Re: Photography Thread
Alright all you photography guys out there I need some help with a camera...
I am buying a new camera this week or next for personal reasons not for a job or anything like that otherwise I wouldn't be asking for help! I am looking for something mid level, something that I will not grow out of in a year or two like your standard point and shoots, something that will take good pictures, wifi connected or something that has the option for a wifi adapter, I would think high mega pixels would be key but not sure and honestly it doesn't have to shoot video Although I guess that would be a bonus. Looking to spend around $500 but that is negotiable can be less or more if needed. Any help would greatly be appreciated...I will try and check this page every day but if it's something I really shouldn't miss out on please PM me! Thanks, Taki |
Re: Photography Thread
Are you looking for DSLR or what? I recently got a Canon G1x and it's great. It's got a sensor almost as big as a crop dslr. They can be had used for $500 and less.

Re: Photography Thread
Started my Christmas shopping early.
I had some cash put away for a trip that happened without me, and the money was burning a hole in my pocket :D My wife is out every day taking pictures.I think this Cannon is just what she needs? The hard part is to keep it stashed away until Christmas. http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/tech/report/2013/01/ |
Re: Photography Thread
To both of you looking for cameras, I have to chime in with what everyone else knew I would, I have 5 DSLRs for sale.
|
Re: Photography Thread
What are some good lenses for cigar photography? If I am lucky something I can also use other generic shooting.
|
Re: Photography Thread
Look for something that can clearly focus to a point as close to the subject as possible. For a good close-up, you need a lens that lets you focus clearly as close to the subject as possible. Personally I like a lens that can get down to under a foot away from the subject for this purpose. A smaller focal length lens, say 50mm or less that is designed to be a macro lens should work.
|
Re: Photography Thread
Also, taking great shots takes patience and quite a bit of practice. When I'm out shooting my eyes are everywhere; I'm looking at everyone and everything and judging whether or not, based on experience, if this scene or that one would make a worthwhile photo.

Re: Photography Thread
I used a circular polarizing filter in the above shot, IMO with some amazing results.

Love the results we get with both Don |
Re: Photography Thread
Been looking around, Thinking the canon 50mm f/2.8 macro would be a good place to start for me, maybe get the extension tube along with that since the lense is pretty cheap.

Re: Photography Thread
I'll say one thing about it Ron, I rotate those cameras and take a lot of pictures with those ole hunks of junk. :D
I tried to stay true to the idea that I can do anything with any one of em if I play by the rules. Low light is the only time I ever feel a little trapped by the body I take somewhere, but I also have the lenses now to get me out of trouble. My brain and my impatience are the only things that hold me back. |

PASS!!! For $3,000 I can pick up a nice D700 and still have enough left over for a couple of very nice lenses. |

IMO not too much editing needed. I use Photoshop Elements, which is kinda like a "Photoshop Light" without all of the bells and whistles of Photoshop CS. Maybe a little tweaking with contrast and levels to bring the colors out a little more. IMHO, the light post is a bit distracting, as is the stop sign. Just my opinion, of course. :) |

Desoto Fireflite. Yeah, even a stodgy company like Desoto made some pretty nice looking cars in the '50's:

Re: Photography Thread
I love that car! When I was a kid of around 10 or 11, a good friend of my parents, who had worked in the NY garment business and been a hand model in her youth, had one under a cover in her garage. The story was that every year she got herself a new, pink caddie. She was an 80 year old sport model for sure!

EVERYTHING NEW that Nikon has ever produced. THIS......this might be another kettle o fish. I went to the link and looked over it in DEPTH to see if it was something I wanted, check that, I WANT IT. Something I should spend money on.....another matter. But it specs out to me as the perfect camera for me. Before I buy ANOTHER used D700, I will get this one. I really like the 'low' Megapixel count on the full size sensor. But in black and silver, HELLS NO. ;) |
Re: Photography Thread
Why have 2 of the same camera? You mentioned buying another d700.

but it was too pricey. I bought a D70 and a D100. I traded for a D100 with some cigars from my end. I saw a number of D200s with defects I did not consider to be deal-breakers, and bought every one cheaper than I feel was a fair price. Before you know it, I had jumped on so many markdowns that I have a full closet of old Nikons....why? Wanna buy one? Cause I will make you a hell of a deal. Like I told Shark earlier, NOT A SINGLE ONE of my cameras is incapable of taking a great photo. But you can ask Shark, having a capable camera on hand is not always quite enough to deter the demons of our own minds. You want newer, better, more low-light capability, the ability to use legacy lenses. One by one factors come in to play that force you to look at something higher up the food chain. But if you just wanted to take photos for pleasure, and not for sale as prints, any camera will do you right. The deal with multiples, on my end, was that all of my cameras can utilize the same batteries. Why not pick up a cheap D200 when you see it? I bought a D90 that had a flash that would not stay locked and seated. Gaffer's tape.....saved $150, gave it to my sister. |
Re: Photography Thread
I could have had more awesome dinosaur remains pics here, but at the time I thought that the flash on my D90 was malfunctioning, so I went home. I get to looking the camera over later that day, and realized that the flash thingy was being obstructed from opening all of the way because of the BASEBALL CAP that I was wearing at the time! :r:r:r The flash unit was hitting the visor of my cap so of course it wouldn't fire if it wasn't opening all of the way.... :gary
