:r lord, what am I not..

I'd say my most pressing concern is my 9mm on hand is considerably lower than the rest that I have. Besides that, .223 (always), maybe 7.62x39 if its cheap enough, I'm keeping an eye out for some mid quality .22 ammo at cut rate prices (Got a bunch of the golden bullets, but those are SH!T).

I'd also pick up anything CHEAP I found in .30 06 / .308 win / 7.62x51 - one of those calibers is on the horizon for hunting, and I figured if I get the wrong caliber, I can always trade it/sell it for the one I need later.

mmm, nice, thanks :tu
Just cheap target practice ammo for the 9mm. Pistol shooting is a skill that takes a lot of practice to perform even adequately!

As others have said, cost of ammo, availability of ammo and primary one for me, recoil. I was not sure how a .40 would be in the thinner M&P.
I had it in my hands and meant to get a .40 that day but was a last second decision to go with the nine at suggestion of my son and salesman.
From all I have spoken to, majority note minimal recoil difference.
Other than ammo, can't go wrong with either.

I recommend you check regularly with Shoot Straight. They are a big S&W dealer and seem to have them more often. That is where I got mine. They are all over Florida. Not sure if in any other states. Also, they sell them at non jacked up prices, at suggested retail of $449.

A proud moment in any Dad's life, when his son gets his first real gun. My 10yr old Max, got an Old Henry Golden Boy .22 for Christmas. Just waiting for it to warm up before we go out and shoot it and I get to teach him firearm safety. Very proud.

AWESOME! :tu

Some of the most cherished memories I carry of my father are of my guns and my tools, because he gave me my first ones, and taught me how to use them correctly.

Question for you guys here.. Been shooting a long time. I have read so much about 115gr vs 124gr for 9mm.

I am trying to understand the difference and see what may be best.. for target and carry. I have been real close to ordering 100's of rounds online, to save. I have thought about the 1000 rounds or a few 100 rounds of different brands/grains.

Any suggestions? I have a Ruger LC9.

Sweet! My boy gets his first .22 on the 31st for his birthday.

Re: First Firearm Thread.

The difference is penetration v. Velocity.

The lower the grain, the greater the velocity but less penetration.
The higher the grain, the more penetration but less velocity.
124 was created to find a happy medium and get a bit of both worlds, rather than more of one and not enough of the other.

As such, I try to buy the more popular 124.

CigarSquid 12-28-2012 07:27 AM

Re: First Firearm Thread.

I was reading that.. So far, I think I will buy 100 or so of 115gr and 124gr and see which the guns likes and what I like..

For the range I say buy what's cheapest. For carry I recommend heavy for caliber which for 9mm is 147gr or 147gr+p

For range, agree.
for protection, I would say depends on where you live.
In Florida, penetration not an issue as seldom folks wearing layers.
In the colder areas, would consider penetration a must in the winter.
While I prefer 124 and that is the most I have, I own quite a few rounds of 115 and 147 also.

It really comes down to personal preference for the most part. A lighter round will give higher velocity and slightly lower static energy (knock down power) and vice versa for a heavier round. When I had my 9mm I used 124's for target and for defense but only because at the time the Speer Gold Dot did not come in 147gr for reloading. My thought process on this really was I didnt need the high velocities of lighter bullets, because if I ever got into a self defense situation they would most likely be less than 10 ft from and I wanted to knock them down with the first shot. The heavier and faster opening JHP like gold dot, golden sabre, and black talons will deliver this in the most effective manner. Hydra Shok's arent bad either.

There is a slight recoil difference but if you are accustomed to your weapon it will be minimal and should not affect target acquisition very much. The heavier round will have slightly higher recoil.

CigarSquid 12-28-2012 07:35 AM

Re: First Firearm Thread.

I doubt I would notice the recoil.

I guess I may buy a 50 round pack of the 3 then, 115, 124 and 147 and try them this weekend.

My dad mentioned a few months ago that he would love to have one as well. Shortly thereafter I stumbled on one for a great price. He looked like a 10 year old boy Christmas morning when he opened it up...beat the heck out of giving him gift cards to Lowes :D

Awesome choice but will take patience and diligence to get. The hunt may even wear you down and cause you to give up.
Start here.
http://www.shoot-straight.com/
Call them daily if you have to.
They don't have them today and suddenly, one passes by the store and there they are waiting to be bought, then as fast as they came, they are gone.
This place is a large reputable outfit.

Francis I've never trusted the drums to work right, generally speaking. Admittedly that's based on ones I saw some years back, in practice and competition. (No one flame me please, if you have drums that run right in your gun, more power to ya.:))

Perhaps the ones of today have had the bugs worked out, I dunno. Good way to find out would be ask folks who shoot Three Gun matches.

I finally finished up my 1943 Mosin Nagant. It was a project I have been wanting to do for a while. I got all the cosmoline out and off of it. Then sanded the finish off the stock (left the engraved markings), stained and put 7 coats of Tru oil on it.
Took it to the range and put about 25 rounds through it. Its a fun and pretty accurate gun to shoot. Yet it kicks like a 2ton mule when bench resting it.

I use a strap-on Past recoil pad when shooting my Mausers. Dulls the mule kick to a hammer blow. ;)

They make em a lot better these days... but there are still some issues with em... and I too have a bit of lingering distrust.

I'm pretty sure the 3gun guys use 48 round mags :tu

Re: First Firearm Thread.

I'm with you Francis. You can buy too many 30rd mags for the price of a drum. Elander makes a 40rd mag that looks promising. www.themakogroup.com has them. I ordered 6 of their steel 30rd mags a few days ago. :D

spectrrr 12-29-2012 08:51 PM

Re: First Firearm Thread.

Good price on those steel 30 rounders...
but pmags have always worked for me, so I'll probably just stick with em.
I ordered "a few" of the DSG arms pmags, I think I'm all set :r

I did pick up one of the nordic expansion mags to turn a pmag into a 48 round mag. At $26/ea + the pmag, I couldn't really justify more than one of em... maybe I'll regret that if I start 3-gunning next year, but for now, one's enough.

BEST use I could think of for a drum would be a very fun shooting run with a bump fire stock. But I guess if you can afford to dump 90 rounds downrange at that speed, you can also afford the drum :tg

---------------

Cheaper than dirt has come mags back in stock. No price inflation, none at all. ONLY $99.97 for a used 30 rnd USGI mag.

the only problem right now with PMAGS is actually physically getting them :r

Right now I have a 10-pk of the DSG D&H GI mags with magpul followers on order, who know when I'll get them.

I ordered 6 of the steel from mako and I should have those within a week. Pmags are awesome but I think those GI mags DSG sells with the magpul follower are awesome too

spectrrr 12-29-2012 09:43 PM

Re: First Firearm Thread.

magpul stopped most production on colored pmags and is just making black now to keep up with the demand. I'm pretty certain I'll get my DSG pmags within a month. Brownells is selling black pmag 10-packs now as well (more expensive than DSG tho). And more tellingly, DSG ended their holiday sale on Dec. 24, but brought it BACK for another run from Dec. 26-31.... Major Vendors like DSG and Brownells would not be doing that unless they had some rough indication from the manufacturers that the orders would be fillable in a semi-reasonable period of time.

emopunker2004 12-29-2012 09:48 PM

Re: First Firearm Thread.

They stopped ALL color production until they get caught up on black. It's faster to make them black they said over on arfcom.

You do realize that there are many people over on arfcom who have backordered several hundred PMAGS each! DSG said right now they're looking at a 2-3 month wait for a PMAG order to be filled if you ordered the day they said that. That was said on like Thursday I think.

Good thing I ordered mine on the 21st :tu

Shame on the colors, I'd really prefer FDE... but beggars can't be choosers :)

I'm actually more hampered by time than anyone else, since I'll be out of the country from mid March through the end of the year. Shipping will still work fine... I'll just get it when I get back. But if it's an actual firearm... that obviously won't work :/
