Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
I cracked the new ECBP (A124) last night. Y'all know I chase the high proofs, but for my palate, this is as good or better than the C923 everyone was chasing and falling over themselves for. Better balance, deeper flavors.

Total Wine auction option. Looking forward to the Birthday. The Barrel Select is a local option. Have to see how it tastes. |

Congrats on the OFBB, Dave! Had some of last years at the Shack thanks to hotreds Hugh, it was stellar.
Hope you see that A124 soon, Bob, worth MSRP for me. Got some good news last night and celebrated with my oldest Booker's (or bourbon, for that matter). Thank you Theo! :D https://i.imgur.com/fYrrzNs.jpg https://i.imgur.com/EKnEKRk.png |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Did a little bourbon hunting today. My local store has the WR BP ($150), and Jack 10 ($99). Passed on both. Right now I’m only really hunting ECBP A124 and Bookers 24-01. I have enough to drink right now to go after some of the other HTF’s.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Thanks Dave!
Bob, I passed on the WRBP at $119 here. The price on the JD10 ain't bad, but like Ben says, "meh". I cracked a Stagg Jr Batch 15 last night just because I haven't had a Stagg open for a while. https://i.imgur.com/JKZHALR.jpg |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Just grabbed a Ben Holladay BiB. Same store had some surprising things out on the shelves. Blantons, Bookers (2023), A Midwinters Nights Dram, JD10/12. Of course, insane prices.

Did hit up my local store to give a fiver to one of the managers. Grabbed the first bottle of Buffaloe Trace SP and a 1792 FP. |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
I've had some really good 1792 FP picks, Bob, hope yours is stellar.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
I had some KC 9-Year Single Barrel Reserve last night, followed by some ER 10.
|
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Tried 1792 Sweet Wheat while out for dinner with QT. Then had a second pour of the same. Very different from a lot of the wheated bourbons I've tried, I'll be on the lookout for a bottle.'

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Stopped by my local store to see what they had new. BT store pick for $30, don’t mind if I do. ECBP A124 for $75, yes please. Also grabbed a New Riff single barrel. Will be cracking that one open in a bit.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
I opened the new Booker's (24-01 Springfield batch) last night. I give the Booker's at least 3 weeks open before I really evaluate them, but my first impressions of this aren't great. While it has a great nose, the palate is kind of ordinary (nothing special), and there is something off-putting to me on the finish. I can't put my finger on the offending flavor. I'll try it again in June and see how it grabs me then.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
My sister in-law and her husband were in St. Augustine today and stumbled upon St. Augustine Distilling Co., which I'd never heard of. They took a tour and did some samples. The bourbons are apparently pretty tasty, especially their barrel-proof, "The Saint". They offered to grab me a bottle, but it was $200 and there's no way I'm shelling that out without tasting it first myself.

Nice, Gabe. I can't remember the last time I've seen any Stagg or Taylor around here...it's probably been years.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
I poured some of the Still Austin Cask Strength tonight. It smells great; one of the more complex aromas I've encountered in a while. I get cherry, butter, and raisin in one whiff, then cinnamon and vanilla the next. The taste is more fruit, caramel, and some spiciness from the rye, along with something that's almost creamy that I can't quite pinpoint. At around $60-ish a bottle, I'll definitely grab more of these.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Damn you James! I’ve seen the Still Austin, but wasn’t sure since Texas juice gets a bad rap. Between your review and a couple others I’ve seen online, I might need to pick it up.
Was grocery shopping at a big chain store in my area. Went into the liquor section to see sparse shelves. The lady who stocks that area was in going thru stock. Said hello like I always do when I see her. She says, “Looking for Blantons?”. Really wasn’t, but since I nearly killed a bottle last night. And at msrp, sure. And the stopper is a letter (S) that I didn’t have. |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
One of our local chains has a single barrel Still Austin CS, James. I tried a pour a couple months ago and ended up buying a bottle on the spot.
Bob, you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you get Blanton's. :D Opened a bottle of one of my favorite Elijah Craig BP batches, B620. https://i.imgur.com/ewNjTJJ.jpg |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Bought this 14 Year Rare Perfection a couple weeks ago. Opened it last night.... kind of different for a non finished bourbon. Sweet on the palate, but a short dry finish. I haven't decided if I like it or not yet. :lr

My FIL picked up a bottle of that Traveller whiskey when he was here and wanted to leave it with me, it's not terrible so long as you know you're getting sweet boring Canadian whisky (although it allegedly has Barton blended into it). I'd take a half decent 'Berta Rye over anything else coming out of that country :sl |

It's distilled in Bardstown KY, same one that bottles Olde St. Nick. But yeah, it compares to a lower proof light whiskey |

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Had a little fun yesterday. Did a blind tasting of last years Bookers releases. Idk if my palate is completely screwed, but they all tasted the same to me. The musty peanut funk was pretty much all I could taste. Keep saying I’m going to lay off the cigars for a bit, but here I am smoking one in the garage.

I would rate the 23-01 (Charlie's) as maybe the best batch since 2020, and I would rate 23-02 (Apprentice) as the absolute worst Booker's batch ever. So is it your palate, or is it mine? ;) :lr |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Managed to grab a couple of EHT bottles yesterday: A bottle of Single Barrel and Small Batch. There is a local Discord server that is dedicated to the local bourbon drops. Once word gets on there, it is a mad rush for those members to get to whichever store is mentioned to buy up all of the allocation drops. They are making bourbon hunting not so much fun anymore.

Apprentice batch I’m not a fan of as it’s heavy on the ethanol bite. Working my way through my one and last bottle of that. 23-03 I believe is the Mighty Small Batch and that one I love. 23-04 I’ve not tried but I may pick it up next month. Maybe. It’s marked up of course and I’ve over spent this month. Not a priority at this point. I’m also not hearing from Icehog and others great things so hard to justify over say an Elijah Craig bottle that is better priced and seems well talked about. The A124 that is. |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Might Fine batch is pretty solid, Dave.
I agree with you on Apprentice, one and done. I'll revisit 24-01 (Springfield) in another week or so, I always like to give them 3 weeks open. Initially, I was not impressed. Not Apprentice bad, but not great. Charlie's batch is probably my favorite since Granny's (20-01). |
