Gurkha hatin
Ok
. I've seen it here from a few. A lot of Gurkha hate. Personally I don't get it. I do, however, want to know why. I won't try to convince anyone or tell them their opinion is wrong. Just want to know why you don't like the whole brand. What you tried etc. Or conversely what you like if you're a Gurkha ho like me. Me. I like a med to full flavor smoke. I like that many Gurkha cigars are very unique and not just another same old same old smoke. They are typically very rich in their flavors and usually go very well through the nose (snork). I've tried basically all sizes of. Grand reserve natural and maduro Grand age Master select natural and maduro Estate selection vintage shaggy Doble maduro Centurian XX Royal brigade Royal salute Anniversary natural and maduro Triple ligureo Black dragon and dragonfire Blue steel Probably more I can't think of |

Re: Gurkha hatin
Great topic! Ever since I have joined the cigar forums this has been a common trend among them and I have been wondering this very question myself. As far as Gurkhas go i will stay neutral as I have had some I enjoy and some not so much.
|
Re: Gurkha hatin
I have smoked many Gurkhas as I became a "serious" cigar smoker. I think some taste like dirt, and some taste worse. So that is my "why".

Re: Gurkha hatin
They taste like ass.
|
Re: Gurkha hatin
I have not made my mind up yet. I have only had a couple so far.

Re: Gurkha hatin
To quote someone I have the utmost respect for "I have smoked enough cigars from the brands I have sworn off of to have my own educated opinion, and make no apologies for those opinions."

Re: Gurkha hatin
I think I've had 1 good Gurkha. What bothers me about that line is that you've got a ton of blends that seemingly go nowhere. Rocky Partel, which does something smilair, at least has some decent cigars.
|
Re: Gurkha hatin
I have had a few, although certainly not all of their lines, and I have enjoyed a few, and some, not so much (like the shaggy :pu). However, If I like it, I'll smoke it. to each their own. If I like and no one else does, then all the more for me.

I honestly neither like nor dislike Gurkhas.
Of course, I've never had any desire to smoke one either. |

I know that when you posted the "B&M vs. The Big Guys" thread, you admitted that you were trying to stir up some controversy.
Now that that thread has died off, I imagine you sitting at your computer, giggling, thinking, "How can I stir the pot next'. Close? Be honest. ;) |

I have tried enough of them to know which ones I like and which ones I don't... and like I said in the other gurkha thread, at least they are better than the Rocky patel garbage... |
Re: Gurkha hatin
I have tried several
Have to say they were from unimpressed to truly not good. I had a shaggy footed one once, reminded me of vacuum cleaner bags, toe jam, freeze dried vomit and belly button lint. I have smoked a few that were passable but not something I'd buy again. What I really dislike about them Is their marketing and how they boast about how great they are. It's just way over the top and that's enough to keep me from buying them. Same thing goes for me with CAO I have had a few I liked but none I'd buy a box of But hey if you like them by all means smoke them and enjoy them.

Re: Gurkha hatin
The haters here have only specifically mentioned one cigar. The rest very vague which doesn't give me a why beyond personal preference. Now first of all I am not trying to stir up the pot. And second. I have many cigars that I do not personally prefer. But I still can appreciate the good construction and quality tobacco. I don't just hate on them.
I guess to be more specific. Why the venom? Why hated so much more than "eh not my type" |

Re: Gurkha hatin
When I first started getting into cigars, before I found places like this, I bought into the catalog hype pumping up Gurkha as the end all-be all of cigars. I had a couple that I enjoyed, but the more I got into the hobby, and the more my taste developed, I became unimpressed with the Gurkhas I tried. There are much better smokes out there for my money. I don't want to pay for all that advertising.
I'm sure there are smokes in the endless stream of blends that I may like, but the price point doesn't make me want to go hunting. I still want to try a Nepalese Warrior eventually though. No hate here, just been turned off by the brand in general. |
Re: Gurkha hatin
Most of em i've had I liked. I've had several. For the most part, I don't think they justify the price. I mean... $8 for a robusto? I'm sorry, the Black Dragon is not worth that much dough. The Warlord is a great smoke for $10. The G5, not worth $10.
I would smoke them again and will purchase more when my local B&M has another event but I won't pay MSRP for 'em. |
Re: Gurkha hatin
I think it goes without saying, i think it's a swell brand.

1. Many feel the cigars taste bad (myself included - burnt earth/dirt, not my cup of tea) 2. The descriptions of them being "the Rolls Royce of cigars" , the huge amount of cigar lines, the "most expensive cigar in the world", copying the Cuban RE bands, the CI descriptions, the high prices....but then there are always some to be found at discounted prices, etc. etc. etc. And I don't think it's hatred, just 'easy/fun to make fun of". It's like if the AMC Pacer marketed itself as the "ultimate driving machine" and came in 500 different variations, but all similarly not so great. :2 |

The best advice on dealing with the devil is.....
don't. Smoke what you like. Respect others right to do the same. Re: Gurkha's? Exploration of cigars likes and dislikes is an evolutionary experience. You don't realize what you don't know until you learn more. Many, upon learning more, realize things. |
Re: Gurkha hatin
My :2 I can spend less on things that I know I like and don't make me want to :pu Oh btw, thanks Don for the sampler that included a Gurkha

Early on, I smoked some RP vintage. I thought were too harsh for no reason. I would probably enjoy one now, so I should go back and try it. I just know there are cigars that will deliver for me (for the same price or less), and that's what I usually pick up. For the record, I'm also a CasaMagna "hater". Wasted money on these three times with poor results. :( |

Smoked whatever the churchill barberpole version is...tasted like air. |

Smoked dirt... tasted like a Gurkha.

Re: Gurkha hatin
And for the record before the question comes....I played football. So yes, I've tasted dirt. :r

Re: Gurkha hatin
Doble Maduro -- inconsistent in flavor and construction. First one I smoked was good, the next 3 in a row tasted funny and were rolled poorly.
Nepalese Warrior -- same story. Smoked 1 that was good, and a couple more that tasted completely different from the first one and also burned horribly. Expedition -- same story. Every cigar tasted different. Connecticut Reserve -- smoked through a 5 pack, they were OK but I've tasted better mild CT wrap cigars that cost a buck and change. Centurian -- I actually smoked 3 or 4 of these and liked them. But not enough to get any more. Do you see a pattern? Poor consistency in blending + Poor consistency in construction + Ridiculous amounts of BS and hype = I hate Gurkha. :D |
Re: Gurkha hatin
Good morning Mr. Legend,
I do not hate Gurhkas. There are very few things in life I can honestly say I hate. To hate requires a certain energy and dedication of resources to right a wrong when one's, or one's friends and / or family's, rights or liberties have been affected. There is so much in life that affects us, our friends and family that to waste saying I hate a certain cigar brand is energy poorly invested for me. I have tried the Nepalese Warrior, a 5er, and it was a poor stick in my opinion as it was a inferior version of the RP 90 for me (poorly rolled all 5). I would have said bland earth instead of dirt but that is part of the beauty of this hobby - I taste bland earth and my neighbor taste dirt! I also tried the barber pole version, again a 5er to be fair, and it had the light taste of air. At the price point for many of their cigars I can get some extremely nice CC's - some LGC and Montes come to mind or in the non-CC world I can find Padron Principes and many of Mr. Pepins cigars. That is why I choose to not purchase Gurhka sticks and I believe I fall into what Mr. Klugman has said below. Good luck on your next thread! Respectfully, Travis Quote:

Re: Gurkha hatin
'Nough said. I could post my experiences with them, but quite frankly, this thread shouldn't provide enough interest to further its post count for me. I think the pot has been stirred, scorched the contents, and served to the masses. Time to let it soak in the sink with some harsh cleaner in the bottom. ;) Or, conversely, the post whoring could begin and just look silly. I suppose either is okay with me, and the LEGEND will certainly be gratified his thread continues to live on life support.

Re: Gurkha hatin
Can't say I had a good one but I won't go bashing them. My B & M is one of 2 Gurkha distributors in NJ according to the owner and he swears by them. Naturally he does because his Titan costs $22.00 and he always tells me, "The Gurkha's you see from CI or Thompsons are rolled for the discount shops, try these, they are the real deal". I dont have the heart to tell him I think he is full of **** because he is really a nice guy. I reach for the Fuentes or the Oliva Masterblends when I am there.

Funny... you forgot the Gurkha Legend... Legend!!!:D
I actually I have smoked a number of Gurkhas and now I know what the "mushroom flavor" is!!! I used to see mushroom mentioned in reviews and always wondered what that meant. Smoked a few Gurkha... now I know!!! I enjoy the Gurkha Legend, Legend!!!:tu |
Re: Gurkha hatin
I've had some great tasting Gurkhas like the Avenger, G3, Shaggy, Genghis Khan, and Ancient Warrior. That being said I have a few that I didn't enjoy much. I agree for the most part that Gurkha needs to settle down on the multitude of blends and settle on the main sellers.

Re: Gurkha hatin
this is the most worthless thread since... well, since the last gurkha blow-up over at that other place.
sorry, just my opinon. |
