My son is fascinated by cigars!

Okay, since I've been smoking my son has been asking questions about cigars. He occasionally gets a whiff of them and always replies I wish I could smoke a cigar when he does. I know he watches everything I do and to my dismay he copies alot of it. He even asks to do the sniff test on the cigars before I light them like I do. He doesn't do it all the time, but occasionally will ask if he can sniff it before I light it. I used to chew tobacco and he was intrigued by that until one day he found my tin in the car and filled his mouth when we were packing for a trip. We came out and he had chew and drool all over the front of him as he was trying to get it out and was drooling all over himself. After that he wasn't concerned with my dip and it wasn't a big deal for him.

When I was my son's age (9) my dad smoked cigars with his buddies occasionally. The only recollection I have of this is because I remember distinctly the time I bugged him to try one and he told me I had to smoke the whole thing, once I started I knew it was bad. I smoked it down to the nub, was green and sick. I never remember cigars after that day because I wasn't interested in them I'm assuming.

I've thought of doing this with my son as I think it would solve the problem I have. I won't do it because I'd end up in trouble and the morality police would come down on me.

So I'm hoping that as I educate him properly, by answering his questions honestly and explaining what I'm doing that he will learn to respect them as I do and eventually when he's old enough make a choice if he wants to try them or not.

Anyone else have kids that are interested and curious like my son? How have you handled the questions.

Dont have kids but I think you have hit it on the head! Education and honesty is the best method in my opinion!

My daughter is 12 and she's always after me to smoke a cherry cigar. One of these days I'll relent, but all the no's are what will make it fun for her in the future.
She'll think she's totally badass when she gets to take a puff. :)

Haha good point. When that day comes...she will be very happy!

Re: My son is fascinated by cigars!

My nephew was always interested in cigars, my niece too to a smaller extent. She would love to flick the ash.
When he was young, about 4, he'd beg me for a puff. I just couldn't say no. But I told him that the way you smoke a cigar is to blow into it so the smoke comes out the end. He'd put the cigar in his mouth and blow hard, his little eyes almost crossed to see the smoke billowing out the foot.
The most memorable cigar I've ever had was one New Year's morning in the shadow of Mt. Washington in NH. It was 15 below at dawn and I was out on the balcony at an inn we were staying at. I heard a little knock on the slider door, he was inside grinning. I let him have two "puffs". The look of joy on his little face as we "shared" this cigar remains vivid in my mind today. It was a CC, Punch corona.
He's now 18 and on his way to college in Florida. I can't wait to take him to some cool places in FL where we can smoke a good one.

Always as he was growing up, I told him countless times that cigars are for adults only. After the age of 5 or so he never asked for a puff again.
I'm glad for that because I'm known as the "Bad Uncle" influence wise. If he had been caught smoking cigars at age 12 I'd have been in big trouble!
I think it's very important to reinforce that smoking is a choice that adults make. A choice that can have some serious consequences.

I have two stepsons, one 18 and the other just turned 12. The 18 year old came over the night of his 18th birthday and smoked a cigar with me, much to the dismay to his mother. It doesn't bother her that I smoke, but seeing her son was a different story. Now the 12 year old, that's all I ever hear. He can't wait to smoke a cigar. Always asks me what I am smoking and he has learned quite a few brands and sizes. When he hits 18, I'll let him smoke one with me and let him decide if he wants to continue.

I can relate to your son, I always followed my dad in to the humidor and would enjoy sitting outside when he was smoking cigars. I was about 13. There was always the erge to try one but I was to scared to ask. at 18.5 I was living on my own and tried it for my self and now am hooked. Now my dad looks to me when picking out cigars, funny how the tide turns. Don't know what to tell you pal but enjoy your kid having an interest in what you do.

Re: My son is fascinated by cigars!

I have a young son age 7 and daughter 4...They think the cigars stink which I actually prefer. My father use to smoke cigarettes...4 packs of non filter Pall Malls a day! He smoked in the house, in the car, at any resturaunt, anywhere...it was like I couldn't get a breath of fresh air. The worst was almost every year we would pile in the old station wagon (70's and 80's every family had a wagon)and drive from Ohio to Florida for vacation....all the way there with the windows up and the AC on...my father literally would get the cigarette down to almost burning his lips and immediately lite up another off that! Probably took 10 years off my life. Both my brothers and sister would smoke in the house along with my dad. I can't believe that at about 16 I started to sneek his pall malls and smoke them...did that on and off until I smoked my first good cigar. I can't believe they call that stuff in cigarettes tobacco....bummed a camel off a buddy a few months ago and couldn't even finish it...tasted so nasty. I love my cigars but I hope my kids stay off of them until they are much older...my stash is locked! :D

Re: My son is fascinated by cigars!

If he is around the smoke, then it would not be that much different to actually be smoking (especially if he is around multiple smokers). If you let him try it and he does not turn green, then what? Sure its bad, but so is everything else we do in life (young or old). If it were cigs I would think differently. Take him camping or do a father/son thing and give him one or let him try. I am a father of a 9 year old, so dont ask me what I would do!!! I tried smoking at an early age, well I would sneak it. At 14 I was full blown chewing and tried cigars. My Son hangs out at some of the lounges and has even had the oppertunity to roll a couple.

I don't get to see my son as often as I should. Last year we had a herf in Jacksonville and he went with me, and we had a blast. We smoked lots of cigars, and he got to meet some of the other botls, DrHalle and Starchild are the only one's that made the jump to CA. His girlfriend told me some time later that he really enjoyed it, cause even though everyone there was quite a bit older than he, he was treated as an adult. We are hopefully going to do another one soon and I hope he can go with me again since he had so much enjoyment the last time. He will be 20 in a few days and it's hard now to figure where the years went. It only seems like yesterday he was a baby.

Didn't your son sign up here at one point Greg? Good times :tu

I hadn't really thought about it, but I only smoke when I'm not around my daughter. She's only one, but I don't really know how I will handle it when she gets older.

He signed up on the other site, not long before we left. I have told him about CA, but he didn't have internet for a while and now he does again I think. I'll have to remind him again.

I have a 3 yr old who shows some curiosity about them when I'm looking through my humidor to choose something. He insists on smelling every single stick. I often ask him if he likes how they smell or what he thinks the cigar smells like but its pretty hard to get an honest answer.

Something to think about-if and when you decide to have children, buy a special box from your child's birth year and age them till the the time is right to share the experience if possible.:2

Re: My son is fascinated by cigars!

I know my kids are interested in cigars because I am. My son will most likiely smoke, and my daughter will think favorably of men who smoke. However I've taught them that smoking is purely for adults, they would never think to ask me for some (at least they have not so far). In fact I don't let them sit near me when I smoke.

Re: My son is fascinated by cigars!

this is a prime example of the fact that our kids look up to us, try to emulate us and want to do the things that we do. Its in these early stages of life that the most impressions are made on our youth, either positive or negative. This is the reason that most adult problems are traced back to some childhood learned behavior. They want to walk like we walk, talk like we talk, wear what we wear, go where we go, do what we do. If you dont like how your kids are acting or what their doing you usually have just have to look in the mirror to see where it came from. Now having said this, i have a 6 year old son and he sees me smoke cigars, and he is curious, i try to avoid making a deal out of it when he is around. Im hoping that this is one of my habits that he does not try to emulate until he is old enough for me to properly introduce him to the fine leaf. So just be aware of what you do in front of your kids, because your most likely going to see it again.

Re: My son is fascinated by cigars!

I think my son takes in interest in what ever I am into. I know he is always asking questions about cigars or different beers. I don't smoke around him, he hasn't ever seen me smoke a cigar. I am sure he has smelled it on me for just long enough to come in the house and shower but other then that he may just think I collect them. I try and answer all his questions honestly.

I was grew up living with my grandparents. I still remeber smelling my Grandfathers cigars and pipes. I even remeber him letting me pick out cigars for him out of his humi. To bad he stopped and got rid of thet humi.

When he is old enough I am sure he will ask and I will let him try one or 3 to figure out if he wants to smoke cigars. He will have to make the choice, but until then I just keep doing what I am doing and try to be honest about it.

Wow, I'm impressed! Alot of good responses here. I'm glad that it's not abnormal for my son to be so intrigued by them. He is full of questions every time I light one up or even get some and throw them in my travel humi. I'm sure when he is 18 that he'll be way ahead of the game if he decides he wants to partake. He is like a sponge and soaks up everything I tell him and can remember the most mundane facts that I let slip by. There is still hope for him, unlike his old man!

I wish I had gotten the advice and put a box away of something good when he was born, but i'm 9, almost 10 years too late for that now!

I really should post this Mardi Gras pic I have of the 2007 Mardi Gras downtown NO for Bacchus parade. We had been there alot of the day, and this guy from out in California was near us, and we talked and smoked much of the day. I had been entertaining his daughter, 4-5 or so, for much of the day, cause I didn't have to catch up with friends or sightsee or marvel in the fun of it all, I was just sitting and smoking and drinking. Plus of course, all kids love me. So she is sitting there watching me light and smoke a BBF.
When it is going, she says, "I want a taste." I figure her dad probably let her
at home from time to time anyway, so she took a couple draws and smiled and said, "It's good." She was right. But it's a cute picture and her parents were who KNOWS where.

my boy is about to turn 4 (next month). About 3 months ago he saw me rotating my stock and saw me smelling them... he asked to smell one and I said OK (picked a Padilla Miami)...

he got a funny look on his face and I asked "what does it smell like?" and he said...

"Chicken poop"

LOL!!!

Never asked me about them again hahah!

I say let your son have an occasional puff. It wont hurt him. When I was 7 or 8 I used to have a sip of my Dads red wine on the odd occasion and I turned out just fine. I drink about four glasses of red a week - hardly an alcoholic...

Well the difference is that these days you will go to jail for doing that. Its called child neglect, child endangerment and child abuse, along with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. I used to sip my dads beer when I was young, fond memories, just dont let somebody see you these days and put it on youtube. The Sheriff will be at your door quickly.
