Least Bad Altadis?
I have some JR gift certificates that I want to use up, but the catch is I can only spend them on Altadis brands.
The list of Altadis handmades is here: http://www.altadisusa.com/cigar/handmade.asp I just wanted to get the Inmates opinions on which the best spend was. |
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
I vote for Monte White or Onyx Reserve.
|
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
My vote is for Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real No.2 or the Onyx Reserve...
|
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
I've had a couple of the Quinteros; they were pretty good.
|
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
Saint Luis Rey Serie g, Monte white or RyJ Vintage.
|
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
I like the RyJ Habana Reserve robustos. It's a nice, consistent stick, and is well-made.

Re: Least Bad Altadis?
I'd go with the SLR Serie G in maduro or the Maria Guerrero 444. Theres also Gispert if you're into the mild stuff. Monte Whites are good but their price tag is way out of line.
|
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
I'd look for a flavor profile that you like, then check the JR website to see if there are any brands on their "SChip" clearance. You may be able to get a little more bang for your buck. Consider a bunch of 5'ers instead of a box. That way you try different cigars. They do have some Altadis samplers that my qualify.

Re: Least Bad Altadis?
I vote for Omar Ortez Originals! :tu
|
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
The Monte cab's are very nice. Onyx are also a good one.
|
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
Wait till the embargo ends.... :)
|
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
I'm gonna second the RyJ Habana Reserve.
|
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
My vote goes to Montecristo White Label
Or Romeo y Julieta Vintage (Natural) Or Romeo y Julieta Habana Reserve Or San Luis Rey (but let 'em rest for a couple of years) |
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
Oh, BTW, JR's weekly special (through Wednesday) is a whole bunch of 5'ers, pick as many as you want & only pay one shipping rate of $2.50 instead of $2.50 for each one of them. Bunch of Altadis among them.
Could be the right time to cash in that certificate. |
Re: Least Bad Altadis?

My :2 RyJ Vintage SLR Serie G maduro Trinidad (one of the better NC versions of a CC) Omar Ortez Original for a full flavored, full powered smoke |
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
Te-Amo all the way. Nothing like a Mexican puro. :r
I would go with the Monte Whites if it was me. You could always sell the certificates at a discount to someone that might actually enjoy some of those cigars. |
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
Seems like you have some decent smokes to pick from!
|
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
Hoyo De Monterrey Epicure 1 Maddy
RyJ Habana Reserve SLR Series G (IMHO monte whites are horrible) |

I prefer this page. Hard to go wrong with any of these!

Re: Least Bad Altadis?
Montecristo Peruvian Maduros
|
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
Another vote for the RyJ Habana Reserve.
You may also want to consider the Da Vinci Masterpiece. I haven't tried them myself, but have heard they were decent. Even if they don't float your boat, they are cheap and offer a nice presentation making it a good giveaway cigar. They are on the s-chip sale list for $2.50 or less a stick. |
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
I enjoy the cabinet selections-
Montecristo Cabinet Selección Wrapper: Ecuadorian Sumatra Binder: Connecticut Broadleaf Filler: Dominican, Nicaraguan and Peruvian Romeo Y Julieta Cabinet Selección Wrapper: Cameroon Binder: Nicaraguan Filler: Dominican, Nicaraguan and Peruvian Por Larranaga Cabinet Selección Wrapper: Habano 2000 Binder: Nicaraguan Filler: Nicaraguan My :2 of your gift certificates. |

That one comes with a hilarious .wav commercial attached. |
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
I'm really impressed with the Montecristo Reserva Negra, the new maduro. A little pricey though. Omar is a fine smoke as well, and a little easier on the wallet.

Not much support for the H Upmann Vintage Cameroons. I love them.

Then again, I spend a LOT of time at JR's...... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y198/tobii3/004-1.jpg :r |
Re: Least Bad Altadis?
Least bad Altadis. :hm
I think that's kind of like asking where's the best place is to get a boil. :o Okay - an honest question deserves an honest answer. Here's my best shot. Once I received a free Altadis Montecristo White Torpedo. I think it was a sample. It wasn't bad in the sense it had some decent flavor and the construction was pretty good. While I won't judge any cigar based on a sample of one, and I wouldn't run out and buy more considering their price point, I'd probably smoke another if it were given to me. Now should the embargo end, ask me again about Altadis. |

Re: Least Bad Altadis?
I like Big Butts... Nevermind, you asked about cigars. You can't go wrong with the Monti Whites!

Re: Least Bad Altadis?
Thanks for all the good suggestions on this, I sat down and read the fine print a little better. Apparently, it's not just Altadis I'm restricted to - it's only the following four brands :(
Romeo Y Julieta H. Upmann Trinidad Montecristo Since Trinidad and H. Upmann just released new cigars, I might go with one of them. |

Re: Least Bad Altadis?
The Monte Reserva Negra is the best maduro (coming from Mad-Al) I've ever smoked. The San Luis Rey Series G Natural was an excellent smoke too.
