I just got a bottle of Pig Nose scotch which I think is a double malt scotch...it is very very good! I am smoking a Opus X Lancero which has about a year on it and it compliments it perfectly....the Opus is kicking my ass!!! I am buzzing tough! :dr I should have had more to eat than a hand full of cheese doodles!

What is a double malt scotch? A blend of two single malts?

That seems to be the case, though technically it is just a blend. The term double malt is not really recognized as term is the whisky world.

Single malt = malt whisky from one distillery
Pure Malt/Vatted Malt/Blended Malt = malt whisky from more than one distillery
Blended = grain and malt whisky from more than one distillery
Single grain = grain whisky from one distillery

Well, Blended/Vatted/Pure Malt would be correct for a double malt.

I've heard that term used for a few malts which can be misleading. A double malt should be better than a single malt right?

I've also seen blended malts from 2 distilleries that don't try to mislead the consumer with that moniker.

Laphroiag 10yr or Bowmore Mariner 15yr for Islay
Glenmorangie Madeira or Glen Ord 12yr for Highland
Glenlivet 21yr or Glenfarclas 17yr for Speyside
Longrow 14yr for Islands

But honestly there's so many brilliant whiskies, each with their own individual characters, that it's impossible to pick one as my favourite or go-to dram. Just like cigars, it depends on the day and mood.... that's probably why I have 50+ bottles of scotch in my cabinet :tu

I love the Glenlivet Archive 21. Great stuff. I am contemplating opening my Macallan 18 this weekend to be smoked with a PAM 40th or Opus X.

Never been big on Macallan. I've tried all of their standard line and it's always left me with a "hoh-hum, that was ok" impression. It's not a bad whisky by any stretch of the imagination, but I find it to be basically the whisky equivalent of OpusX or Cohiba: significantly over-hyped/over-marketed (and as a result over-priced) to the point where it can't meet the expectations it's set for itself.

Lagavulin 16 - been drinking it for about 10 years and trying something else makes me like the Lagvulin even more, lots of smoke!

Ardbeg is fantastic and I do believe the 10 yr old won whisky of the year in 07
or 08.
Truthfully, I agree that there are better Scotch Whiskys than Macallan, but it is a great bottle and I enjoy. Balvenie is one I enjoy as well. the 17 yr sherry cask a bit more than the 21 yr Port Wood.

It isn't single malt, but the white label is my regular pour when I want something on the rocks. The 12 year is pretty darn good as well.

haven't tried the Glen or Johnie Blue, but I love the Mac 18 and Dalwhinnie 15 :tu

I have a bottle of Macallan 18 from their Fine Oak series. I like the Sherry 18 better but it was pretty smooth. Just seemed to lack much in the way of character.

I highly recommend the Glenfarclas if you can find it. Very crisp and smooth with a heathery sweetness. In that respect a lot like the Dalwhinnie but with a bit more body.

And the Blue is something unique for a blend at least to me. Such a nice almost refreshing quality to it.

Now I've got a craving for one ofthe other and nothing is on hand! :) I'll have to make do with a Dalmore Cigar Malt which isn't quite as satisfying as the name would suggest. ;)
