Speaking of Heaven Hill, went to a cool tasting on Friday. HH's wheated mashbill at different ages from new make to 8 year followed by the latest Larceny BP and a few special surprises at the end. Hell of a night :al https://i.postimg.cc/h40SnqjC/PXL-20...-020548181.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/ZnjZx62k/IMG-20230623-210527.jpg |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Glad to hear it’s a good batch, Ben. I stopped at a store that’s maybe half a mile from my house. Had never been there before. He wasn’t price gouging, got the HH and EC at msrp.
Sounds like a nice night too. I need to find out about more things like that around me. |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Cracked open the Bardstown. Some tasty bourbon. :tu

Very cool, Clay! :tu
Bob, let us know what you think of C922. I bought a few private barrels but I don't think I've bought a new ECBP batch since C920 or so. I've got 2 backups of each of my 3 favorites, so a batch would have to draw some raves for me to buy now. Ben, that HH tasting sounds great! Please tell me about the HH20. I've heard that it is the best Booker's batch ever and isn't Booker's. :D I have been hitting the Barrell Batch 28 hard since I have a backup now (thanks Mike). Just delicious. https://i.imgur.com/WGB47iS.jpg |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Dammit! Told myself I was done buying for now. Stopped by the one nice store in my area, as I believe they get their deliveries on Wednesday. What did my eye spy? I’m guessing I just overlooked this until getting that blind sample from Ben.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Interesting with the Moscatel finish, I have not been excited for the regular Woodinville.
Making it through dance nationals this week with a Wilderness Trail black label single barrel. |

With apologies to Curtis Mayfield, "Pinkie's dead .... that's what I said".

Always grab two bottles... I managed to grab two bottles of Bookers 2023-02 Apprentice Batch last night on my way home. Haven't gotten to where I can open a bottle yet. -(P |

Glad you like the WV, Bob. :tu

I didn't like the Apprentice batch as much as Tea, Pinkie's or Charlie's. I'll make a real review after it's been open 3 weeks or so, but I will likely only grab one backup of this one Tony |

A couple recent pickups.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
I just finished off a bottle of the Wilderness Trail single barrel last week while on "vacation" last week. I have had some very good ones to some there were not bad just on the different or funky side. It is one that I will usually try to pickup if a local store has a single barrel pick.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Curious to hear your thoughts on the Maker's. Bob. I was there when they released it at my local but I have lots of other stave finished MMs so I passed.
I had some 1792 FP sib to celebrate 1776. ;) https://i.imgur.com/d6kFy3Z.jpg |

Did some hunting today. Hit up a few stores in Ann Arbor. Snagged a bottle of Old Grand Dad 114 at total wine, otherwise it was a bust. The few other stores I stopped at weren’t much better. If the had anything decent, it was overpriced. EC store pick for $90, the small Eagle Rare for $50. I’ll pass. One had a MM stave finished, but they didn’t list the recipe. It was all question marks. Again, $90. Yea, I’m good. |

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
I hate this thread ! Why did I even click on it????
Every time I look at it, I feel the need to go out and buy another bottle of something. My cabinet is full of tasty selections, as I don't drink a lot and my friends don't drink Whiskey (yet). Luckily, I am over in Greece right now and the US made stuff, while available in very limited quantities, is super expensive. When I get back, I'll be compelled to search for a bottle of that Makers Mark Private Selection. Cheers !!!! |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
I'm glad the MM is a winner, Bob. I actually ordered the Maker's Mark Generations of Proof Private Selection, it has 375ml bottles of the '19, '20 and '21 Private Selection batches. Hoping they're good too.
I had MM on the mind for sure, grabbed the new LE to go with my cigar last night. https://i.imgur.com/jaQDnGr.jpg |

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
So Tom, what’s your thoughts about the last two Bookers releases? I have a feeling that’s what I’m likely to find anytime soon. I can’t remember which one wasn’t well received.
|
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Bob, for my palate, Charlie's (23-01) is very good, quintessential Booker's. The Apprentice (23-02) has not been open 3 weeks yet, but early on it's my least favorite batch since Donohoe (21-01), and not something I'm looking to have more than 1 of.
Had a pour last night of something I'm glad I have a backup of (Thanks Mike). Love the Barrell Batch 28. https://i.imgur.com/dkdcSBU.jpg |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Thanks Tom. I’ll continue to look for it.

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Snagged a bottle of 4 Roses SBS to add to the collection. Checked a few stores to see if they had anything new. Nothing much of interest. Did find out the MM BEP hasn’t been released yet in Michigan. Has to do with our distribution process.
There’s one store near me that’s got a great selection, but crazy prices. No wonder the shelves are still full. |

Opened the 4R yesterday. Damn that’s good stuff. Didn’t even give it time to breathe. This bottle should only get better.
Went over my friends house. Tried the Woodford Double Oak and Russell’s 6 year Rye he has. Well, there’s two more bottles to add to my list. |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
I have never tried the WT Rare Breed, often tempted when I see it. Soon....
Cracked one of my older Booker's (Center Cut) last night. Delicious. https://i.imgur.com/DIrUSA2.jpg |

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
So decided to go hunting in Toledo, Ohio. There’s a website you can look to see what’s in stock at some of the stores. Found one that “showed” it had Booker’s. Tried calling a few times but their line was being worked on. Long story short, they didn’t have any. But I did get some BT bourbon cream, JTS Brown for mixing, Michter SB, Penelope 4 grain barrel strength, Smoke Wagon Small Batch, and a Benchmark SB. Yea, way more than I needed.
|
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
|
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Yea, I had a feeling I was coming home with something. The Penelope and Smoke Wagon we can’t get her in Michigan. Figured that would be a nice consolation.
Correction on the one bottle, it’s a Michters Small Batch. |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
They're both on the shelves all the time near me, Bob. If one really grabs you and you need more down the line, let me know.
|
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Ooo this is a fun game. Bob let me know if you want me to ship in anything from CO too, let's put a little grease on that slope

Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Ok, this Penelope is really good. The nose makes you think it’s going to be sweet; caramel, maple syrup. You get those flavors initially on the palate, but then it turns spicy. Very much cinnamon, the barrel char. Settles with a nice warmth in the back of the throat.
Oh, this is batch 13. (My lucky number) |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Glad you like the Penelope, Bob. :tu
Had me a little 125 proof 1792 last night. I may or may not have had a couple other high proof pours and didn't take pictures so you wouldn't think I'm a lush. :al :r https://i.imgur.com/bIheWYB.jpg |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Ok, what do you all do if you get a bottle you end up not liking? Trying the MM store pick, the one with the different stave finishes. It’s not my cup of tea. I think they used too many of the French Meridiant (5 of the ten). The nose is really good, like maple syrup. But it doesn’t carry over to the taste.

Reckon you could pour this bottle down the sink. Or, save it for serving to guests you're not overly crazy about. Or, use it for experimenting with cocktail recipes? You aren't one of those folks who think that mixed drinks are beneath consuming, right? |

I’m not above mixing it into cocktails. Love me a good old fashioned. And the bbq sauce idea sounds good too.
It’s odd. I really like the MM French oaked bottle I have. |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Oh yea, Ben, the one store I went to in Toledo had six of the Woodenville Moscatel on the shelf.

I've only actually drain poured a couple of bottles. I've given open bottles away, or a couple still sit there looking for a guest to point them out.
Lots of choices this weekend....I even liked a finished one! :lr https://i.imgur.com/6z4FStH.jpg https://i.imgur.com/AZyO3jP.jpg and killed off one of Mike's bottles...... https://i.imgur.com/AurMvPf.jpg |
Re: The Bourbon Thread!!
Was out running errands so I stopped by a few stores to see if there’s anything new worth picking up. Was also looking for RD One Amburana finished bourbon. Saw a review about it that looks like it’d be up my alley. Seems other people saw the same video, as the shelves were empty.
The one bigger store by me had a few of the Orphan Barrel bottles. $300. Umm, yea, no. |
