven't already. :)

Yes, Taylor Ham (Pork Roll) is a staple of New Jersey.. it never gets old, it never gets disgusting, and i really cant say much else.. I wouldnt want to live here without it (jersey needs all the help it can get), LOL

Ummm! Taylor Ham. There's a great little bagel shop in Woodbridge we stop by. Taylor ham egg and cheese on an everything bagel. That's heaven, and about 60 points..... :D

Taylor Ham and Egg, with Cheese, on a Kaiser.
Hmmm....Hmmm....GOOD!!!
When I first moved to Florida, it was not easy to find.
I freaked out.
Now, it is everywhere.

BTW, I prefer it cut a bit thicker as opposed to thinner. Much more tasty that way.

I grew up in NJ and my family used to make Pork Roll. All I can say is: YUCK

I never liked the stuff. It's been years since I've tried it though. Maybe it's worth another try.

That must be the thread I've been thinking of. I searched on multiple sites (not "the site that shall not be named") for a thread and then convinced myself that I made it all up. :r

For the record, I just had my second sandwich of the day. :dr :D

You inspired me... I had eggs over-easy with a couple slices of pork roll. Delicious! :dr

*Around me in S. Jersey we always referred to it as pork roll. It wasn't until I went to Rutgers NB for college that I heard it referred to by its brand name, Taylor.

It goes by all different names depending on where in the state you are.

Growing up in Clifton, we called it Taylor Ham. Out of the area, the trick is to find a place that sells Boar's Head products - they're the distributor.

Ditto. Always was just "pork roll". Always with cheese, always on a kaiser roll. Always delicious.

There still is one on the OC boardwalk in New Jersey . I've been loving pork roll as long as I can remember . There is also a less spicy version made by Taylor that is labeled as "Trenton Pork Roll" . Scrapple is just absolutely awful ! As for bad drivers here in my home state - Have you ever seen the way Pennsylvanians drive in Jersey ? That must be whats been witnessed . Unless you drive a Subaru , then you're just a target ! :r

We see a lot of those baby-sh!t yellow plates up here, in a college town about a half-hour from Cooperstown. Usually shortly after seeing them I'm wishing I had the car from that old Spy Hunter video game... :r

Re: Taylor Pork Roll

To be honest I dont really like taylor ham. When I order it out they always under cook it and slice it too thin. If I go out to a diner I'll get bacon but if were all drinkin at a friends house and were all making sandwiches I love well done TH, bacon, eggs, cheese, and SPK.

I hate to say it but as a NJ native Bacon>Taylor Ham:(

Its distributed by Boar's Head Meats. Find a grocery that works with this distributor or you're S.O.L.

Its a little like summer sausage, made of pork....

Mmmmmm. Had a pork roll, egg, and cheese sandwich on a buttered hard roll this morning. Best breakfast in the world to me! :)

For those ex-pat Jerseyans craving some, you may want to check out this site I stumbled across a few months ago. I've never ordered from them nor do I have any affiliation with them.

Taylor Ham is the "brand name" porkroll, and in my mind, the best. A cheaper bacon alternative, it was the blue collar Egg Mcmuffin of yore. Traditional and satisfying as it was, i always found porkroll's bite a bit strong for breakfast and a delicate egg.

I find it best suited to be browned on the grill, topped with cheese, and dropped onto a hamburger. Beats the baconburger hands down - do try it!

(extra points for smoking the whole pork roll first...)
