Year-end ball tourney was today. It was cold. 5C when I got to the diamond and there was frost on the outfield and the bases. But there's nothing quite like an untouched ball diamond to get your blood pumping. |
Re: Photography Thread
This shot was three trips in the making...Woke up early on Saturday THINKING I had a route to the river across from Memphis....
I was wrong. I drive around Arkansas for an hour trying to find a way past the sloughs and willow groves and all kinds of dirt roads to no avail, even with having checked Guugle space maps. Then on the way out of the state, I took a chance on a road that led me to the base of the three bridges downriver of Memphis. I was too late for even the sunrise, but I had FOUND the spot. I went back that night and shot some night shots, and it was a STRUGGLE. Thank goodness for the moon. There is nothing between where i park and where I have to shoot but 1/8 mile of loose rock revetment around the supports on the river. RISKY in the dak, hell, risky in the day. I nearly slid into the river twice as the rocks shifted and gave way, not to mention dropping two cameras. but somehow I kept it all together. But the shots did NOT impress me. So I got up earlier this morning and drive right to it and decided NOT to risk the rocks again, since i did not feel the need to get the Desoto Bridge in the shot. Here are the three bridged just downriver from Memphis from this morning, just a few hours ago. Odd hwo the FLOW is the same, but the water last night was as turbulent as usual, and this morning it was GLASS, except for a ton of fish swirls, they were feeding on top this morning. Wish I had brought a pole and some worms. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7289/9...7a85f15c_c.jpg Sunrise over the Memphis Bridges by Brad-(OLS), on Flickr |

Shot this at a friend's CD Release party....this is one of her friends that
supported her as a backing musician as she played through the album onstage for her party-goers. They really made her look great, and she said it 'was the best night of her life'. Man this was the coolest thing. I was shooting acts during the downtown Memphis Main St. Trolley Night, where
a lot of people congregate and watch acts perform in the area, ride the trolley free and see the area on foot and hang out (and drink). Well this friend of mine was playing in front of a restaurant and this little girl became enamored of him and kept giving him little tips in his case. he ended up making up a little song for her and singing it to her, and I got this shot. Good Bokeh....but, the bokeh makes his face look like that kid in The Mask. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7343/9...0a55cdd8_c.jpg I Love You Julie by Brad-(OLS), on Flickr |

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7413/1...2a80d2aa_c.jpg JEN 2, and why you ALWAYS check your settings. by Brad-(OLS), on Flickr Nikon D200, Nikkor 85mm f/2 This is why you ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS set up your camera before you shoot. If a fighter jet flies over and you pop your camera on and up to shoot a quick shot, OK, do what you have to. But when you intend to fill your memory card with 450 shots of the same thing, NEVER EVER leave your camera settings from the night before. I was shooting a musician in a downstairs, dimly lit club in downtown Memphis, and had the ISO cranked to 1600, which is EASILY twice what the D200 can handle without a lot of noise. But I had to do it or miss all the shots, which i barely escaped with anyway. 10-20% success rate under those conditions. But I got ENOUGH to save it. But then the next day, I was shooting in broad daylight, and I LEFT THE DAMN CAMERA set to 1600 ISO. I had a super-choice Nikkor 85mm f/2 cranked onto it, which is a bokeh masterpiece, and delivers the sweetest portraits you can imagine. Well, unless of course, you leave you camera crippled for the whole day. This is a great shot, but look close.....just wrecked by noise. Of course, if you look TOO CLOSE, you won't CARE about the noise. This next shot was the saving grace....I NEVER shoot anything good without a second camera. I had a D90 with a 50mm 1.8 on it, and I shot a large pile of pics of this gorgeous lil monkey with it, so while the best SHOTS are ruined by noise, the DAY was saved by the humble D90 and 50mm lens. See below. And see more of her here http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7420/1...f23cbe4a_c.jpg Jen by Brad-(OLS), on Flickr |

your D200 will mount any AI, AIS, AF, AF-D and AF-G lens in the bag, AND METER with them. When I pull out a 1970s 85mm lens and start shooting away, the D200 has no reason to hang it's head in shame, because the better images are coming from the D200 oftentimes. I just screwed up leaving my ISO about pegged. MANYS the time I have come in here and told you and others about how I failed to clear my head at the beginning of a shoot. HELL, my first 200 D90/50mm1.8 images were WHITE, because I accidentally and inexplicably bump-moved the mode dial from A-priority to M and wasn't checking in on the LCD often enough. Luckily her set was only half over, but I got some STUNNING shots of this hot lil monkey and they were ALL blown out white. I finally chimped the pics and saw what I had done and set everything up right. And I had lots of time to re-cap a lot of that stuff. Sadly though, everything looked normal on the D200 LCD and I didn't see my huge error or even think about it til I got home. I threw some Photoshop noise reduction on it, busted it with some curves, and am not angry about it anymore. But I was furious Satuday night. |

Re: Photography Thread
Here is one of the shots I was set up for that caused me to have my camera all wacked out on High ISO settings the next day.
Not the camera's fault obviously, and hopefully I have learned my lesson. But this room was darker to me than it looks here. And I threw a ton of 'curve' on this one to brighten it up, plus noise reduction, and it still sucks, outside of the fact that there is no blur from slow shutter speeds which makes me happy. And even then this shot is only ISO 1000 on a camera that in it's normal range will go to 1600. It sucks past 800, but that's another story. I still love the D200, but this is NOT the place for it. This is HIS band...if you want to see him at his other job, check out this video on the yewtubes he is soloing at about the 2:30 mark, gettin all kid guitar faced. He's a great kid with great skills. Or about the 4:00 minute mark here: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3726/1...e5a47157_c.jpg Nick Black with the Big Band by Brad-(OLS), on Flickr |

is ALMOST as bad as the D200. It starts getting REALLY squirrelly in High ISO situations, blasting out color blooms and just pouring on the saturation. It seems to freak itself out. So in normal to lower light conditions, it is fine, but you put it in a dim basement music stage sitcho, and neither camera is really up to the task, if you intend to show your photos to anyone. The D90 looks a lot better at ISO1000 than the D200, but when it gets to 1600, it is beginning to come apart. Which in a way it should, that is it's ceiling basically. But there is IQ and there is IQ. At 1250-1600, the D200 is still giving you the same photo, just noisier. That is not the case with the D90. But now that I KNOW this, I can turn the color settings to totally neutral next time I try to shoot D90 in low light. |

All you Nikon honks..... I'm still bouncing pulling the trigger on a 7D.... At this point, half wondering if I should wait for replacement. Not so much for improvement, but just the kick in the shorts at buying a second in 2 months....(assumption on time)

Re: Photography Thread
Ron, I hear you on the fact that I am only halfway to death on that D700, but I am not in a hurry to spend
another 1200 bucks on a camera, so I only use it when I absolutely need it. What I DO need to do is start CARRYING it to places where I am not familiar with the lighting just in case. In fact I was just telling someone in New Orleans on Flickr that I am a fool if I don't take it this time, owing to the fact that I always shoot from about 3am to sunrise in the French Quarter. I end up throwing away over half the shots cause they are bleary and smeary. The D700 would tighten that up significantly. I never cared about losing so many shots, I shoot many shots of the same thing by reflex and experience, but that's before I had my D700. |
