Re: Woodworking again

Time to resurrect this thread. I'm starting to get into woodworking and thought this would be a good place to get some tips and tricks.

A while back a buddy of mine gave me some lumber that was just hanging out in his garage when he bought the house. The previous owner said that the wood was close to 100 years old. anyways, i had no idea what I would do with it because it looked pretty bad. today I decided to run a couple pieces through the planer and see what happened. I have to say, I'm pretty pleased.

Before:

After:http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/...ps678e98b8.jpg

After:

and here's a small piece that I cut off the end:
http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/...ps83e3c9fc.jpg

I still have no idea what to do with it. I'm sure I'll think of something.

Re: Woodworking again

Also, not really a hard project, but I'm making a magnetic bottle opener to put in my squadron's bar. I used a piece of red oak and stained it red mahogany. I'll be routing out a hole in the back of the wood towards the bottom and putting a magnet in it, a pretty powerful one. When you open the bottle and pull it away, the cap falls and gets caught by the magnet.

http://i1135.photobucket.com/albums/...pse3f910af.jpg

I might also use a piece of that really old wood.

I decided to make my daughter a water toy table.
https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot...25840158_n.jpg

The wife thought the sides weren't high enough so I just put some plywood strips in and it actually made the container fit a lot better.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.n..._4108920_n.jpg

I hit it with a coat of water sealer and I'm going to paint it and clear coat it this weekend.

Beautiful.
I don't have the dexterity to turn pens. But I've wanted to add an indexer (lathe) to my CNC machine since I got it. There's so much you can do in making balusters and ormanent in the round. It's super cool. :tu

Makita LS1221 12-Inch Compound Miter Saw is the best well-known miter saw brand as known to me so far..It has powerful 15.0 AMP motor delivers 4,000 RPM.. It is strong square and very powerful .The cut was perfect, right out of the box, and continues to be so even now. The blade was a better quality than what I thought would be on it and it still gives me the cleanest miter cuts I've ever seen.

Re: Woodworking again

What sort of joinery did you use to fasten the shelves to the back spine of that corner cabinet?

Also, I don't see any edge voids. Is that solid wood or a veneered ply?

Fordman4ever 02-08-2015 02:02 AM

Re: Woodworking again

i used screw and glue. It's all solid wood except for the bead board i used for the sides.

Re: Woodworking again

Nice work.

Does anyone here have any Japanese woodworking tools? I just got back from a TDY there and I picked up a Gyokucho razor saw. It's a Japanese pull saw and they are a lot cheaper if you buy them in Japan.

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTYwMFgxNj...TrWyo/$_57.JPG

These are $45 on Amazon and I picked mine up for $28 with an extra blade.

shilala 02-24-2015 10:34 AM

Re: Woodworking again

I have a two-sided one like that, Earl. I have one with a had back like yours, too.
The one I use most is a folding one that'd put you in the mind of a felco pruning saw. The blade is a little thicker and stiffer.
I just use them for notching and cutting tabbed parts out of sheets.
Love em. :tu
