Recommend me a Patel
Hey guys, I've been in the mood to try new stuff lately and I'm clueless about Rocky Patel. I know he has a ton of different lines and my neighborhood B&M seems to carry most of them. I smoked an Edge years ago that was decent, but my tastes have changed quite bit since then.
I like smooth but full flavored natural wrapper cigars. Salty, leathery, not a lot of sweetness. Cuban Bolivar and Partagas are my go-to smokes but I also like full flavored Dominicans like LFD and Opus X. Super spicy, nose-burning Nicaraguans are my pet peeve. If it burns my face off, it's not a premium cigar in my opinion. so, that being said, what should I try? Price isn't an issue since I only plan to buy 2 or 3. Like I said, my local shop seems to have a big selection of RPs but if you recommend something super rare or discontinued I probably won't take the time to search it down. thanks in advance! |
Re: Recommend me a Patel
RP Sumatra if you can find them...great smoke. But the Renaisance is also a tasty stick.

Find an Olde World with about 4 years of age on it or a Decade from the original release... Pure bliss!

Re: Recommend me a Patel
Decade Toro or the Summer Collection 2008 are good choices, though I doubt the SC08 will be in stock at your local B&M.

All the great ones have been listed. Vintage 90 & 92, Patel Brothers, Ren., OWR Maddie and Decade.

Re: Recommend me a Patel
First, I am not a big fan of RP's cigars. They are OK, but for the same money, I can get stuff that I like better. With that said, I was really blown away by the new Patel Bros. I would not have tried it were it not included in a cigar of the month sampler from a local B&M. I will probably buy a box and I highly recommend them.

Re: Recommend me a Patel
Another vote for the Patel bros. I will definitely look for these as well as the rest of your suggestions and let you guys know what I pick out.

A Very reliable source tells me the Renaissance is the same thing as the Edge Sumatra with a different priming on the wrapper. :D |
Re: Recommend me a Patel
The Sungrown is the best blend with his name on it, followed by the OWR maduro, which can be had for much cheaper at CI labeled as the RP Xout Liga C maduro.
Damn good blends and two of my go to's for sure.... I don't mess with much of his other smokes as I can't and won't keep up. |
Re: Recommend me a Patel
So far, after trying many R.P.s I like the Vintage 92 best. But only in the Perfecto size. The larger sizes and even the Petite Corona dont have as good flavor as the Perfecto. This is an awesome morning smoke w/ Coffee too.
I liked the Decade too. Very nice flavor but the flavor did not change at all through the entire stick. I wolud still like to try the Edge Sumatra. I did not like the other Edges. |

I like the OWR and Sungrowns too!

I complained to my bud about the wrapper leaf of the Renaissance being too thin and easily damaged. He explained the lower priming ( earlier harvesting of a younger, thinner wrapper leaf ) was a possible cause. |
Re: Recommend me a Patel
The Rocky Patel Summer 2009 is probably one of the top five cigars I've ever had. I can't buy enough.

Re: Recommend me a Patel
I like the Edge Corojos - toros and torpedos.

Re: Recommend me a Patel
"Primers"" as they are referred to can be seen {link removed} harvesting tobacco. Harvesting refers to removing the mature ripe leaves from the plant. When the leaves begin to turn yellow, it is time to harvest them. Harvesting tobacco can be done by machine or by hand. These workers have chosen to do it by hand. Tobacco that is harvested by hand is either primed or stalk-cut. Bright-leaf tobacco that is hand harvested is primed. Priming involves picking leaves as they ripen. Leaves ripen and are harvested from the bottom of the stalk upward. Priming requires several harvests because the leaves ripen at different rates. Some growers use a pre-harvest chemical which causes yellowing of the leaves so more can be harvested at one time.
