Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?
I'm a sucker for the Submariner, great pictures, better watches
|
Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?
Unless I missed it I have not seen any mention of any Sturhling watches...thoughts? My wife got me one for Christmas and I absolutely love it!

Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?
Is it automatic? Looks anodized rather than PVD coated. I think we can PVD coat in different colors, but the finish looks flatter.

^Yes, I love it and his service / shipping is steller. The best part is that the strap can be sized to each idividuals wrist.

How many custom straps have you tried? |

He seems to have other staps that are stiched better, but those are pics. This is the only 100% custom strap I own, but I do own other expensive straps in skins. Do you have a site for your straps? |
Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?
Word to the wise...do NOT buy an expensive watch without papers unless you are 100% certain of the source...I have a friend who bought a Sinn U1 rep and you cannot tell the difference...apparently they are coming from China and some dude is putting swiss Eta-2824's in them and selling them as reps...but if you didn't know it was a rep you would not be able to tell. I had an authentic U1 that I bought used for $1750 and it looked identical to this rep...ir crystal, bead blasting, smooth edges, bezel tightness, EXACT! Very scary.

In my opinion it does not look anodized, anodization produces a finish almost as flat as PVD. This looks like it is paint and clearcoat. I could be wrong. |

I've heard about employees taking a few parts at a time and assemble a watch over a year or so (at several companies). It would be "authentic" in sense until you send it to get repaired at the factory, lol... |
Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?
Went to Torneau in the Forum Shops in Las Vegas and literally walked around with my mouth open the entire time. Got to see pretty much every nice watch you could think of. I wish they would have let me put some on to get a few pictures but I can understand why they wouldn't want some 23 year old kid holding a $250,000 platinum Rolex.

I visited Torneau in Chicago, I was stunned with their selection. I can't imagine what was offered in the vegas torneau!!! |
Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?
Jealous of both of your, the Torneau in Dallas is only so-so
Although I found my RW there |

The selection was absurd. They had anything and everything you could think of. Seemed like the average price of a watch in there was 40gs. |

Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?
I just got a new watch in, and I have a sizing question. Right now it's a bit too loose, but if I remove one of the links it's way too tight and uncomfortable, so I'm stuck in the middle. Is there anything that can be done about this aside from having someone make a custom link (too much $)?
Does anything exist, maybe a thin round pad of some sort, that could be applied to say the back of the watch to help with the fitment? |

Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?
You're right, didn't notice that. That would give me a few MM's tighter which might help.
Edit: That helped a little bit, but could still use it slightly tighter. |

Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?
pics would help, sometimes there are micro adjustments in the clasp (but I think you found those already)...
on the watches I have the 4, 5 or 6 micro adjustments = 1 link span, so its easy to get an exact fit. |
Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?

Wear it loose, you'll get use to it. Many people think a watch is too loose initially and then are fine with the fit. The only other solution is to buy a strap and swap the bracelet... |
Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?
What can you all tell me about Longines? Why are they so cheap? Are they a quality watch?
|
Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?

but yes Longines is a quality watch (which you can spend plenty on if you'd like) it just lacks name recognition watchtalkforums.info/forums is a good place to read up on some of these I'm a big fan of the hydroconquest and the admiral lines |

Longines is the same level as TAG, Omega, Breitling, Baume Mercier... 800k+ a year manufacturer. When I say at the same level, I mean you are getting a similar watch at what ever price point you want pay. A 2K Longines will be on part with a 2K Omega in terms of finishing and complications. Longines name I think has suffered some with lower end products on the market. They should drop them like Omega did. I really dig Longines Charles Lindbergh line. Very classic and understated. A watch you won't get sick of too fast. |

I like it. It's classic looking without "I want to look like a Rolex" queues. Dark blue and stainless is good combo. No bubble window for date of trident star hour hand. |

Re: Wristwatch collectors out there?
All divers watches share the same styling ques..they kinda have to. The Longines Hydroconquest looks nothing like a Rolex Submariner...I personally owned one (as well as 3 submariners) and it was an awesome watch. It has much heft to it and it very solid...fit and finish wise it cannot be beat for the price.

Dan, i want to give you my opinion with the warmest of regard as you are an amazing person/BOTL. Its a very classic look dan. With that being said it is also a look that many manufacturers copy and exploit. I have two points to make. My opinion (and keep in mind i am just stating how i feel, not telling you how to live your life) is this; the first highend watch you buy (just my opinion) should be something classic that will last a lifetime without going out of style. Think of the possibilities. You can wear it with anything and then pass it down to your son and so on. The watch you posted has a very classic look to it and if this is your first high end watch it is a winning choice. Point number 2. After I had my first high end watch or in some cases my "holy grail" I am exploring more "less mainstream" timepieces (in regards to design) because I have a foundation that is special to me and will last a lifetime. So i guess my main point is this. If that watch is your first high-end timepiece. GO FOR IT! If you already have a classic style highend timepiece spend some time on a good watch forum and see what else is out there before committing to spending another big chunk. Regardless, its a great looking watch and its very aesthetically pleasing as well (probably why its a very common design). I hope you enjoy whatever watch you decide to buy! |

Longines has some watches that are cast the brand in a negative light. There are a lot of Nazi era emblem Longines army watches They are also infamous for their 1972 Munich Olympic watch which actually quite nice looking, but questionable poor taste to wear. |
