Damn... I only saw the (4) clear, I would of at least had a glass.

That is horrible to hear... I hope it makes it the year as well.

Re: nice rums?

I just got through talking to Dave from this rum review website. I was put in touch through the owner of an obscure liquor store that noticed me checking the back of his rum shelves, something I always do, looking for Guat Zaya. Dave does the same thing. He said he believes similar rums are Botran Solera 1893, Diplimatico "green bottle", and Zacapa, which the last I already knew. I will keep my eyes out for those others now.

That's the beauty of it...not really considering how good it is. You can find it online for around $50-60.

IF that's above your range, the Don Q Gold runs around $20.

Bill86 09-16-2011 01:54 PM

Re: nice rums?

I wasnt a fan of the Don Q I bought that same bottle for $56 I'd say it is easily priced $20-$25 too high.

I really want to try a bottle of the Brugal 1888. New expression that is aged in sherry casks !?! Loved the Brugal Extra Viejo...

Have any of you had the BRINLEY GOLD VANILLA RUM? The local grocery store had them for $10 a bottle. So, I picked up a couple.

I am a big fan of Ron Zacapa but last night I got turned on to some El Dorado 12 year old rum. Man, what a great flavor that has! Smooth, sweet and very thick molasses flavor.

about 15 bucks cheaper, as I recall.

Tredegar 11-03-2011 09:49 AM

Re: nice rums?

Yep. About 15-20 bucks cheaper than Ron Zacapa. They also have a 15 and 21 year old rum. The guy said he tried both but he swore by the 12 year old.

Just picked up some Bacardi Oakheart.

I was concerned, because it was Bacardi, that it would be a mixed drink type rum.

It is good for sipping!

I think it tastes great. I had two glasses last night!

Re: nice rums?

I hear Oakheart is really good, I passed on it the one time it was offered to me. Sailor Jerry is currently my favorite spiced, which isn't really a nice rum at all, but it tastes good with Coke Zero.

I'm partial to Zacapa atm, going to buy a bottle this Wed.

I just bought a bottle of Flor de Cana 4 yo this weekend. Nothing impressive.

I'll look around for Zacapa this weekend.

Zacapa is probably my favorite. Just picked up a bottle of Zaya today to go along with it.

Re: nice rums?

Zacapa 23 is fantastic, but my every day go to is still Pyrat. I can usually find it for around $20-24.

Have they changed Cap'n Morgan?
I just had a glass at a bar cuz that's what they had and I thought it tasted better than I remembered. Less spice and smoother.

My neighbor is doing Mule duty and bringing me a little something from St. Maarten. Last year it was a bottle of Zacapa, this year it will be something I can't get here. Another good friend will be muling some back from Florida next week. Some of the rums you lucky Floridians take for granted are like hens teeth here. I made a little list, and gave him instructions to give me a call. ;)

Picture of my latest additions. All three of the El Dorado Demerara Rums - EHP, ICBU and PM. Interesting on these rums is that they are small batch, single barrel made using the recipes, techniques and stills from the 18th and 19th century. You can read more on these HERE.

I don't think I have run into a demerara el Dorado I didn't like, Ron. I will keep my eyes peeled for these here, as you can find some of the other El D's in stock locally. Are they new?

Okay. Little hard to get it all in one shot - so here is a series. And some bottles are behind other bottles so they are hard to see. This whole area is under construction - walls, floors, ceiling, cabinets, counters etc.

And the rest with the 3 bottles of Zaya Guatemalan in the last picture. Not all of these are rum of course, have to have some stuff for the non-rum drinkers (shudder) but the 3 middle shelves are.

What the Hell Man!

You need to pick up a few more bottles of Rum or whatever, I believe I spotted at least four or five spaces that will hold a bottle!

Re: nice rums?

I don't regularly drink rum (more of a whisky drinker). But had a Zacapa offered to me at the Dutch Big Smoke, and wow that was something else.
I believe it was an XO, not sure though.

OK, stop showing pictures of your local liquor store (which is apparently specialized in rum) and show your private stash :O

Sweet Baby Jesus, Ron. I knew from our chats that you had a (ahem) "extensive" collection, but I am in awe.
How many cases of Cruzan rum cream do you have currently? ;)
BTW, I dig that the ZayaGuat has its own shelf. :D

BTW, does Alex (Snkbyt) or his rum guzzling dog Soffie know about that stash? For you sake I hope not!

well I have tried my taste at rum and got a bottle of Barbancourt Rhum 8 year Reserve Speciale.
and have been drinking it on ice not bad had to warm up to it a little but I do like it.
was not expensive but I did not want to put a lot into it if it was not my thing.
since it was my first sipping rum. there is a few other rums in the 30.00 range I will try next :D
maybe that plantation rum with the straw on it? any suggestions ? thanks a lot

smokin5 11-18-2011 10:32 PM

Re: nice rums?

Seek out the Barbancourt 15 year old, aged in oak casks.
FAR superior to the 8 year old.
And don't you dare sully it with an ice cube -
this stuff is meant to be sipped neat.:)

I agree on the Barbancourt 15. Also try the El Dorado 15 year. Most of the Pyrat rums. Ron Zacapa 23 or XO. Also Ron Matusalem 15 or 18 year.

Drink it like you like it - no good if you don't enjoy it!

I was fortunate to try 4 new to me rums today. Ron Centenario Fundacion (I am in love), Diplomatico RE, (yeah, me likey, especially the "Drambuie-ish" finish). Centenario Conmemorativo, (Still very good, but not as good as the other 3), and Ron
Pampero Aniversario. (Great spice and interestingly dry finish.)

No sir. A good friend of mine went to Mouseworld with his wife, twins, and inlaws and that is what he brought back. I pushed him down the rum slope by introducing him to Zaya last year.

Well. Slight correction, he gave me the remainder of the bottle of Centenario Fundacion as a Christmas present. ;)
