I was kind of bummed to see it, but I could tell that when I moved the focus ring, it felt like sand for some reason.
In my brain's little eye, anyway. It focuses fine throughout it's range though, and it is already claimed by a guy at work, so it all turned out well enough. On my other rant, about FILM cameras, I forgot about a little something I have in a drawer. I need to see what kind of shots spew forth from this old Argus C3 I picked up last year from my mother's 'everything must go' push prior to her recent move. Not expecting much, but nostalgia and that it will expose film, hopefully only when I intend for it to. |

I might have already asked this question, but as far as quality goes, how do the Sigma lenses stack up compared to brand name like Canon or Nikon?

Re: Photography Thread
I never understood why they called it a 'Land Camera".
Justin, that Sigma Mini-Wide has held it's value well, for a Sigma lens. You can get em used for $60-100. They are wildly popular, it and the Super-Wide 24mm. The E-series lens is a pretty good E-lens, one of the best 3 out of the whole line of about 8-9 lenses. Maybe top 2. I don't think the tele zoom is going to work out that well, but it will do in a pinch. And the one I bought andshot with was used and had some issues inside. Their plastic parts have a certain life before they loosen, warp, snap or otherwise go out of crisp focus. Still worth having in the way you got it. |

Are you into shooting older film cameras? I have all the major 35mm Nikon/Nikkor/Olympus/Canon/Minolta Some old Rolleiflex Some old rangefinders A mint Olympus XA set They all work, just add film. I have quite a few of them and a lot of OEM glass. I have a few that need rehab too. |
Re: Photography Thread
I'm open to whatever honestly. I have a minolta srt 202 that I need worked on, the mirror sticks up until I advance the film. I have a Canon EOS Elan 7n also.

Re: Photography Thread
My God this thread is almost as slow as the board itself. Wake up and shoot, damn you!
(I know its cold...) OK, I picked up a D7000 as a low-light spare, and a relief for my old D700. I wanted to get a second D700, but the dang price just will not come down, and if anything, it goes UP and over the Holidays, DOWN $100, and now back UP $100+. SO F that. When they drop below $850 I might pick up a spare for posterity. But back to the D7000, I did NOT want another cropped-frame camera in the bag, but with the low-light performance of this model, and what I have seen to be darn good Image Quality, I went with a D7000 and was pretty pleased with the results. In a way it is going to replace my D700, because it is OLD and tired and I want to make it last as long as I can. SO I will take the D7000 out alone many nights and as a spare on nights when I want that extra pop of sensor size. I killed most of the images on my flash drive to make room for some other stuff, so I only have one shot for now, but a guy can do a LOT worse than sexy lil Mallory. This girl is the ultimate BEE. She flies from man-flower to man flower, I never see her with the same guy. And if I looked as good as she does, I doubt I would be any different. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3749/1...a25706fa_c.jpg Mallory and Mark by Brad-(OLS), on Flickr |
Re: Photography Thread
I've been thinking about starting a website for awhile now, over the holidays found a decent price on domain registry and website hosting. I'm definitely no web developer, not even close. But they have a good (to me) website builder and it made it pretty easy. Been slowly working on it for a month or so, it's pretty basic and nothing to write home about, but I'm hoping to expand it over time and not break the bank. :D

That's a nice effort! I wish I could make that kind of decision and figure out a way to drive traffic in a way that
befits a lazy man like me. |
Re: Photography Thread
Thanks Brad. I'm pretty lazy myself. It took me a month to put that together and it's obviously nothing fancy. I was really just looking for a nicer place to display my stuff, not trying to sell anything yet, might down the road. Looking to buy a photo printer in a few months. Mainly to print stuff for myself, but if someone wanted to buy something, I'd have a way to print it off.
In other words, I really have no idea what I'm doing. :D |

If you like to mess around with post-processing filters, onOne is giving away Perfect Effects 8 through Jan. 28. You can d/l standalone app as well as plugins for Lightroom, Aperture, PS, etc.
Usually sells for $99. Had a quick look and I still prefer the Nik system but you can't beat free. http://www.ononesoftware.com/landing/pe8offer/ P.S. this is fully licensed premium version, not demo. |

If anyone likes to shoot photos in the dark, here is a FANTASTIC camera from Sony that was before it's time and
still holds up well all these years later. This thing has a laser matrix focusing system that allows you to focus in total darkness without the subject seeing the focusing system in operation, and shoots nightshot in still mode. Its a terrific camera and a damn good price....surprised to see it there for $50. http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20616324.html |

Re: Photography Thread
Another of my "in and out, cheap DSLRs, BUT" posts.
Spotted this today... http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20618880.html Its a Nikon D3100, which normally I would never recommend to anyone. The body has no built-in focus motor, so you can only use it with AF-S lenses (unless you want to hand-focus). It MOUNTS em all. The issue that has this $250-$300 used camera on sale for $50 is that it "will not read SD cards - Card will not lock in slot." Hogwash. We have all used modern SD card-using cameras, where you push the card down, and there is a locking, spring- loaded system that keeps the card in the camera, and ejects it when you need to take out the card. But sometimes the mechanism sproings and the card will not lock in. It will not READ the card, because the card cannot be pushed down far enough, because the spring does not have a locking position anymore, its just like a little trampoline, and it keeps the contacts achingly close to the camera contacts, but won't touch. HOWEVER, if you roll up a piece of duct tape sticky side out and sit it on top of the SD card, you can close the door, and the pressure of the door down on the card keeps it in contact with the contacts in the camera. And the ingenious Nikon SD card doors feature a double-action mechanism that first presses DOWN on the card, then slides in grooves into a closed AND locked position, so the duct tape does not force the door open and ruin the quick fix I use. The light springiness of the tube of duct tape gives you cushion that protects the card from being crushed by the door. More or less tape may be required to make everything Happy. BUT MAKE NO MISTAKE, this camera is probably perfectly fine. Trouble is, an X condition camera (for parts only) is not sold with a battery and charger, I guess they take those and sell them used separately. SO you would need to buy this and THIS to have it work as a total package. So for 88 bucks, you have a entry level Nikon DSLR that shoots 1080 p video and a 14 megapixel sensor and a large LCD screen. I was going to buy it, but I have a rule about bodies....NEVER buy a Nikon body that does not have a focus motor built in... because I only have two lenses that work with these cameras, and they are not available very cheaply, even used. I like a Nikon body I can use with any 1986 and above lens. I was even going to buy it to SELL, but it is not a good idea to try and SELL a work-around camera to someone who is not as practical as I am. But for a person who buys it for themselves or a loved one, it seems perfectly nice, since you do not need to make a profit to make it worth your while. And believe me, my fix is GONNA WORK. But IF my theory, which has worked already with TWO D50s that had this issue, (both work fine today) then you can ALWAYS SEND IT BACK FOR A FULL REFUND WITHIN 30 DAYS, NO QUESTIONS ASKED. Cause Adorama is the $HI+. $88....Not bad for a 2010 DSLR. Entry level or not. Well, of course you would need a lens to mount. AF-S works best. |
