That cheap. Where did you get your ram from? Is Mac ram different from pc RAM? I want a mac! They look so cool.

My new laptop for christmas has 4 GB in it. My old one had 500mg. It does seem that RAM does an amazing job. Its nearly 5+ times faster, even though the processor is less than twice as fast. But, then mine is PC. I thought MACs were already supposed to be perfect....so how could you get faster than perfect?

Cheers to you on your RAM

I got it from Fry's.

I am not sure if the RAM is different on PC Laptops, I've never looked into it.

Ram is dirt cheap, I updated my imac with this (except I paid 44 bucks when it was on sale :))

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227251

Mac ram isn't special. The imacs use the same stuff the laptops use, otherwise nothing special.

Not a mac expert by all means, however I think Mac's use the same RAM as PCs, now that they use the x86 architecture. Don't quote me on that, I could be very wrong.

Did you look on the side of your old ram? See if it has a Mhz rating. Your new one is 667mhz, if the old one is less that is another reason why your new stuff is faster.

The old RAM does not have the MHZ on it. Which is weird.

Nah, just 1GB. Mine runs rock solid though, even OCed to 3.5GHz. I dare say I like Vista (64) :D This is memory I'm running http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231145

Macs are designed to take advantage of RAM very well. AnandTech did a report on OS X caching a few years back. Granted that was while they were still using the IBM PowerPC architecture but I doubt that much has changed for memory management with the move to x86.

Re: 4GB of RAM is awesome....

Not to knock anyone, but why put more than 4 Gb in a PC running Windows XP or Vista 32-bit as the primary OS?

32-bit versions of Windows can only effectively use up to 3120Mb (roughly 3 gigs) due to software limitations (claimed to allow compatibility on older machines), and can be forced into using a full 4Gb via registry changes. Otherwise, the 4th gig is essentially only used by hardware such as shared video memory tasks.

Much love to 64-bit OS's for opening that up, but even then Vista was proven to actually SLOW DOWN with more than 16 GB of RAM (inefficient memory use) until Service Pack 1 came out and ended that problem.

As far as I know, PCs and Macs have always used the same kinds of RAM.

I'm only rocking 1GB and I don't think I'll outgrow it for a while yet. Though it would be nice to at least double it.

My AMD dual 64 bit came with 4 GB RAM and to upgrade ti to 8 GB is $600... So much for cheap RAM. I hope by summer it comes down a lot.

On 64 bit, it seems like it uses twice the RAM of x86...

yup ... and it's been easily user-replaceable since the days of the G3, if not earlier. Hard drives are the same too (and easily replaceable on the MacBook). :D

sporting 1.5GB in my PowerBook G4. I can't wait until I get a new job and with it a new computer.

sweet! I have 2GB in my macbook. This thing is like 4 years old, even before the core 2 duo days, but still trucks for what I need it for. Maybe next year I will get a new macbook, but if this thing is still haulin' good.... I don't think there will be a need.

:tpd:

I just got a new macbook (NOT the unibody, the polycarbonite) and it came with 2gigs of RAM and 120gb HD.

I upgraded it to 4gigs of RAM and a 320gb HD.

Cost to have apple to do the upgrade - $400

Cost for me to do the upgrade - $120 :ze

PS - if anyone wants the old RAM shoot me a PM.

Huh? From where? No way it can cost that much unless they are charging like $550.00 to install it. Curious now.

That's insane! How long ago was it and who did you get it from? If it is not too late, I would return it. For that much you can get 48GB of RAM lol.

My MacBook says it has 1 GB but supports up to 4.
Will I see that much of a difference that makes it worthwhile?
Is it hard to do?

Here is what I have. Any help is appreciated.

Yes, you will see a huge difference. Specifically in booting OSX and multi tasking. It's easy as cake to do Carlos. Here is a tutorial I looked at just to make sure I did not **** anything up.

I'd say 2GB is probably enough Carlos, if you just use it for day to day tasks and searching the net. 4GB maybe, but two would probably be fine. It is fairly easy to do, but knowing your track record with Macs..... lol

DO NOT buy from apple though.

crucial ram is the best deal I have found.... anyone else can chime in if a current one beats crucial's price.

Actually my main complaint about my macbook is that it uses integrated video instead of a dedicated GPU. I don't play many games so it's not usually an issue, but it still bugs me from time to time.

Edit: I would also like to see the fps for the dell.

FPS will be heavily dependant on what kind of video card is in the Dell. An amazing machine with a low end GPU will still suck for games.

I can build a computer for under $1800 that will do anything a $3000 Dell will do just as well. I've never met a game yet that my computer can't handle at full settings, and I can re-code video, browse the web, download torrents, and still play two copies of World of Warcraft without stuttering. Quad core, 4 gigs of RAM, and SLI based video are enough to do just about everything you can ask.

Always get someone who knows WTF to build you a computer if you can, it's far more cost efficient.

Just benched, for you ;)

1920x1200 0xAA Enthusiast settings: 25.08FPS

Not bad, for a rig under $1K.

The Dell is there just to represent PC; it by no means represents my "liking" for Dell.

Of course a custom rig will always be cheaper than a pre-assembled computer. Then again, people who buy a mac or a dell aren't necessarily going to want to do that.

Of course, the mac will also be dependent on what GPU the user was willing to shell out for. On the downside, once you've got it you can't really upgrade it without buying a new one.

I did a simple test based on my activity monitor that I read about and it seems that over two thirds of the circle is yellow and red and I notice it is tough to run some applications with others.
So....I am ready to upgrade.

I checked out various places like Crucial, NewEgg, etc.
Seems around $59 gets me 4 GB.
Question I have is does it make a difference what brand the memory is?
