Re: The Bourbon Thread!!

Decided to revisit the Larceny BP A124 as the bottle was still on my counter. Here’s my notes.

Nose - bright, sweet spice, light vanilla, like I read in another review hints of a Snickers bar.

Palate - immediate hit of the spice up front, tingles the tongue, marshmallow, light oak, drying.

Finish - seemed short on the first couple of sips, then builds and lingers as you sip more. Drinks it’s proof, but doesn’t have a big bite.

For the second pour, I really enjoyed it. On a scale of 1-10, I’d give it a solid 6.6. Not great, but worth picking up if you’re a fan of Larceny BP.

Too funny, Bob. Went to Binny's before work yesterday and they had one A124 on the counter at retail. Said someone had returned it. I passed, I may have given it a shot if I had read your follow up. So you actually saved me $74, so thank you. :D :r

Picked up another OFSBBP from Cute Rate Liquors. Cut Rate is mostly a secondary store in Dallas where I got a lot of Bookers at MSRP in the past. It is a museum for allocated bourbons (GTS 23 for $1100), but every once in a while they don't know what they actually have, like this OFSBBP, and mark it for MSRP. It is 127.4 proof. I'll open it up tonight, and if I like it, I'll head back for another bottle. They had cases of it sitting around.

Been trying to stay away from stores, but my main shop got their JD barrel proof rye in yesterday and those things can be magical so I ran down there, while I was there I grabbed a BT pick and a handle of Weller Special Reserve for my father in law. I think by now I've gotten him at least a dozen handles and another dozen 750's or liters. I've tried giving him Weller Antique and other bottles I prefer but he comes back to just wanting WSR. And JD products, he'll take anything Jack, got him a JD10 for Christmas and he lost his mind. Needless to say the rye will get cracked as soon as they land tonight :dr

I've not tried JD's SB Rye as yet, but am adding it to the list.

They did a special release of single barrels back in 2020 and it was at the time the best rye I had ever tasted, a year later I did a tour/tasting at Jack and we tried the regular rye, I asked if it was the same stuff as the LE and he said "Hell no. Well technically yes it's the same mashbill, but that release was something special." After a couple years of people begging for it to come back they finally started releasing a shelfer and doing a small amount of barrel picks for it, I tried the last of my LE bottle against a different store's pick last week and the 2020 still topped but both were damn good, I've heard some new single barrels are on par with the original

Those JD SBBP Rye are amazing. I have two on my shelf, both 130+ proof. I was just at a store today I rarely shop at, that had cases of it. 133 proof for $75, a bit over SRP here in MI.

Same store actually had some nice bottles, but stupid prices. Midwinters Night Dram $200, MM BEP $100. I did find an ECBP A123 which I didn’t have. $75, so it came home with me.

Dave, congrats! :wo

I've been seeing Holliday bourbon around here for a few months, and specifically heard good things about the Soft Red Wheat Bottled in Bond, but not enough to entice me to buy.

Well, the local Binny's just got the "Rickhouse Proof" version at 120.1 proof. That was enough to entice me.

It's a decent wheater, if it cost what the BiB cost I'd say it was a great buy. At $30 more, not as much.

The distillery is just north of me in Weston. A small little town with some nice character and history. We took the distillery tour in December and had a good time. The rickhouse proof of both the regular and the wheat are good, but as you mentioned Tom a little high on price point. Surprising given that this is McCormick.

I've only tried one or two Holladay bottles and liked them, there's going to be a cool release coming out soon called the "18 barrel blend" that a friend had a part in creating, he's been saying we all need to load up since it's something special but we'll see, I think it's going to be around $100 which is around the point I like to try before I buy

Reporting back on the JD Rye, it sure was tasty, I need to try again soon when I have time to actually pay attention but I got a nice dried fruit note to go with the expected spice. I also tried a sample of JD12, I was a big fan of that one too despite not really liking the 10

This is great to hear. I do love Rye Whiskies and put this as my pick one. I don’t quite understand Total Wines lottery system but I’m surmising your odds of winning increase if your number one pick is not in the collective pools top pick.

All of the picks were unknown to myself so went with a Rye hah.

Reading thru the Reddit bourbon sub earlier. Someone did a review of an unopened bottle of early 2000’s Bookers, that they bought at a garage sale for $20. Rated it really highly.

I bought a "drinker" bottle of Booker's Toogie's Invitation (16-03) at a discount because it had a torn label. I'll take it at less than half of secondary, it's one of my favorites.

https://i.imgur.com/QEy3C8W.jpg

Followed that up with a pour of Center Cut (15-03).

Lots of great batches over the years, Dave. Unfortunately most of my favorites are 2019 or earlier. Fortunately, I've got some backups for the best ones.

Nice score Tom.

I stopped by my local store to see what knew they had in. Nothing worth spending the money on but I did pick up the old Forrester 1910. Cracked that open and had a pour already. Oh my God might be my new favorite. Tastes like a candy bar.

I definitely want to try more Old Forester lines. It’s encouraging to hear high marks from you on the 1910. I’m really intrigued by the 1910, the 1920, and the single barrel Rye.

OF is hit or miss for me. I generally enjoy the BIB and anything >100 proof. The lower proof offerings just aren't in my flavor wheelhouse for whatever reason.

I stopped buying the barrel proof single barrel picks because they were all over the map, James. Now I look for stores that have a bar or samples to try a OFSBBS pick before I buy.

Looked on base to see if there was anything interesting, but there wasn't much. They did have a full stock of OGD 114 for the first time in over a year, so I grabbed two bottles. At $28, I can't pass it up.

Anyone have any thoughts on Stranahan? I always see it in the stores but haven't grabbed any as yet.
