I am not known as a commonsewer or anything, and I don't know $hi+ about letting it breathe,
but I was pleased (and bummed) that something someone said in this thread was true.
Rob Bacardi Select is good. I am not sure what else they said, but I tasted a swig off the bottle
of that, and another identical swig offn a bottle of Anejo 7 HC and the HC tasted like thinner
and the RCS tasted pretty damn good. It is true what they say, don't pine away for HCR just
cause it's hard to get. And whatever you do don't have it shipped from London. Then it
really takes a slap in the face and turns it into a punch in the n__s.

Ron Zacapa 23 year
Zaya 12 year
Don Q Grand Anejo

Some of the best.

Hmmm - I have three bottles of Plantation Rum:

Old Reserve Barbados 1995
Old Reserve Trinidad 1991
Old Reserve Jamaica 8 years old

The Trinidad and Jamaica bottles have wax caps on them.
Looking to get the Grenada, Guyana, Panama and Nicaragua bottles also.
Will have to see if I can find the Grande Reserve.

Ron Zacapa 23 and XO are my favorites, followed closely by Zafra 21 and Zaya.

Roaring Dan rum made by Great Lakes Distillery in Milwaukee is excellent! That's the only rum I buy anymore and it's great that it's made locally in Milwaukee. I took some to a herf this past summer and it was the first bottle emptied!

I picked up a bottle of Diplomatico 12 Reserva, and wow...very very good. I actually think I enjoy it over Zacapa 23. Better value, too. :tu

While in DC this past weekend, I popped into Shellie's for an impromtu visit and had a Zacapa XO. Awesome! I haven't been able to find it nearby though.

Yeah I agree that Zacapa XO is fantastic. I tryed it at tasting about a year ago. I cant find Zacapa period around here and its driving me nuts . I love the stuff. Im working on a bottle of Pyrat right now which is pretty good.

You may want to try comparing and contrasting the agricole vs. molasses rums and see what you like of each.
Good luck in the journey. The absolutely great thing about rums, other than the individual appeal to your palate, is that compared to scotches and whisk(e)ys, you can get some huge bang for your buck, and experience some of the finest spirits of the type for a fraction of the costs. I am no expert, but I know what makes my mouth happy.. .(that sounded...er... dirty...) Oh, and my wallet.

HAHA I hear ya. Thanks for the tips. Sipping the Appleton Reserve now and smoking a cigar. I have to say so far so good. I'm enjoying the rum.

Ok guys, I being a Rum noob need your help. I never was a liquor drinker because I thought it tasted like ass.

Sooo the Rum I bought is good, I like the sweet Rums. Can you all list for me the good sweet Rums? Not the oak tastes I hear everyone speak of.

Hope this requests makes sense.

Do we all have the tendency to collect/use everything we enjoy? I am already picking up a cabinet to add to the room where the humidor is with lighting for my Rums :r

Shawn,

It's just another of the many, many slopes, open to those of us, who venture out and seek the things we enjoy and love!

BTW Shawn, Ron Zacapa are high quality rums that tend to be on the sweet side, but not overly so.

+1 on the Zacapa. Best "regularly" available sipping rum I've had. Zaya has been creeping back towards what it used to be, as well.

I knew it would take time, but still not what it used to be, and likely won't ever be, sadly. HUGE disappointment with the dropoff when the operations were first moved. I'm not lamenting the loss of the "old" Zaya any more, though, I've just switched to Zacapa. :D

Altra 05-16-2011 11:34 AM

Re: nice rums?

You guys and the OLD ZAYA, must have been some good stuff.

I am starting to think this is just as slippery a slope as cigars and firearms. Jesus.

Heading this weekend to add more to my list. My problem though is I refuse to do more than 1 bottle at a time fearing if I open my bottle of Zaya I won't want to finish my bottle of Appleton Reserve.

Sigh :dr

Well went on the hunt for Ron Zacapa 23, diplomatico Exclusiva and Ron Centenario XX Anos Fundacion.

Couldn't find any of them at 8 stores. I did swing by and pick up another Zaya and Pyrat xo :D

Ron Zacapa 23 is ordered and will arrive tomorrow, just got the call :banger

Tom I can't even find someone who can order the damn Ron C yet. Leave it up to you to suggest something out of my reach so far:sl

True, even the good stuff isn't priced crazy.

Well I tried the Zaya and big difference over the Appleton reserve. Appleton is now a mixer until it's gone.

Drinking Appleton and apple juice right now as I fire up the charcoal grill for burgers.

Hey Guys,

This is a newly released rum from one of my favorite brands. Has anyone tried this yet? I'm thinking I need to give it a try but so far I have not been able to pull the trigger. Since I live in Henderson, Nevada I have been buying a lot of my stuff from K&L in California. Hell, I can get 3 - 750ml bottles of whatever, shipped Fed Ex for $10.25.

After reading through this thread, I went ahead and picked up a bottle of Diplomaticos Reserva and everything I read in here was spot on!!!

Very tasty treat, no doubt!

Will have to get the Ron Centenario XX next. :tu

I have also come to enjoy Ron Anejo Botran Solera 1893 and Oronoco. I would have to say my favorites so far are Havana Club 7yr, Zacapa XO, Zaya and the Diplomaticos Reserva but I still have a lot of rums to try.

Zacapa 23 FTW!

Day to day I actually love a Kraken (with a cube) with cigars. Bloody excellent stuff. Quite reasonable too.
