Taking care of your Sinus Cavity

I smoked quite a few cigars at the “All California Herf” on the 28th.
Well Sunday the 29th I had a semi clogged nose.
I have used this product when having a cold to relieve congestion and it has worked very well.

http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/n...7/DSC02716.jpg

Let’s face it there are some inherit risks in smoking cigars, and to be on the safer side of smoking and snorking (retro-haling) this is a product I can recommend to others. This is just a saline sinus rinse with warm water. Along with this I do a good cleaning of my mouth with brushing and rinsing.

This might be something my S/BOTL might find of value. Just my :2 on care for your sinus cavity.

Blessings,
STS:ss

Yea, I bought a Netti Pot a couple years ago and never took it out of the box. I should give my sinus cavity a good blast.

It helps with my sinus pressure and makes it possible for me to breath when going through a sinus infection... :D

I've used the rinse as well with good results. Thanks for mentioning this. I was just feeling a bit stuffy, so I'll do a rinse before my evening smoke :tu

Very nice! I have to irrigate my sinuses if I snork more that a couple times in a night. It definitely helps clean things out and keep things happy. :tu

Depends on the product you use. with mine it is an irrigation solution that rinses out the entire sinus cavity. Takes a little getting use to.
But the junk that comes out.....nasty.

Saline rinse changed my life... really. Before I started using it, I would wake up several times a night with congested sinuses, and would only smoke cigars on weekends because the sinus consequences were so dire.

I stared using saline rinses and I can now smoke whenever I want with no effect on my sinuses and sleep like a baby every night.

Haven't tried any sinus rinses, but my doc hooked me up with some Nasonex. Works great and my wife can sleep peacefully through the night without my snoring from chronic congestion (with or without snorking.)

i use a netti pot almost every day.

I used to get a sinus infection a couple times a year. I have yet (knocks on wood) to get one since i started using it.

Re: Taking care of your Sinus Cavity

I use a neti pot with great results. Similar but you aren't squirting anything up your nose. You put the pot in one nostril, tilt your head and let it run out of the other nostril. Clears out all kinds of nasty stuff. There are more advanced techniques to get it deeper into the sinus cavities but the basic tilt/drip does a good job.

Re: Taking care of your Sinus Cavity

One of the local BOTLs had a massive clogged sinus problem...

As he is a SWAT team member at one of the local prisons, he has access to industrial strength pepper-spray...

It worked for him.... :r :r

Here is what he posted about his experience:

As some of you may know I suffer from Migraine headaches. Haven't had one for about two years now! Knock on wood!! I still get the visual precursors or the off balance precursor but no headache. Well after the CC herf I notice my throat was sore. I thought perhaps 2 churchills might be to blame but no! I had caught a cold! Sore throat and the like. So today Tim comes over and I smoke a couple of sticks and that brings up all the oysters hanging about! A good thing but the sinus pain was leading to a migraine....

What to do...Back to work and really don't want to take four 12.5 hour shifts of to sit and be in pain....

SO I dragged out a close to empty Mark 9 OC gas canister. This is the size of a fire extinguisher not the little kid size units you see on cop duty belts. I had a left over unit from a training video I made on use and policy. This is a large scale unit. I knew it emptied nasal cavities like Rosy Odonald empties a hot tub party.

Figuring this was going to lead to a migraine I thought WTF. So I sat out back in the dark and turned this bad boy into my face from about two feet away.

Now lets put this into perspective. Getting hit with this crap full face eyes open on an inhale is akin to bobbing for apples in a deep fryer! Sure it won't kill you and for the first 12 seconds that is the problem not the good side of the coin. So with a full monk retraction of the boys I depressed the trigger.

Whoosh Apollo 4 takes off on my face. I drop the unit and fall off the steps and reach for the cool wet towel which providea about as much relief as a moist towelette in hell! I had caught a full inhale spray so the nasal passages were closing about as fast as your dates legs when she hers her Mom come in the room! I swear to god a ****ing smarty I tucked up there at age nine ejected fast enough to leave a mark on my thigh!!

Rolling in the cold wet grass and trying not to make too much noise the mucus discharge could have got me a role in Xtro!!!!

But 15 minutes later I was clear as a bell and having no sinus pain.

Here's hoping my testicles drop before the weekend!

I need a cigar!

+1. The little pot just dribbles through. You control the throttle on this thing and can blast with some pressure if you so desire. Everyone laughed at me (I was even unsure when I first bought it). Now my mom even swears my it. My wife still gives it a head shake, though.

I've been usin' a neti pot as well, but not cause I have gotten to smoke, unfortunately..

Actually, the pollution is so bad, I basically have been smoking 24 hours a day 7 days a week for the past month!

Or you could use some of those computer vaccuum attachments to a shop vac instead. No mess, no muss, no fuss.

Re: Taking care of your Sinus Cavity

I never saw this old post ... but was actually thinking about starting a thread on this myself.

I have chronic sinusitis, along with multiple allergies. Smoking doesn't seem to have that much of a negative effect honestly (I've gone weeks without smoking with no results), but my bad sinuses DEFINITELY have a negative effect on my smoking, and sometimes my palate just isn't trustworthy and I never know when that will be--very annoying!

I'm seeing an ENT now (professionally, that is ... my wife is an OBGYN, lol), and she "prescribed" Neli Med. She said before we looked at any crazy drugs or procedures, we'd try this. I've been using it every day for about 3 months and not only have I felt better, but my enjoyment of cigars has increased significantly!

However, for the last 3 weeks or so I've had what seems like a bad cold. My nasal passages close up (it's particularly bad at night) off and on and nothing seems to be working. It could just be a bad cold ... but that's a long freakin' cold! Grrr....

Re: Taking care of your Sinus Cavity

Nate,

Try using double the saline packets - ie: two of the blue ones for the 240ml bottle. It'll burn the first time you use it. but it might clear things up a bit. When I talked to a doctor about that I was told that you can do the double strength wash for about 10 days, then if nothing has improved, then it's something beyond what salt is capable of curing (or killing as the case may be) and other avenues or treatment need to be evaluated.

i spoke with acoupel of locals saying that they use the warm saline rinse and al lthis gunk comes out. I bought some and tried it and nothing came out... The peopel that told me that gunk came out were a bit older than i am (and they said that their being older may have something to do with it).. is that why? or am I just doing it wrong?

Yes Bobby, you're doing it wrong. You need to keep repeating it once every 30 minutes until something comes out. After that point, you will have broken down the mucus barrier that is blocking things from coming out and after that it will work properly. You could alternately speed up the process by mixing a few drops of Tabasco into the bottle and rinsing with that - that should usually do it in one shot.
