Re: Whats in your bowl?

Considering it has been over a year since anyone posted in this thread...

And that it has been YEARS since I smoked a pipe (5 to be exact!) I thought I would post...

Smoking the only remnant I have left from my days when I was into the hobby, a single tin of Samuel Gawith 1792 flake from Jan. 2010.

People either love or hate this tobacco, and I can firmly say I’m somewhere in between. It seems to have lost all of its tonquin flavor, and tastes more of just the hearty dark flake tobacco it is made of. My palate and “skill” for tasting nuances is gone, but the nostalgia of smoking a pipe that I missed so much is making me soldier on.

I might pick up some drug store tobacco for the few times I have left to enjoy my new Dr. Grabow “Big Pipe” before my wife catches on, but for now I will sit in the cold and listen to the wind whistle through the trees and be grateful for the times I’ve had with all of lads and lassies of the leaf.

Purchased a pickaxe with a bamboo extension (making it church warden-ish), but I could not identify the maker. It was unsmoked at Riegels in Ft. Wayne. It smokes wonderfully.

Loaded tonight with Stokkebye Luxury Bulls Eye Flake. Yummy!!!

so, 12 hr shifts with long droughts of nothing to do, so would head out and have either the GLP Fillmore or GH Dark Flake Scented.

Smoking some G&H Brown flake and enjoying it.
Also had some Ennerdale and Bright CR flakes that I thought were pretty good. Surely have improved with some cellar time.

Presbyterian Mixture.
My first foray into oriental/latakia land. I don't know why I've waited so long this is good stuff. It won't replace my virginias & vapers but now I'll have to try some more of these english blends. And of course expand the "cellar" a bit.

Enjoyed a bowl of Dunhill Ready Rubbed. My first foray into the pipe world. My pack was terrible and I had to relight more than I would have liked, but overall a successful first smoke. Would love to hear some recommendations for a newbie pipe smoker.

Does PH mean Peter Heinrichs?
Love his curlies (reg and special). Special is the closest to three nuns i've had.

May have to investigate that curly block.

Practice. Let the tobacco you are about to smoke dry out for around 30 minutes before you load the bowl.

Also, relighting is no big deal. If you have to, you have to.

Diving back into pipes, as i sent all of my pipes and tobacco to my childhood best friend a few years back (he is very into his pipes but having 5 daughters and being the sole income for the family made piping a luxury that he had to give up) I’m starting over, tonight i picked up a couple corn cobs and a Rossi, loaded up the Rossi with Cornell & Diehl, Inc. #063 BayouNight and wad off to the races, at least i still have the touch for loading a pipe!

Yaa someone is still kicking here.

Last night Virginia No 1 in a MM Country Gentleman.

Also just pulled the trigger on a Dunhill birth year pipe, 1967. They have really come down in price over the last few years!!

Grats on the birth year pipe Adam!

I’ve been on an aromatic kick- Hobbits Weed rotating between my two aromatic pipes and one cob I’ll smoke anything in - including deer tongue and the rare lakeland.

Thanks, actually there are 2, one i made an offer on and after a bit of back and forth got for a decent price and one i bid on that i might just win, again last time i looked was a few years ago when all Dunhill in decent shape were well over $1000 each now they are down to a few hundred, so if i win this other one i won't exactly be sad about it.

Lots of bowls lately

Presbyterian - love it
Rattray’s Marlin Flake - first try it wad very good!
Quite a bit of Early Morning Pipe
SPC Plum Pudding - Regular and the special reserve
GLP Union Station - was so so, not quite as sweet as i like my Virginias but will let it sit jarred and try it again in a few days.

AdamJoshua 06-04-2022 04:16 PM

Re: Whats in your bowl?

Def more into the Virginias and English blends, there are some great Virginias out there if you want something on the "sweet" side definitely better than the aromatics i've tried.

Freaking 8oz of stonehaven and some of those others going for $400 … the secondary market is crazy.

Had some Mac Baren navy flake
Emp
Presbyterian
Mac Baren Number 1

Was a good day.

Also got lucky on eBay on some Comoy estate pipes and a Randy Wiley free hand pipe.

Here are a couple of my recent purchases, pride and joys and surprisingly cheap, guess the pipe business is slow on eBay right now

1974 Dunhill Red Bark .. even has the original inserts and ads in the box

https://i.imgur.com/pOsVZwu.jpg

and 1967 Dunhill Tanshell (my birth year pipe) not a great pic of it

https://i.imgur.com/wsbfUkm.jpg

and it's still a way cheaper hobby than cigars :lr

Literally just ordered some of that. Trying out a bunch of the Virginias, Capstan Blue and MConnell Red. I like the sweeter Virginias, mac Baren Virginia No 1 I’d a staple.
